What George said about Japanese Americans in 1942 is true, it was really awful. Many of those who were thrown into prison camps simply because they had Japanese ancestors lost everything they had, the US government took their homes, their businesses, any money they had, and never gave any of it back when the war ended. Actor George Takei, who was in the original cast of Star Trek, has talked a lot about what his family went through because they were sent to an internment camp in 1942.
@PDVism2 жыл бұрын
And on top of it, it portrayed the inherent racism because they did that to those with Japanese heritage but nothing of the like happened to those with German or Italian heritage. Land of the free, land of the brave, .... yeah sure.

@@PDVism To be fair that would have entailed locking up about 30 Million People .... Including Gen. Eisenhower!
@PDVism2 жыл бұрын
@AP Joseph Yes and ? Does that make it any less racist? Let me think.... nope, not a single bit. Were does people that got thrown into camps without any rights at all responsible for Pearl Harbor, no they weren't. In other words you would have been fine with the USA putting into camps anyone with a Saudi background because of 9/11? Whoa, I guess you have no clue what living in a democracy should mean.
@Shinobito12 жыл бұрын
I wrote a paper about Japanese POW's and I also mentioned that part. To throw you into the camp it was enough if you had 1/8th Japanese blood in you. This means, that if only ONE of your great-grandparents were Japanese, you were viable for the camp.
@SuperBigblue192 жыл бұрын
@@PDVism Really shouldn't confuse prejudice with racism as it pertains to the time in question. While some probably had racism towards Japanese most policies toward Japanese weighed National Security concerns & found that though prejudicial, that it was a necessary evil of the times. However, the Japanese Government actually considered the Japanese as a race superior to other races in doctrine & practices even to the point of enslavement of other races.

Carlin's career as a comedian extended back to John F. Kennedy times. As the person below said, he's the OG - or, rather, the OC: the Original Comedian. (Well, the one who more or less lived to our times.) He has a TON of material. He started out doing jokes in the real old-school vein, doing characters like "Hippy Dippy Weatherman", stuff like that. Then he finally grew his hair and beard out and became a counterculture comedian. Did a couple very famous records in the 70s, and by the end of that decade, began his bi-annual HBO specials, of which this one is the last, iirc. By the end of his life, he was more a philosopher than a straight comic, as this segment illustrated. A funny philosopher. One of the great Americans.

The reason his comedy changed went back to when Carlin was arrested at a comedy club along with Lenny Bruce (another obscenity charge for Bruce). Carlin wasn't charged, and was released, and he felt guilty about being let go when Lenny was still in jail. That's when his comedy started to change...

I've always countered when people criticize "God given rights" by saying they're NATURAL rights. "Okay, you don't believe in God. But, you do believe in nature, and you believe that people, being the smartest and wisest species on the planet, have the ability to draw lines about what is and isn't acceptable within a society. Therefore... you believe our human nature entitles us to certain things. Thus: rights." He's right, though, in that there has never been a government that respects their citizens' rights. Ever, ever, ever.

Figured I'd add my own comment. a lot of people talk about how great he is and blah blah, but don't go into the one detail i'm going to bring up. george carlin wasn't just the goat comedian. George is a legend for a reason. George is the comedian who set the stage (see what i did there? Har har!) and completely revolutionized stand up comedy and set the bar so awe inspiringly high that most comedians from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's all see George as not only their teacher/professor/idol/role model, instead, his way of doing comedy made the rest feel humbled and/or see him as the god of comedy. George had the effect on other comedians that they took his way of doing it, and inspired them to try and do the same. Jerry Seinfeld, Ricky Gervais, and all the rest all have said pretty much that. but i digress.Onto my original point. you seriously think human beings have rights? We don't. There's truly no such thing as Rights. They don't exist. They're made up to be just a fucking fantasy in fantasy land! I have one simple rule for myself: Fuck your laws and fuck your rules. I don't just break your laws & rules, I shatter them into a thousand pieces and grind them into dust. I do whatever the fuck I want, wherever the fuck I want and whenever the fuck I want, within reason. But I am also reasonable, caring, empathetic and simply just don't give a shit if someone bad mouths me or not. that's their problem, I ain't got the time to give a shit. I think the same way George did. I'm basically just a younger George in my mind, essentially. We truly don't have rights. That's just a bullshit idealism, a fantasy.

GC is one of, if not the, greatest comedians ever. As for the "raise your right hand" bit, it goes back to when they would brand criminals to identify them. They would brand your right hand. So if someone raised their right hand and it was branded, jurors knew this person was a convicted criminal and could decide if they believed them.
@edgarpryor32333 жыл бұрын
Rights exist, whether the government chooses to respect those rights is a different issue, and the reason the first 2 amendments to the US Constitution are so important. The Constitution was an agreement with the newly formed government that if they would restrict themselves to the limits outlined, the people wouldn't kill them all. That worked well until the second President was elected.
@intello89533 жыл бұрын
“Rights exist” Yhh because we made them up or *if you believe in God* you belief God lays down the rights and laws. But let’s be honest from a purely atheistic naturalistic perspective “rights and responsibilities” don’t really exist. But I might be wrong

Regarding Carlin's unlimited vs none scale of rights, it's important to keep in mind that even with our supposed rights that are actually just government-given privileges, acting according to them carries the implication of knowing there will be an outcome of doing so, and accepting that outcome. So really in his 'unlimited rights' idea, you have the right to do whatever you want, but if you're doing something against the law and an officer finds out, they have the right to do their job. You have the right to resist their attempt to bring you in, but they have the right to defend themselves if you get violent. Another way of looking at it, is that if we have unlimited rights, the government is using their immense power to either oppress us by restricting our rights to fit their design if they're doing their job poorly, or assist us by restricting our rights in a way that promotes order if they're doing their job well.
