One of the best non french coverage I've seen so far ! But as a french passionate by this story, I have to say that you forgot some details veeeeery important on that case. Murielle's mother was diabetic, and we know now that she was used to prepare the insuline for her. So... the insuline near the river becomes a real clue. Moreover, she came back to her statement after a weekend with her family. She testified on friday, and... judge Lambert sent her back to her family (the gendarmes warned him, but he felt too confident and wanted to go on vacation) till monday, when she would come back for a second and official testify, in front of the judge. There are since rumors (well, not really rumors at this point) that she's been beaten all the weekend, and denied her first claims back at the gendarmerie on monday. The crow made it clear that he was in the family. He knew that one of JM's brother was not really his brother (calling him "the bastard"), and called some people that had their phone number unlisted. So they were closed for sure. Their villages are in the mountain, it's a very typical way of living. They were a huge family, with dark secrets, abuses, and other stuffs. All living in the same places, all spying and talking on each others. Jean-Marie was not showing he was richer that much. This was jealousy from family members that didn't climbed the social ladder (uncommon that kind of small villages at this time. A lot of people living here were just line workers for small industries) They were a lot of updates last year. Some family members (Jean Marie’s aunt and uncle) have been arrested but were released. No proofs, but serious hints that they were the crow. We all agree on their guilt. And French police recently admitted that Bernard Laroche was more than probably guilty, but he's not the only one. This was a family crime, clearly. But nobody wants to talk, even now. I just can't imagine living within a family knowing some members participated killing your kid. That's an awfull situation. That's why they left, and now live near Paris, far from all the family. The case is also known as being "cursed", because of all the dead people (especially judges). The 1st judge was a wreck, then he committed suicide, the second judge didn't want to do the same mistakes and didn't want to talk to journalist. One of his journalist friends tricked him with a private conversation, and published it as an interview. After that, and the loss of the case and the penalty he got, he had a heart attack, and suffered from amnesia. He died 3 years later. They were also a lot of ethics problems with the media. A picture of little Gregory found in the water (also dead) was taken and released. You can see the small body tied, in the gendarme's arms. Some journalists hid in the Villemin's and Bolle’s house to record conversations (not joking, that's 100% accurate), an other one bought a crown of flowers to take a picture of it in the Vologne, with that description : "the villagers tribute with flowers in the Vologne". Like wtf ? They wanted the best pictures, the best infos and Gregory's parents were too young and too naive. They were manipulated. One of the famous journalists of the story became friend with Jean-Marie, and knew he would kill Bernard. He stopped him a first time, but continued (maybe unaware of the consequences) to show random stuffs he found on the case (like tapes of Laroche’s testify, and it is forbidden by the french law for a journalist to get in a case like this. He conviced judge Lambert to let him alone on his office for a few hours. He accepted.) Jean-Marie become more and more enraged Just some facts, there's a loooooooot more, you would need like a entire day to give all the details of that incredible case ! Sorry for my bad english, I hope this helped !

Why was the insulin not checked for fingerprints etc. Why was the raven not found/caught in the act - tiny village, close family - wouldn't you notice someone in yr house making up to 27 calls a day, writing letters etc, wouldn't you recognise the voice/terms used by the caller. The handwriting tests seemed flawed too.

L For the insuline, the judge didn’t thank much about it a the time it was discovered (The first judge that did so many mistakes). A few years later she was asked about the insuline and said that she learnt to prepare it after Gregory’s death. Her mom’s nurse admitted on her deathbed (and gave a tape of à conversation in which Murielle admitted to the nurse she’s been beaten) that she already knew at this time. There’s not only one person, at least 2 that called and sent letters. And yep, small villages but in the mountains. The houses were sometimes far from each other (Gregory’s parents one was Actually, that’s why she let him outside playing on his own, you tend to think it is less dangerous when the nearest house is far Away). Gregory’s father tried to kill Laroche a few weeks after he actually did. He stood near his house with a rifle. Laroche never noticed he almost died this day. So making phones calls or post letters in the villages near Lepanges without being seen or recognized seemed Easy. No cameras at the time (1984) and it was common to send letters and use phone boxes 🤷🏻‍♀️ For the letters, it was spoiled by the gendarmes (using no gloves at this time) and the voice was so weird, nobody recognized it. The handwritting note was done by a specialist but the judge didn’t fill thé papers correctly so it was cancelled (I know what you think, what a moron)

L True ! They forgot a lot of things in only 5 episodes ! They didn’t mentionned the nurse, and the fact that Murielle won her trial with the French justice Last year (I think ?). Her « garde à vue » (24h audition) was considered against the constituion because she was not allowed to see a parent (she was a minor), a lawyer (not an obligation in 1984, as the right to see a parent) so.. it’s cancelled too. Her claims no longer exist. Netflix should make like 5 seasons to discuss all the elements and plot twist 😂 You’re welcome ;)

@@georgiamarie_ Omg thanks ! To answer some of your questions : - About the autopsy : it lasked two hours. We don't know exactly what time he died, in what water (even though everyone is pretty much sure it was the river), the amount of blood collected is underwhelming and no viscus was removed other than the lungs. The medical examiner really did a rushed job. - Gendarmes are indeed soldiers, they are considered part of the army even though their role is similar as one of a police officer. They are more likely to work in small towns and for the most part live at the station while police officers are more likely to work in big cities and live by themselves. There are other differences in benefits, hours and salaries. - Some people don't like Christine Villemin because she posed for Paris Match and sold exclusive pictures of her new born child to that same magazine. She also wore make up and was nicely dressed for her appareances which made people think that she wasn't affected by the tragedy. Even though it's her attorney Garaud who advised and organized all of this to gain more money, it was perceived as distasteful by the judge, press and public opinion. She said she did it to be able to pay for a defense. However I do think that nowadays a lot of people have sympathized with her. In insight she was just trying to hold it together, nothing like this had happened before and she did what she was told to do. In general people believe it's definitely someone in their family or an employee but not the parents. And Le Petit Juge/Lambert recently committed suicide because he felt like the new take and public interest in the case was too much to handle.

I just watched the entire series on Netflix and as an investigator there's a few things that stand out for me. Firstly, Murielle Bolle originally said that Bernard picked her up from school then they took Gregory and they drove several kilometers away. Bernard took Gregory then returned without him, clearly accusing him of the boys murder. Within 24 hours she recanted her story and blamed it on duress by the police. I think the real reason she changed her story is because she was released back to her family and they threatened her if she didn't recant. Murielle Bolle was also quoted as saying Bernard did not pick me up from school and he's innocent of the murder charge. Well if she wasn't with him how does she know he's innocent? She wasn't on the bus and Bernard didn't pick her up so where was she? I think the entire family is complicit. The other piece of evidence is when the police recovered Gregory's body there was a clear picture of the complex knots that were used in the binding. These were not normal knots, one was a figure eigth loop. They look like an experienced sailor or soldier had tied them, cetainly not the boys mother unless she had some military training. I suspect Bernard and his family are complicit in the murder.

You’re the second comment that has brought up the fact that murielle said Bernard picked her up and took Gregory but didn’t return with him and then even though people warned the judge against letting her go home before her second statement to the court and that she actually had visible signs of physical abuse the day she recanted that she didn’t have the previous day. Like how sad that this poor little boy had his life stolen away and for what? Like I honestly don’t know what goes on in some people’s heads... the fact that the boys hat was pulled down over his face just makes it seem even more that it was someone close to him... it just fires me up thinking about it!!

To me, Bernard had the most motive. I imagine he started hating his cousin pretty early on, and this hatred turned to jealousy, initially because he had his parents whereas Bernard didn't, I think them having children ten days apart and Sebastian being disabled created more resentment within Bernard, almost as if he thought he deserved the 'perfect life' his cousin had. When he wouldn't give him a job, maybe that was the final straw for Bernard and he wanted to take Gregory to teach him a lesson, to shatter his 'perfect' life. I hope the truth does come out, and justice is served for Gregory ❤️

While I'm inclined to agree with you on that argument, I personally believe Murielle Bolle (Bernard's SIL) did it. From what I read and heard, she was a bit of an attention seeker. She probably heard Bernard and his wife griping on about the Villemen family, their good life, our bad life, I deserve this, etc, etc, no doubt heard Bernard say about revenge, and then SHE acted on it. IMO, Bernard (and others) knew and covered it up.

Exactly, Judge Lambert killed himself. There are 2 interesting facts about his death. First, he decided to kill himself while being drunk using a plastic bag and a belt in order to suffocate and that scene is exactly the same as the death of the main character of his own book. Second, he wrote a posthume letter. I tried to translate the most interesting part, one thing to consider is that he decided to suicide in 2017 just after an umpteenth rebound on the case, when 3 members of the family were accused for some of the Raven’s acts, here is my « translation » : « These « news » are awful. It lies on software’s result. The grinding machine is on to ruin the life of innocent people and to serve the spirit of revenge of a few tormented souls, for those hurt in their bodies’ honor. Some of my colleagues followed the move with an disgusting bad faith. I claim one last time that Bernard Laroche is innocent. [...] For some sentimental reasons the approach has been to invalidate all Nancy’s SRPJ’s work. And, of course, I am not talking about the efforts to demolish all of my work. This new event in the case are meant to fail. And as a result... to don’t lose face, people will look for a bouc-émissaire (i.e someone to blame). Of course we all know who’s that... I refuse to play that role. If I had sometimes failed, my conscience is in peace regarding the decisions I took. We’ll never know the truth because we don’t want to see the truth. If only the responsible of the case would accept to look at American or transalpine judiciary records... I prefer to ring the end of the game for me. I’m old and I don’t have the strength to fight anymore... I accomplished my destiny. A lot of people say Jean Ker didnt care. He wanted a story. But the netflix documentary shows something COMPLETELY different. Jean Ker was really close with the family. At first it was all for better stories, he got them a good lawyer that was a friend of his so he could get closer but he got to know the family. The reason he showed those tapes is because Bernard was being displayed by probernard journalists as a saint, and people started blaming the mom. Also she got this wrong, Jean Ker showed the tapes to both Jean Marie and Cristine, BEFORE she went to the hospital, but convinced them NOT TO DO ANYTHING STUPID. They even went to kill Bernard and Jean Ker woke up early to go stop them. Jean Ker was one of the only people still on the parents side for a lot of the time, he became a family friend. Also Jean Marie only went to kill his brother after the National Police started suspecting Cristine and ignoring Bernard.

I just finished watching this on Netflix I have a theory. I think Murielle was convinced to somehow lure Gregory and used insulin causing him to be unconscious. He was then bound and tied by laroch or murielle where he was then thrown in the water. I think murielle originally came forward when she couldn’t handle the guilt. But then towards the end of the case where she starts defending laroch I think it’s to win her sister back. Idk I just want this case solved.

@Béla Apátsági The grammar, verbs tense, the fact that there are so many "exceptions" to the rule. We have double letters, we have many sound written differently, we have silent letters in some words. I don't know if you speak french but it's my mother tongue and I know a lot of people struggle writing without making tones of spelling mistakes because it's a really tricky language :) it's also beautiful!

The suspect who spoke with the uncle mentioned he had the”Chiefs” son. Could this mean it is/was someone who had worked with him at the car plant? Vetoing his cousins application for work makes that a strong motive due to Bernards sons condition and the family struggling financially. Would he have risked making the phone calls though as his voice would have been known to the family even if he tried disguising it.

The insulin theory is interesting, and I honestly wonder if insulin is used in more murder cases than we know of. I"m a type 1 diabetic myself, and I know that any non-diabetic who is injected with it will almost instantly lose consciousness, as they already have a sustained amount of insulin in their bloodstream--adding more makes their blood sugar drop rapidly. As you say, it can't really be detected either as it's a natural hormone.

I was thinking the same. I’m a nurse and I’m always concerned with how much insulin my DM patients are getting and always double checking they aren’t getting too much or too little. Can’t imagine a person with normal pancreatic function having it ..especially any significant amount 😬

Shit when I had my son they gave me insulin later due to my blood sugar, I have no history of diabetes in my family and have never been diagnosed with diabetes even gestational diabetes. So weird and now I feel really uncomfortable. More uncomfortable than I did at the time.

There is some limited testing that can point towards insulin toxicology. Vitreous humor (fluid within the eye) has been found to display elevated levels of insulin in postmortem cases of insulin overdose/homicide. Also the disparity between C-peptide and insulin. Usually it takes a suspicion and evidence to steer forensic examiners though. I doubt it’s overly common. You’d have to have access to it, which raises suspicion (e.g., diabetic patient, medical worker) and an unexplained death. I have had a few diabetics and nurses who shared intent to OD on insulin, as well as a couple who did inject as an attempt. Interestingly, they didn’t seem to suffer any sequelae. High enough doses leave you brain damaged if you live.

So after watching this, I saw a comment about a documentary on Netflix, so of course I had to watch it. Oh my goodness, this case is crazy! I personally think Murielle was telling the truth the first time and that Bernard did it. Especially with his reaction after Gregory's murder that Jean-Marie had it coming to him. That is a terrible thing to think let alone say out loud. I actually cried when they were showing the footage of Christine at the funeral. Her grief was palpable, absolutely heartbreaking.

Wow! This was also a new case for me! I think in this case the simplest answer is the right answer, and that it was Bernard and Muriel (sp?) the whole time. I think that even though it's a little detail, but I think not realizing that there was a different bus driver on that specific is actually a huge clue.

and the ignored testimonies from students on the bus that she wasn't on the bus, but Christine MUST have gone to the post office said by other bollocks witnesses' testimonies once the judge was convinced the mother (for some reason) killed her own son, despite Jean-marie never believing this for one second, no motive and an enormous group of some of the stupidest journalists, police, lawyers and an even dumber judge Lambert, vying for the most interesting way the story could possibly play out. It was Bernard. And good for Jean-marie.

Something you forgot to mention: murielle bolle, she was only a teen and her testimony was supposed to be kept secret until the trial. Guess what happen when you release the identity of a witness on live on TV, before the trail ? Specifically when the testimony was charging her own family (family which are under investigation of murder of a 4 year old little boy) AND that she was living with them!!! Like no french is surprise why she changed her testimony. Like try to picture someone who want to rat on the mafia, live with the mafia and then his name on TV as the one who rated while he is surrounded by them....Yeah, we all come to the same conclusion

That was a great summary of a case that was completly foreign to you prior to doing reseach for this video. Some other things that points to the Laroche couple's culpability for me is that Bernard Laroche was actually raised by his grandparents alongside his cousin Jacky Villemin who was Jean Marie's half brother (the bastard son of his mother, so yeah Jacky was basically abandoned to be raised by his grandparents). So Bernard Laroche and Jacky Villemin were raised kind of like brothers (even though they always knew they were cousins), but Bernard and Jean Marie had only a distint cousins relationship. The crow often mentioned the unfair mistreatment of Jacky by his family. -> This leads me to believe Bernard was the crow (or one of them), as he was very fond of Jacky whom he was raised alongside with. Police officers also found some music cds in Bernard's house that were used by the crow during his phone calls to the Villemin family. Moreover many witnesses said they saw someone looking just like Bernard in the Lépange sur Vologne village on the day of the murder. And of course the first testimony of his sister in law Murielle is very important. She said Bernard came to pick her up after school and then he drove to Gregory's house and they took Gregory with them. After a few days in her family (so with Bernard's wife by her side), Murielle changed her testimony saying Bernard didn't pick her up after school and that she got home takin the school bus. However all of Murielle's school mates and the bus driver said she was not in the bus that day. So her second testimony is false and I think that her first testimony is probably the closest we'll get to the truth about what happened that day. Even though I think Bernard is one of the culprit, I don't think he's the only one. There were probably several crows (probably his wife and maybe more). It was a crime planned by several people after many many years of family secrets and jealousy. Now I even think that most of the family members know or have a clear idea about who are the crows and who is responsable for Gregory's murder, so at the end of the day it's quite an abject family that would rather protect murderers to protect their family instead of helping solve the murder of their grandchild / nephew / cousin. At least I'm glad knowing that Gregory's parents moved far away from this village and their family that all still live there and keep on keeping their awful secret.

I think it is a bit different. Like it is a small town, so it was most likely one bus that wasn't that big. So I think you will notice your bus driver if it is most likely one bus driver for the bus line.

@@JennyWas13 it's not the same thing as taking a random city bus...it's a school bus driver(& I don't care if you're from one of the most over-populated busiest cities... If you take a school bus to get to school every morning, then not only as a student do you know EXACTLY who your school bus driver is... That school bus driver DEFINITELY knows each of their rider's....its their jobs! It's their jobs to know each student~ which is how they know which addresses or stops to make throughout their route to school every morning... And just like your school teacher's know each of their students names, & you know your teacher's names, you also know your school bus driver just like that driver knows you). that literally took her to her school EVERY SINGLE DAY, aside from A VERY FEW one-off episodes where for whatever reason(maybe another bus driver from a different route was a no-show/or called out sick last minute/or had a break down/etc)which caused a switch-up in the regularly scheduled bus driver's routes, & resulted in that particular school bus driver to be called-in early from their particular everyday route, in order to come over and cover for the other bus driver....whose routes may start earlier than the school bus driver's routes begin~ which then allowed for the bus company to send an alternate driver to take on the school bus route that morning...which is EXACTLY what happened, and it was exactly how she was caught lying! She thought she'd have ZERO issues describing her regular school bus driver that she'd see EVERY SINGLE MORNING! Well fate had it, that due to the extenuating circumstances that morning....her REGULAR bus driver happened to not be the one working that route that day, which showed that she hadn't been on that bus that morning just like they mentioned...which also goes with what that alternate bus driver had said~ that he hadn't seen this easily recognizable girl with Flaming Red curly hair that morning on his route....and her Regular bus driver that would DEFINITELY have known if she was on HIS particular route that day, because he would've DEFINITELY taken note the fact that she was on his bus that day, because he CLEARLY would've been like, "uhh....wth are you doing on this random-A$$ bus route that I'm working this morning?!? ...youre DEFINITELY on THE WRONG BUS hun, because this bus isn't going to be dropping you off at school today."

I definitely think that Grégory was taken by someone he knew. As his mother said, he would've made a noise if he was being taken by someone he didn't know. As for the mother being very noisy about the case and them saying her behavior is weird, I don't find it all that weird. I think of it as a mother who wants to know what is going on with the investigation into who took her son and killed him. I also think it could've been someone who was working with Jean Marie considering he had a lot of enemies from his bragging behavior. Someone could've taken him as revenge. But it still doesn't explain why he didn't make a noise. It had to have been someone close to him. I hope this little boy will get the justice he deserves.

Great job! This is a well-researched and very good exposé of the case. Here are a few things I’d like to add. About experts: I agree with your “pinch of salt” about the handwriting analysis. They are all over the place. Talking about experts, Murielle was psychologically tested in 2017. She was subject to “Koch’s tree test”. By having her draw a tree, experts were able to conclude that she lived a traumatic event between the ages of 13.4 et 16.2 years old. Can the investigation go any lower than this? About law enforcement in France: Things depend on the type of mission and the location. For preventive purposes, there is a geographical separation (cities for the Police, everywhere else for the Gendarmerie). For judicial investigations, they both have national jurisdiction. This is why judge Lambert was able to remove the investigation from the Gendarmerie (“The cousin did it”) and hand it to the Police Judiciaire (PJ) in Nancy (“The mother did it”). About recent developments from the 2017 break: + July 2017: Judge Lambert commits suicide. He left a letter, writing “This new twist is a disgrace. (…) The crushing machine is back into motion to destroy or hurt the lives of innocents (…)” + May 2018: The 2017 indictment against the Jacob couple and Murielle Bolle is cancelled because of procedural violations by Judge Barbier. + February 2019 (last Tuesday): The 1984 audition of Murielle Bolle is deemed unconstitutional, not having respected her rights. Consequently, some elements will have to be removed from the casefile. Is there a curse or is the judicial system messed up?

This case is so baffling. How did the abductor take Gregory if the mum was watching him. The house is really open, no trees at front, road in full view yet noone saw the abductors car which if it had been Bernard wud have been recognised. So so strange.
