@ShinyVideoStuff4 жыл бұрын
@@NickBurnsFPV it's a must given the local law and lack of totally deserted spots to fly anywhere close to where I live. I've been building to the 250g limit for 12+ months cos anything 250g-20Kg cannot be flown near people and the definition of "near people" appears to rule out all the parks near me. Pressnuts....(hey, you asked!) When I first started building my own custom quads I focused on 4”. They provided durability and a high power to weight ratio. I also built some lightweight 4” models using 1407 Rotorgeek and Brotherhobby motors which I still fly occasionally. I have always felt a 4” quad is a great balance between agility, power and speed. I completely agree with you that a 4” is hard to manage in tight spaces! Since I don’t fly with a go-pro I don’t feel the need for a 5” quad but still fly them sometimes just to take advantage of wide open spaces and the feeling of freedom to just go crazy! Thanks for your take on the Dolphin!

Why i like 4 inch. It was a personal challenge to get the best performance under 250g. The 3 inch drones with 1407+ felt heavy and had terrible flight time. A simple transplant into a 4 inch gave me way more flight time and performance. But now 3 inch makes a lot more sense with single boards and more sensible motors. To each their own

Great review as always. Since you asked here are my .2ct I have a slammed custom 4" with those 1606's EMAX. With an 850 4s GNB I'm at about 248g. Just under the 250g. If 250g is what your after something like this is going to be your best bet. It has it's place if your thinking of imposing laws that might hit us here in the future. It's fun quad but a handful in a small space like that. Your an amzing pilot and you make it look all too easy. The Dolphin would more than a handful for the majority of your users including myself. I have a multitude of quads all from 65mm brushed to brushless whoops (M6) to 2", 2.5",3",4", and several 5". To me my favorite class is a 3" ultralight (NOT A TOOTHPICK) with a higher KV motor (5500-6000) kv on a 3s 650 on a 3mm frame around the 80-95g weight. As light as possible (20A FC, all components being Nano this Nano that). I prefer a wider stator motor where it's more efficient on the lower end of the throttle scale. Like a 12 or 13 size stator. I dont like the heavier 3" setups with the 1407-8, 1506 type they just fly more like a typical 5" and fly much heavier. They are not nearly as versatile as an ultralight. The trick is to build an ultralight and focus on higher KV motors that use a higher current draw. Same weight as a Twig but as fast as a 349 and twice as nimble. I had a build with some 1106 6500kv wich weigh the same as a 1204 5000kv but produce almost double the thrust at the same weight it's truly a fun flight and because it's so light it's also extremely nimble. The only issue with the 1106's on the low end of the throttle it seems very twitchy. Obviously the trade off is efficiency. This build takes the pucker factor to another level, but as you can imagine not very efficient. But once it gets going it's very smooth. The other challenge on a super fast ultralight 3" build is the amount of tweaking required in the tune. (These are my TIPS if you want to run one with your self. Use 16g wire and a 25v CAP. Use a 20-30a AIO FC. A frame with 3mm is suggested but 2.5mm frame wont be very durable but lighter. Use a Nano: Camera, VTX and RX and use some good 3" props like GF or HQ's tri blades for better handling bi-blades for top end runs and run a bit more efficient. BL-Heli set timing to high, In BF set all sliders to .7 to start and adjust from there. I run RDQ's 650's 3s have minimal sag. Or try some Tattu Race line's are also good quality batteries and very light weight. Any other batteries will just instant sag. If you use all of these build tips you will find an extremely fast and nimble 3". Pro's much much faster that what your used too with out loosing out on the nimble flight feeling. Con's very hard on batteries. This isnt for everyone though just the speed junkies. If your looking for 5min+ flight times then look else where. OOps went off the deep end on this one. But none the less love watching your content. (Good frames to try Sanchez 3" 3mm very durable for this power level of course you have to have the frame cut you cant buy it anywhere :-) Keeps you in the exclusive club. But the new 3mm Twig frame would be a good candidate, I had this build on a 3" Primo but arm's shattered when that tree jumped out in front of me. Not a good candidate at all. Dam Fast FPV 3" not well suited. To fragile and lots of noise in the frame. Leader 130 frame good protection but you need to use a 20x20 stack which takes away from that ultralight build type. Anyway I love experimenting and love my toothpicks / twigs are my favorite right now.

I can tell you love to experiment 👍. Its a very good method to find what fits us best. Have to you found there is anything your longing for in your flights?
@gmascagni4 жыл бұрын
@@NickBurnsFPV If anything I wish we had better batteries that had less sag that provided longer flight times with out adding any additional weight. Doing punch outs on this type of build really punishes the batteries and to make matters worse it's addicting it never gets old at least hasn't yet for me. I'm not 100% sure of the accuracy of my current sensor but I've captured 80a+ peak amp draw on low pitch props. Doing a punchout over your house would be amazing. So having a good solid 3 minute flight time would be ideal for me but in order to do that now I would need a much bigger battery and that defeats the whole purpose of nimble flying characteristics you get with an ultralight 3". Right now if I can get a two minute flight in a big field with little sag is decent. If I'm flying in a pine wood forest (my favorite areas to fly) I can extend the flight considerably because your flying much slower and reserving the punch outs for punching out of the canopy and then diving down. I'm working on a new build with 1204's 6500kv to see if I can find a good blend of low end throttle control and still have the insane power. Just waiting on a motor.

It will fry a normal 12a FC. At least I fried by BetaFPV FC after 3 short flights. I got the 1204's confused with the 1206's I think I'm going to gain about 4g with the 1206's will see how it fairs. I think 4" is going to be more popular in the very near-future, especially with the trend toward more lightweight setups. I'm experimenting with a 4" lightweight setup with the Caddx vista. Most 4 inch build don't feel like a micro build because they are still to big and feel like a larger quad. At the same time they don't have the power or speed of a full 5 inch build and cant carry a go-pro. Kind of an odd middle ground that isn't particularly good at being a micro or full size quad. The exam and registration process is ridiculously convoluted and unnecessary for a hobbyist so I have concentrated on building sub 250. 4 inch is about the max performance I've managed while staying sub 250. To be honest the 3 inch are still easier to achieve and in my opinion are still the best option for all around flight characteristics (fun factor?) staying under 250. The BetaFPV 1505 T mount motor has gone a long way to dropping weight on these 4 inch builds. We just need more prop options.

Nice ripping that quad in your backyard. I flew 4 inch years ago, but these quads were slow cruisers compared to this. Like Eachine Falcon 180, with a bulky PWM receiver, and far from durable. Then went to 5 inch, lately mostly 3 inch. ViFly once promised to send me their 150, but then said it was out of stock, and kept stalling. Not sure if they are still in business, but I never got that 150 sample... Sure would not mind trying some of these new 4 inch quads, like the Emax and this one. But rarely get any offers these days. You're sure in a luxury position, being able to turn down offers, and companies actually keep trying to convince you to test their product, when you refuse.

I now see how my description of how this came to me can sound egotistical. Sorry, that was not my intent. There appears to be an advantage to being in the US, I am not sure why, but it seems to me most of the videos I have seen come from those in the US. I wonder if its the purchase market identifiers. I do hope ViFly or Emax gets you a review sample.
@rc-fannl73644 жыл бұрын
@@NickBurnsFPV Appreciate the extra clarification, but let me assure you I didn't take that description in a really negative way. My remark was more intended to highlight the extreme difference in situation. While some get more than they have time to review, or feel like interesting enough to review, on the other end of the spectrum, some would be happy with anything to test, even a VTX or a camera instead of a full quad. Apart from market being an influence, in your case you're popular for a reason, you do a very good job demonstrating these quads and other RC stuff. I can understand why a company like GEPRC would try again and again to convince you to try their product. What I don't understand is how some companies don't even take the effort to reply to questions from "normal" RC people. Last time I got a reply from GEPRC for instance, was almost a year ago. Emax replied 2 times, on a question about my purchased Tinyhawk S, and then nothing. Last time I heard from Vifly was 1 1/2 years ago, that's why I wonder if they are still in business. Doubt I'll be testing a "next generation" 4 inch soon... I have things to fly though, not grounded, but you will probably recognize the challenge of exploring something new, finding out what makes it tick, and how loud it ticks, tocks, etc. ;-) And then being able to help others with questions about this new product, and share the experience. Since imho RC is not purely about how much fun you can have with something, but sharing this fun.

Hi Nick, I have been thinking about getting one of these ultralight toothpicks for a couple months or so now because I want something that has some speed to it but the flying weight will be less then 250g's. I've only flown micro's with 3 inchws or less prop size so far and i have a great time with them but they just don't satisfy my need to go fast anymore. I was actually looking hard at this drone that your reviewing the geprc dolphin and the betafpv twig4, after some research I figured if I end up getting one I would go with this one because of the price and the motors used with prop nut will have more options for different props compared to what beta fpv is using for motors with t-mounted props, there's not many options for those props4 inches because its a fairly new thing in that size. It also helps knowing you had a good experience with it too before making a purchase.

I think shooting for a "perfect" pid tune is a long shot, pids can be great but not what some people want. I have had people get quads from my giveaways and love the tune and others not so much. I would shoot for good. This allows a base that those who have something specific they desire to slightly tweak. I think we are somewhat agreeing. :)
