Chijmes was actually a Catholic orphanage. The govt wanted to tear it down but some of the orphans all grown up got together and championed against tearing it down which resulted in chijmes today
@magdalenevillarliberg61044 жыл бұрын
Quite right. Convent of the holy infant Jesus (CHIJ) it was called in the olden days.I spent 5 yrs. of my childhood in the orphanage there in the 60's. All Catholic orphans had to attend morning mass in that chapel everyday before school. Non- Catholics (very few) only on Sundays. Can't recall how may retreats we had there in the chapel. Also attended primary and secondary school there. Irish nuns taught us mostly whilst the local nuns run the orphanage. So many memories not all rosy.

ij girl here! to add on, there was a small side gate called the gate of hope where female babies were often abandoned for the sisters of the covent to take in. in particular, baby girls born in the year of the tiger because they were thought to bring bad luck to the families

hmmm.. CHIJMES was an orphanage and a school. It was my mother's old school, and the ladies of my household are all alumnus of it(including myself!). From what I understand, it was split into two different types. The English educated and Chinese educated. My mum was in the Chinese educated side. And back then, the Chinese educated were looked down upon. Their classes were not as well equipped as the other classes and they were not allowed to mingle with other students. At times, they did not even have classrooms and have to have classes along the hallway. The plaza used to be sunken in and was a field where they did their P.E.. When the govt decided to move all schools out of the city center, the school then became into two different schools. One is CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School (Chinese Ed), and CHIJ Toa Payoh(English Ed). Here's an interesting fact! The door where the babies were left or put through is still there today.(Nearer to Raffles City mall side) Also, the museum opposite CHIJMES used to be an old school too (St Joseph's Institution) that is now situated in the West. Also, Bras Basah Complex is a place where everyone goes to get their textbooks, and stationaries for school, along with past year papers from every top school in singapore,, preparing for the big examinations. :D

Have not seen most comments but a bit of information (and refresher for younger Singaporeans) on Singapore History regarding CHIJMES and Bras Basah Complex. From what I know of CHIJMES, it served as a Catholic Covent orphanage and school for girls. It was known as the Covent of the Holy Infant Jesus and is part of the Catholic enclave in the area with the original building for St Joseph's Institution, a boys school now used as the Singapore Art Museum. The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd and the office of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Singapore are just across from CHIJMES. The CHIJ girls schools dotted around Singapore are linked to CHIJ which was the site of the original school. With regards to Beas Basah Complex, in the old days, there was a row of shop houses along Bras Basah Road between Dhoby Ghaut and SJI (now Hotel Rendezvous and Plaza by the park which were famous for their second hand bookshops where you could get books from all over the world at cheap prices, including uni texts (I think ihat the fact that the area was full of top schools like CHIJ, SJI, Raffles Institution and Raffles Girls School and near to city centre may have played a part in this). The famous MPH Bookshop was on the other side of the area at Stamford Road together with the original red brick National Library building next to the National Museum. Now the old MPH is part of SMU but the building is preserved while the old library was demolished for the road tunnel and the remaing part of its grounds holding the SMU law library. In the 1970's, as the area was redeveloped, the bookshops were moved to Bras Basah Complex. A lot of the older shops there like Modern Book shop used to be at the old shop houses..But other shops related to book industry also established themselves there with Popular Bookshop's flagship store located there. For a long time, before the appearance of Borders and Kino, the area was the go to place for books in Singapore. A bit rambling, but hope you understand the history of the area better.

Bras Basah Complex is a haven for used books shops. There used to be way more bookshops in this complex. My saviour during secondary and university days for secondhand textbooks. And also to sell my books for some quick cash~

Bras Basah Complex used to be called 书城, which literally translates to "Book City". But it has lost a lot of bookstores over the years, and printing shops and others have replaced them. I used to get my textbooks and assessment books from there. I also used to go to the second-hand bookstores to rent books. You pay an amount to rent a book, then you get some money back when you return it in good condition. They are better than the library because they have newer books and a better collection for teens.
