@GeraldUndone - at 8:29 talk about how you could use this with a wireless transmitter module to get 32bit flow wirelessly. But wouldn't the monitoring audio output NOT be 32bit? Since you can change the gain on the output, this leads me to believe the benefits of 32bit would not passively transfer through the built in output. Thanks for this video! I've been waiting for it.
@geraldundone3 жыл бұрын
Right, yeah, and you might run into line level vs mic level issues. My thinking was more for just monitoring. You still record locally on the 32-bit recorder, but you attach a wireless transmitter so you can monitor the sound wirelessly.
@david2431213 жыл бұрын
@@geraldundone Gotcha. Thanks for the quick reply. Here's a use: If you're syncing in post via Multicam Clip in FCPX based on audio, you could wirelessly shoot the monitor audio into your camera from afar, making syncing a breeze, sin timecode ;). I saw another comment asking if they could use a L/R channel 3.5 splitter to record 2 audio sources simultaneously. I was thinking- similarly to the use-case above, use your Rode (or w/e brand) wireless transmitter on one subject, and place the receiver on the other subject, receiving into the R channel. Then the other Lav, on the 2nd subject goes into the L channel.

Excellent review Gerald. A few things to add. The Zoom F2 can currently only power lavs up-to 2.5V whereas the Tentacle will do 5V. This may change with the release model. Zoom are also looking into an Android app. As a professional sound recordist the F2-BT makes more sense to me ;if they can fix the 2.5V as I already own a plethora of lavs and I have the Timecode Systems Blue, which will sync all F2-BT (you only need to buy one unit and it's very cheap). The headphone output is a big deal for me as I need to attach radio mics to the device too. Zoom have obviously got deeper pockets than Tentacle ;)

What pairing scheme is used, what's the security mechanism, on the different Bluetooth option? Neither devices manual covers this which makes me very uneasy, it makes me a bit afraid it might be "Just Works" pairing scheme that would be pretty bad on an open set, would not some jerk f* with the devices. (Tentacle's manual suggest a device can only be paired if held close to the phone which confuses me, is there some low-audio syncing scheme involved?) Nothing I shoot is mission critical, but I still be pretty sad/upset to find out everything was corrupt due to someone playing around with their phones and mess with devices. Or just two different crews on same area accidentally pairing to the other crews devices. On other devices like headphones etc you typically have to do something to enable pairing, so it is Just Works scheme but only enabled when you explicitly ask for it.

As a general rule is it better to put the hair light on the same side as the key light? I mean I like how you have this it looks cool but every time I see one of your videos I can't help but wonder that. I think it's neat to make the fill side pop with the hair light. I just wonder if subliminally it could mess up the natural flow of unconscious expectations. I suppose the key light coming from a natural source could potentially reflect and create a catacorner rim. It seems to create a nice balance in your case. I had just been researching it trying to get ideas for my studio. Most of the diagrams show the Key light and hair light on the same side of the subject with the fill light all by itself usually focused on the subjects better side side typically their are left. The problem with that common scenario portrayed in Google images demonstrating how to do this it seems like it would be the hair light getting in the shot since the fill light is the side to shoot at for interview style videos at least. Of course yours is instructional but I wonder if the same rules still apply or even matter or are even rules. I get that a lot of this may be subjective and just do whatever fills right I guess just curious more as a general rule and what your thought process was setting your lights up.

I think the best result is most cases is placing the hair light in a direct path opposite of the key light as if they were opposing one another. Like 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock for example. And then have the fill light cut in perpendicular, so at 10 o'clock in that example.

My friend bought a same f2 BT, and used for moto-vlogging as well, and he got the same problem! So, I’m wondering if that’s our problems of setting or the problem of this device? Because the problems we’ve got seem like not a real 32 bit float recorder. (Ps, we tried different microphones, and the motorcycles were not super super loud, so we don’t think the volume went over the limit of the microphones. One of the microphones is the Rode videomicro, and the maximum spl is 140 db. We are pretty sure the motorcycles’ volume is lower than 140db, we’ve tried to put the microphones in helmet and some other places to avoid wind too) Tried some hard and so much headaches now! 🤣 What do you think about our situation? I really don't get the fixation on 32-bit audio for something like this that's targeted to lavalier work and doesn't even have balanced inputs. The sorts of miniature mics that we connect to these recorders have inherently limited dynamic range due to elevated equivalent noise and low saturation SPL. 24 bits supports 144 dB of theoretical dynamic range, and maybe 120 dB or so in reality once you allow for the fact that you need a few extra bits so that the mic noise floor is comfortably above quantization. Pro-level lavaliers have dynamic ranges of 100 dB (Sanken COS-11D) to ~117 dB (Shure TL-47). If you can set the gain even vaguely close to the optimum for your mic (such that digital saturation lines up with mic saturation), then a good 24-bit path will faithfully capture every sound that the mic can deliver. That's why you don't see pro-level wireless suppliers like Audio Limited or ZAXCOM making any moves in this direction. Their customers don't need it, and they all know it. 32b does make sense for studio level mics. The best of those can capture ~140 dB of dynamic range (example: Austrian Audio OC818 with 9 dB EIN and 148 dB saturation SPL, for 139 dB DR). Similarly the preamps on the best recorders can also deliver close to 140 dB of dynamic range (example: MixPre II at 142 dB). 32 bits makes sense here because 24b gives you about 120 dB of practical DR, so you're leaving mic/preamp DR on the table unless you move up to 32. 32b would be utterly pointless on a camera with a 3.5 mm stereo jack, for similar reasons. The mics that you would connect to those just aren't going to deliver enough dynamics.
@paulfairchild89423 жыл бұрын
But lots of prosumer users set the gain wrong, and they get clipping and ruined audio. Having 32-bit float audio allows then to de-clip those bits. I use it on my Mixpre 6 Gen II and it saved my bacon a few times.
@patrickchase56143 жыл бұрын
@@paulfairchild8942 Yes, and I use it with my MixPre IIs (3 and 10) as well when recording with high-dynamic range mics. It's saved me from sloppy gain-setting more than once. The difference here and the point I was trying to make is that the dynamic range of lav mics in particular is so small that you can literally determine the gain once for 24-bit recording, and accurately capture every sound that mic will ever hear between its noise floor and its saturation point. You will have to adjust gain when switching between mics with different sensitivities, but the gain that you use for each brand/model of mic can be a fixed value that you write on a cheatsheet somewhere. I think that where people really get into trouble is by trying to over-optimize the gains in 24-bit recording, i.e. by recording too "hot" in an effort to avoid the noise floor. You have to do that with some camera bodies because their preamps are so crappy, but not with pro-level recorders. 20+ dB of headroom is totally reasonable.

How can monitoring sound recording be patented and therefore unavailable to other recording hardware brands? Why? This is awful. Are there another brands prohibited to do so other than Tentacle Sync?

Gerald forgot to mention one important detail. The tentacle track E has the option to change the plug in power voltage. High end lav mics like the DPA or the cos11d need 5 Volts. The zoom only has one plug in power voltage which can only deliver 2.5 volts, the track E has several voltage settings. Not having the right voltage will limit the sensitivity of certain lav mics.

Thanks for this comment! I have the zoom f2 and used it with the Shure Twinplex TL47 and felt like something was limiting it from sounding its best. Didn't know what it was until reading your comment.

Tough call. As an audio engineer, I would prefer to use a better lav mic than either of the ones included, but if I had to use the included mic, I might actually prefer the ZOOM. It's easier (and faster) to EQ out the boxiness in the ZOOM mic than to address the noise on the TRACK E mic. I was pretty surprised at how loud the noise was on the TRACK E.

great comparison. One thing you didn't mention is that in the F2BT, you can only work with one unit at a time via the app, whereas the Tentacle Sync, you can control and view levels on more than one device at a time via the app.

you forgot one big difference in your review. The F2 has only 2.5V phantom output while the Track E has 5V. If you want to use a quality mic like the sanken cos-11 or dpa 4060/6060 the F2 isn't an option as the both need 5V.

Nice video. In an email I got from Zoom a while back they said it does stereo at 44.1khz and mono at 48khz. Is that how the unit you have works? I don't think I'd want to work with 44.1khz, but getting stereo recording at 32-bit could be useful for a lot of people. A dual head lapel would help limit shirt noise ruining a recording. I do a lot of outdoors stuff with my main audio with a stereo lapel plus an Olympus LS-P4 recorder. There have been times where I needed to pick a specific mic to use over the other one or splice them in post. It's too bad the Zoom doesn't have a simple timecode solution. The Timecode systems blue device that it works with has limited capabilities. :(

I'll be completely honest, I was so blown away with the Track E I almost got it blind but this vid definitely reminded me to check all the options first.

Having owned Zoom Recorders for years and currently owning four Tentacle Sync E, hands down, I will be buying the Track E over the Zoom. The Zoom is, I am sure, a fine product but I like Tentacle products better in general. How they operate, feel, the out of box experience is just better.
