Some people think that the "Z" is pronounced like "Ts". Why turn a soft “T” into an aggressive “Ts”. What is the reason for this? Where are the German teachers who can explain this? T > Ts > Z Holt > Holts > Holz Salt > Salts > Salz setten > settsen > setzen sitten > sittsen > sitzen Tange > Tsange > Zange Telt > Tselt > Zelt ten > tsen > zehn Tinn > Tsinn > Zinn to > tso > zo, zu Toll > Tsoll > Zoll Tunge > Tsunge > Zunge thwang > Tswang > Zwang twelef > tswelef > zwölf twentig > tswentsig > zwanzig

The sound I struggle with the most is "ör" followed by a consonant. Zum Beispiel: Eichhörnchen oder Hörnchen (it's sad that I can't pronounce it, since it's my favourite thing to get at a bakery) I also wonder: does an H after a Ü change the vowel sound? To my ear, the letter U (both with and without the umlaut) seems to sound slightly different depending on what follows. I feel like there are so many versions... Could be my imagination, though😊

A really helpful video for beginners like me! Thank you very much. I recently spent a week in Schleswig-Holstein, staying with German friends, and I spoke a lot of German! But they criticized me for how I pronounced "S" and "Z". For example they said that "S" at the beginning of a word should be pronounced like "Z". Where as "Z" at the beginning of a word should be pronounced "TS". Is that correct? Thanks for a great video and channel. Grusse aus England!

17:34 This is very characteristic when this "spills over" to other languages, esp. church texts in Greek, as in the characteristically German pronunciation of "kÜrie eleison". I remember watching Bach's Messe h-moll once, performed by the Thomanerchor Leipzig under Herbert Blomstedt. Everyone sang "kYrie eleison" (as is the (sort of) norm). Obviously Blomstedt, who is Swedish, had some talking-to done during the rehearsals 🙂
@emilwandel7 ай бұрын
But you know Bach is a German composer and Latin is often pronounced differently depending on the surrounding language. I often can't even understand English people pronouncing Latin. Very few people actually are educated about different Latin pronounciation rules.
@JanPBtest7 ай бұрын
@@emilwandel Yes, that's why I said "sort of the norm". I thought it was interesting that the conductor obviously must have sacrificed some of the rehearsal time for that sort of thing. Another thing that not too many conductors insist upon when performing St. John Passion is to make the "e" really short in the opening "Herr!" chorus (speaking of short and long vowels). But this has more to do with the style of the music (avoiding making the Passion sound like an operatic aria which was considered sinful at the time) than the German language. Sorry to digress. As for the "Latinglish", yes, especially pronouncing the final "-i" as "-eye" (e.g. in _corpus delicti_ or _modus operandi)_ drives me crazy 🙂
