... FINALLY! Today's video is my NewJeans Attention, Hurt, Hype Boy & Cookie MV Reaction and I'm obsesssssed with the sound of this group but also the Y2K Queen vibes they're serving up!
NewJeans is Hybe's latest girl group and their sound is incredibly nostalgic and I think their team have done an amazing job creating a modern Y2K aesthetic by recreating the trends of the 90s and early 00s with contemporary designers and pieces. I had the best time reacting to NewJeans!

NewJeans are my new fave group. As a 90s kid, I'm getting major nostalgia vibes especially from Hype Boy & Attention. I like that their management have taken into account the members age & worked it in with the styling & aesthetic of the group. Very appropriate & gives a fresh new style to a very 'adult saturated' kpop field.

I love this group and their music style a lot! So many solid vocalists and dancers~ The outfits were so fun and casual; the genuine youthfulness of the comeback reminds me of SHINee's debut (in that they are going for a natural vibe) Also the "cookie" innuendo may only be a thing if you read into it, but the idea of a bunch of adults fully knowing that this song is ambiguously suggestive and still allowing a group of minors to sing it is icky. That's on their management though, the girls did great in my opinion :) It's the only nitpick I have with this debut but I think they have such a bright future.

New Jeans are quickly becoming one of my fav. girl groups. I'm ARMY and don't really resonate with other groups, but NJ have a really refreshing image and sound! A mix between nostalgia and timelessness? I also loved that they showed racial diversity in all the Hype Boy MVs and even queer coded one of them . It's SO nice to see, especially in the kpop industry, which is heavily racially homogenous and heteronormative. You should really watch the four MV's for Hype Boy! They each tell a story but are interconnected, I loved the concept! (loved that you mentioned Skins alksjdakl I loved the first two gens) The girls are SO young and yet they're already so incredibly talented and well rounded. Danielle and Hanni even have writing credits in two of the songs! As expected of HYBE, all of their groups are such high calibre, LeSSer and New Jeans are definitely the next global girl groups. Regarding the controversy, I think people are seeing it and trying to classify it through a western (anglophone, really) lens. Cookie used to be slang for a CD in the Korean industry 20 years or so ago. Since the whole EP is about impressing about impressing a boy, the song has more of a meaning about being hungry for his love and trying to bake a cookie (their album) with a lot of love so that he falls for them. The lyrics in Korean even sound childish. The lyrics seem suggestive only through the lens of anyone that knew the western slang only, really... I never misinterpreted it as sexual because 1) it never crossed my mind to sexualise teen girls or asossiate them with sexual innuendo and, 2) I didn't know the slang was a thing so I went with the obvious meaning in asossiation with the album concept/theme and the obvious imagery. I think it's weird that people immediately jumped to the sexual route, to be honest.

It's not only western anglophone. I speak three native languages (Spanish, French and English) in all of them, cookie is a slang for vagina. I mean I would never associate directly cookie as the slang in a song because it's the structure that makes it sound like that. How the phrases were made, it gave place for people to also think about the possibility of that slang. I really do hope the real intention was that one but at the same time the creator of that song speaks English. Not only that but Min Hee Jin is very sus. Either way, there's no point to pin it on the girls and they explained it (hopefully it's the truth, because still some Koreans complained about the sexual meaning too), let's just hope and see that it's not repeated again.

@@dbfjjdbdb.2091 My native tongue is Spanish but I’ve never heard cookie being used as slang for vagina and none of my Latin, Korean or Japanese friends saw it as sexual. As it is, the whole issue has been mostly talked about in Anglophone spaces. Like you said, I hope the real intention behind the song is innocent, because everything points towards it.

@@HinataUchihaInuzuka9 Well, in my case, my friends and other people know that galleta can be used for vagina. Spanish has many ways of saying vagina for terms like food as, el biscocho, la fresa, la galleta, el chocho, la panocha, la concha. So yeah, I mean it's possible that you don't know about that one but cookie is used too as a slang in Hispanic countries. It's logical as to why English people use that as a slang, because many other cultures have it too.

@@HinataUchihaInuzuka9 But yeah, there's no more need to talk about this since we have different experiences because the Spanish language is very broad so it's normal if the people in your entourage don't know about it because they don't use it and instead they know more the other ones I listed. Let's hope that was the real intention and that Min Hee Jin pedophilia scandal is really a confusion. Time will tell. That's the thing that makes me worry most rather than the lyrics.

I actually like their inside short longer than the outer skirt. because it is more safety for them , since they are still young ( I always have this problem with young member wearing too short skirt. in a way the short longer the skirt made them more young and suit their age. like they are just a child). in Korea baking cookie means making cd. hence in the beginning there is a giant cookie and in the end a giant cd I'm not sure cookie is their title song. is it ?

I'm completely agreed with you about the lyrics of Cookie, if I haven't looked on the internet people saying that it was too much for teenager girls I would never had any complaint or any wrong idea about the song, they are making an analogy of their music by putting the example of a cookie that is sugary and it's moreish so you wanna have more cookies (you wanna listen more of NewJeans) and I understood it in that way because the video itself shows a cookie at the first part rolling behind them and in the last part of the video their CD album was rolling behind in the other direction, just like the cookie did at the first part... so I completely agree with you about that the issue is not the lyrics but people! Also, if you look at comments about Cookie's lyrics on the internet, usually the Korean people don't see the lyrics as bad as Western people because in Korean language, the way they sing it and the words they use it can even sound kinda childish (I'm not telling there's no Korean people who are dirty minded but if you ask to a Korean not-dirty minded person (normal person hahaha) he'll tell you that the lyrics were cool and even childish in a way).

It's just their whole brand right now is cute and fresh and I refuse for them to have any negativity come their way 😭 Their music is literally the biggest breath of fresh air right now, kpop was definitely in need of this beautiful, chill out R&B vibe. I sincerely hope ADOR/HYBE treats them well and are very careful with them, not just their young ages but they are building a very good momentum of success right now. They're growing organically, without that overproduced and flashy outfits and sets. It's just them, their music, and dance. I love seeing this. They will blow up one day, internationally, I can see it, they all speak English too, so HYBE knows what they've doing now, they know their power and impact into the American music industry now. I started laughing when you said you weren't mad about Danielle's outfit in cookie. You said that right after the "looking at my cookie (taste it)" part, so I thought you were reacting to that. I do agree with you that her skirt and shorts don't look good from the back. I think the outfit is fine from the front. As for the controversy, Hybe released a novel length statement if you're interested in reading that. I personally think it's plausible that even the English language speakers who worked on the song weren't as familiar with western slang, and possibly wrote it without knowing how it would be received. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt especially when it comes to culturally specific slang and innuendo.

I'm sorry but if they are really trying to be a global group and including so many English lyrics in their songs, they absolutely NEED to be responsible with it. No one should ever sing a song in a language that is not native to them without knowing the full meaning of what they're saying. You don't have to be dirty minded to take that song sexually. Yes, Koreans may not have taken it sexually but they also may not understand the English lyrics, and SO many of the problematic lines are in English. Someone in Hybe messed up and it's not the girls' fault. I still love their music but you can still like them while acknowledging that poor choices were made.

Just a correction: Kpop has always included many English lyrics. It's not a new development that started due to them wanting to be more global. They've included English lyrics since the beginning. I reckon that it's on purpose, to always have 1 or more members in really odd outfits as well a song like Cookie as the debut song - reminds me how BTS started with RM's hair and sunnies and the out there styling - they're ensuring that something about these groups are being talked about since debit, because there's nothing worse than debuting and not being talked about at all. Part of it is also like the girls swap pieces with each others outfits too maybe since I feel like Minji's shoes were meant to be with Danielle's weird outfit. It also goes with the off-kilt sound of the song. Anyway I feel like I get it lol but I also agree if I were judging the stylishness and appeal of those odd outfits is like "ew why"

@@hortbeck i agree that people might be much more comfortable if they waited till the youngest was sixteen and that girls can change a lot in these few years, but it's precisely because of that they were debuted. we will never know exactly what the execs were thinking leading up to their debut, but we do know that they probably wanted to debut them at this time with these songs and concepts because it would feel more natural to them - their young ages and appearances (though controversial) as they are right now were probably deemed to fit into the debut concept and have the potential to grow into future concepts that they probably have laid out already. their voices, faces, bodies, attitudes, mindsets etc. will be changing as they age, and the new jeans right now are what they wanted us to see and embrace. for better or for worse, this is the new jeans that we get!

I don't think the slang is the issue. I am not American (nor a native speaker) and I didn't know about the slang when listening to the song and it still shocked me that they went for that type of song when the girls are so young. Of course they are not going to come out and say "yes, we are out here sexualizing high school teen girls", that would be PR suicide. But it has happened before and it is definitely happening there. It is not a worst case scenario or anything, it is a quite tame case in fact, but it is still clearly what's happening. Of course no one thinks it is an issue because it happens all the time in K-pop, to boys too! But it should change, in the same way that other things should change (the extreme dieting, the feeding of extreme parasocial relationships of romantic nature, etc). I am not singling up K-pop at all, either. All big entertainment industries have issues, kpop is just the one we are dealing with here. I have enjoyed for many years, but I still see the bad sides of it. That said, it is again not the worst case of this by any means and I don't think it should be made into a huge deal, just maybe give more traction to literally all the other songs that have a much more age-appropriate tone so that this type of sound and vibe gets pushed a few years down the road.

@@nicoleloss7987 but when it needs to be explained in order to correct an initial reception, it means something was there to cause concern (even if the concern was in error or mistaken).
