The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Wow, I didn't know Georgia sang this number one hit on the Sullivan show! This was right at the start of rock and roll when pop singers, like Georgia, were trying hard to fit in with the changing music scene by recording rock and roll songs. As mentioned, this record did really well as it got all the way to number one in 1955 on the Billboard Pop chart, and became one of the biggest hits of the year. Georgia's follow-ups "Sweet and Gentle" and "I Want You Be My Baby" were also Top 40 records, so 1955 was a good year for her chart-wise. This is a fun song, and it was written by Johnny Otis, Hank Ballard & Etta James. The original version, simply called "The Wallflower", by Etta James, was also a number one hit on the Billboard R&B chart. I love to see '50's pop singers, as well as rock and roll, on the Sullivan show, and hope you will post many more! Thank you!

As you probably know, the original "The Wallflower" was an answer record to Hank Ballard's "Annie" series of hit songs in 1954: "Work With Me Annie" & "Annie Had a Baby". He's the 'Henry' referred to in "The Wallflower".

@@michaelmelen9062 Quite right! An early answer record, before it was more common in the early '60's. It makes sense too since Hank Ballard was one of the co-writers of "Dance with Me Henry".

This clip certainly reflects mainstream culture in the United States for its day. Acknowledging the "live" performance, I remembered that Thurl Ravenscroft did the "Henry" responses on the hit record. I also had to wonder how much Alan Freed played this version of the song.

People making disparaging comments might never had read up on various singers of the pre and early rock era. From 1951-57 Georgia was signed to the Mercury label, a label which included a strong R&B component and roster of black artists. Also, artists did not usually choose their material, producers assigned songs and arrangements for the contracted singer to record. Just discover what Rosemary Clooney had to record as a tradeoff for being allowed to record her version of "Tenderly." Plus, these "white" pop versions came almost 10 years prior to the civil rights breakthrough. Put history into context. No one stole anything. Back in the day, we used to research topics by reading books, periodicals, encyclopedias, etc. Today it's so simple... just Google it. You'll learn something amazing!

Sorry, but when you take someone's song without their permission, record it, make a profit from it, and none of the profit goes to creator of the song. Then you have stolen.

That is how i feel when i hear contemporary girl singers attempt to sing Connie's original song ' Where the Boys Are '. They ruin it on the first verse by unproper enunciation by saying = " Where the Boy - ees Are ". Yech .

You can see history in the video 'quality' -- kinescope recordings with heavy distortion. Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz aided their longevity by NOT using that recording format.

..... Well it's better than most of the whitewashing of great songs done by black musicians, BTW did you all know on Gibbs' studio recording that Thurl Ravencroft did the male lines. He's best known as the original voice of Tony The Tiger.

BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING. I'M A MUSIC HISTORIAN. MOST EVERY ROCK N ROLL RECORD CAME FROM BLACK PEOPLE WHO WROTE IT AND IT WAS STOLEN. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DOING A JOB. EVEN ELVIS ADMITTED HE STOLE HIS STYLE FROM BLACK PEOPLE. BY THE WAY HER VERSION SUCKS AND ANYTHING PAT BOONE RECORDED SUCKS. HE'S THE BIGGEST THIEF OF THEM ALL.
