I mean, this doesn't really feel like "looking down" on someone, this is more just a general concern for her son's well-being. Going to college certainly wasn't a necessary step for Georgie to become successful. But High School? That's a different matter. Sure, it ultimately worked out, but it was probably a lot harder than it would have needed to be. Even back in the 80's, not having a high school diploma could SIGNIFICANTLY lower the chance of one getting a decent job. And again, it worked out, but having the ability to use his diploma to have more options would have been a good back-up if he didn't come up with any good ideas right away.

From what I understand, back then it was okay to drop out of high school since getting a job, earning a living, and working your way up wasn't as hard as today. It was kinda stupid though dropping out if he only had a year left of school, but at the same time its his life and he can figure it out. At least GEDs are available if he really wanted one. Can't do that in todays times because most jobs requires some sort of college degree aka a bachelors or a certificate, but you need a high school diploma or GED to get into the program for a certificate. Someone told me she only finished high school and applied for a secretary job, but they refused to even interview her because she doesn't have a bachelors.
@stefanmakara3732 жыл бұрын
But there was absolutely no need for him to drop out. He wasn't having a great opportunity that could pass him by, he just wanted full shifts in a local store. He could have kept working, got a diploma, and then worked full time. He didn't even CHECK if he could work full time before he dropped out. And it really wasn't that okay to drop out. It still made a difference if your highest form of education was primary school.

So people are saying that because he later became a successful car seller that justified it. The thing is realistic if we think about this like someone actual life that doesn't make sense and we can't actually say if perhaps he would have done something even more amazing with more breadth of knowledge. Maybe unlike sheldon he could have become successful as an engineer or inventor combining his sales,mechanical and breadth of knowledge gained in life. It is good that in the end he did become successful, but education is important especially when we begin to recognize we live in a country where half the population believes multiple counter scientific things about things that actually may affect our understanding of things more relelvent to our daily lives in ways we dont realize as well as our understanding of issues. Georgie deserved to find his own path, but he was actually quite intelligent and in that sense it is understandable why his family might be worried about him not finishing college. While it is good to understand people unique focuses, labeling it street smarts only can actually instead limit the true versatility they have when that may actually simply be the direction they have felt pushed or have benefitted from the most support in especially when he seems to have a large ammount of skills revolving around tactile related abilities not necessarily solely sales skills(his ability with the tires originated as noticing a tactile ability and his already developed sales ability intertwined). Of course at the same time, I also think it is false to assume people can do one thing or learn just one thing but tv shows and our society often present it that way too

diplomas are worth less than nothing. Even 4 year degrees aren't worth much anymore. If you are enterprising and full of energy, you can write you own paycheck without having to grovel to an ungrateful boss.

Not many kids who dropped out actually made it in life unless they have somekind of motivation and goal. I agree with the parents..just finish the highschool and he can do whatever he wants after that..if what he worked on doesnt work at least he finished highschool and could continue back studying..just saying.
