A nice sample of Gerard Souzay's beautiful signing. Why is he not more popular? He had everything...

Gerard Souzay was one of the greatest lyric baritones of the Twentieth Century. Though he sang infrequently in opera, his legacy lies in his sheer genius as a recitalist. Truly an artist to his fingertips.

A wonderful singer - what legato line and clarity of French diction. I heard one of Souzay's last recitals in Nice at the opera house. His voice was tired and it took about 20 minutes before he seemed comfortable vocally, but once his voice was warmed up his artistry was spell binding.

He was one of my favorite singers of all time. I wish I would have sent him a fan letter before he passed away.

@@baritonebynight I think it is sad that Souzay didn't do that much coaching / teaching - a whole generation of singers could have benefited from his wisdom.
@nonenoneonenonenone27 күн бұрын
@@Tenortalker I think he did teach in France, and the circle around Pierre Bernac, Thomas Grubb, Elly Ameling, did teach what his singing reflected.

Really lovely video- I've heard many (most?) of Souzay's records but barely ever seen footage of him singing. He really was as handsome as photos show, but even without the visuals he was surely the greatest singer of his generation.
