I am a masters student in munich and have an offer to do a semester abroad in greece which requires a visa to go there for the semester. I am worried that this would end my residence streak in germany when I go to apply for citizenship and have to prove "continual residence" but would germany be able to see that I had a visa to another EU country or should I be fine? The semester abroad is 5 months. Any advice would be amazing as I cannot find answers.

I don't think this will be a problem. Once you are registered with a university in Germany, you are still recognized as a student here even if you have a semester abroad. It should still count.

What about students who have stayed in Germany for five years, are they also eligible?

There are a few criteria you need to meet. But generally speaking yes. You need to proof that you can "independently secure your livelihood". But your time as student counts to the 5 year "residence time".

As a German I'm glad these laws finally get modernized. We need workers from the outside to feel welcome and a part of society.
