The man is a legend! Back in the late 50`-early 60s, Ray Davis used to put on Stanley Brothers concerts in the Baltimore area (He had to call them "John`s Gospel Quartet" due to contract conflicts) and recorded Ralph, Carter and George on his own "Wango" label. Ray, Don Reno, George and the Stanleys opened up a whole new world for me. Thanks for posting this!

Both these men are gone now. George Shuffler died back in April and James Alan Shelton passed away earlier this evening. R.I.P. George and James.

In old interviews Shuffler admits he got the idea from Bill Napier who was recorded Crosspicking when Shuffler was playing bass with the Stanley’s. The rift between the Stanley’s and Napier extended to Shuffler hence why later on he was adamant he invented it when both Napier and Don Reno were doing it on guitar before him.

A good instructional video from one of the early bluegrass masters. Shuffler contributed so much to the early Stanley Brothers sound, they might not have survived without him.

I've been playing the crosspicking style for a long time and I really enjoy it. But let me tell you crosspicking sounds easy, buy it really isn't! The d lick at the end of this song is tough! George might not be as polished sounding as some of the new pickers, but he has the mountain sound that I love and he was doing this when no one else was! One of the best pioneers in the business!!!

I agree I learned to cross pick by watching doc Watson however I dont play exacly like doc but that's how I learned. It took me along time to make it sound right. But itvwas worth it,,,,I use a thumb pick instead of a flat pick,,,

The pickin, playin, & music of Appalachia. Mr. Shuffler also played bass. Can you imagine a band leader telling George Shuffler "you get over there on the bass". 😂🤠🎻🎵

And sang beautiful baritone. George did everything required, bass players say he was as innovative on that as on the flat top. Bluegrass all rounder unparalleled.

@keeganbluegrass
@keeganbluegrass 4 жыл бұрын
He literally didn't come up with it. He admitted he learned it from Bill Napier who played lead guitar for the Stanley brothers while Shuffler played Bass. Napier was recorded doing crosspicking before Shuffler even played guitar for the Stanley brothers.

If you want a good video to show more advanced, relaxed right hand picking, check out videos by Frank Vignola, Joscho Stephan, Stochelo Rosenberg. Even Tony Rice does not rest his hand on the top. All of these people have vids on KZbin.

Do those paterns enough, they become muscle memory. Just takes time then it clicks one day. Just keep working from being able to do it cleanly, no matter how slow, and work from there. It will click one day.

No, actually Napier was recorded doing crosspicking before Shuffler even played guitar for the Stanley brothers. Napier did indeed come up with crosspicking on the guitar.

well George is almost the Father of the crosspicking and i' know that this technique is very hard if you try to find the perfection will be one of the five most hard difficult technique of Guitar world but many people know one amazing guy well a KING of guitar a GOD of guitar MR. Robert Fripp may be you heard the one of his master piece FRACTURE from Starless and Bible Black is amazing when i heard i think that there were a two guitars playing at the same time but there were just FRIPP
