On second watch, I’m not sure if you noticed the voice that came in at 3:00 in the background singing falsetto was indeed Jimmy Barnes. He was singing these ridiculously high notes very early on in the song!

Great song, great band. Ok, some background info on Cold Chisel: They started as a heavy metal band also doing Led Zeppelin covers in Adelaide, South Australia. It’s a five-piece, Steve Prestwich on drums (he wrote When The War Is Over and Forever Now, a couple of their biggest hits), Phill Small on bass (who wrote My Baby, a basic but very popular rock hit for them), Don Walker on keyboards (Don was their primary songwriter, and he is almost Bruce Springsteen-like in terms of being able to capture the essence of a simple working-class existence in Australia. He wrote anywhere from 50-95% of the songs on their albums), Ian Moss on lead vocals and guitar (Like The Beatles, Cold Chisel had two main vocalists, and Ian is the more soulful of the two. Ian also Bow River, one of their biggest hits and very much a quintessential Cold Chisel song), and of course Jimmy Barnes on lead vocals (Jimmy also wrote a couple of their big hits such as Rising Sun, You Got Nothing I Want and Goodbye (Astrid, Goodbye) (co-written with Don Walker). They only made five proper studio albums over the first 11 years before they split up. In the end tension between Jimmy and Steve became too much, they used to have physical fights with each other, and Steve left partway through recording of their last album, although he played on their Last Stand concerts after their breakup. The first album Cold Chisel was pretty raw, the second album Breakfast At Sweethearts was similar and suffered from a bit of an odd mix. Still, they had some great tunes, and showed diversity from blues rock to reggae to jazz-laden material. Then they put out their third album East, which was the first to feature songs contributed from all members of the band. It’s arguably their strongest album. The fourth album Circus Animals was also extremely good, with lots of songs from different members. Finally they put out Twentieth Century, their fifth studio album. It as some very strong songs, very big hits, but probably a bit less cohesive as an album than East or Circus Animals. One thing worth noting is the quality of Jimmy’s vocals. I know a lot of people love his screams, but I think he’s better when he’s got a touch more soul than when he’s in full belt mode. I think by their fifth album the years of touring had taken their toll on his voice. His peak vocals are also around East and Circus Animals. There’s great performances by him before and after, but it can be a little saturated with scream tones. I have numerous songs I’d recommend of theirs, mostly studio versions (for instance I far prefer their studio version of When The War Is Over - the live version is excellent, but it’s better when you can contrast it to the original). So, my Cold Chisel suggestions are: Saturday Night Bow River Standing On The Outside Forever Now Flame Trees When The War Is Over As for Little River Band, songs I’d recommend are Reminiscing, lonesome Loser, Help Is On It’s Way. Just a little side note, Steve Prestwich from Cold Chisel had a short stint in Little River Band for a year or so. Final note, another famous Australian singer songwriter back in the 70-80s era was Richard Clapton, and he did some work with Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss (and some members of INXS) resulting in a song called I Am An Island, which is a great rock track (although if you see the video it has a different guitarist miking to Ian’s awesome guitar-work). That’s about all I’ve got to say.

I love how the young woman is totally getting into it, to her friends amusement, even though she probably wasn't born when the song was first released. Something like three generations of Australians in the audience.

No, the original singer wasn't Jimmy Barnes, it was Ian Moss, absolute legend, considered one of the greatest guitarists in Australian Rock history, and such a wonderful singer. Saw him live a month ago doing a solo acoustic show ... absolutely amazing!

Yep, thumbs up. Another underrated band (in Europe and the US), but really big in Australia. The list of my favourite Aussie Bands/Singers: 1. AC/DC 2. Bee Gees (born in the UK) 3. INXS 4. Midnight OIL 5. Rose Tattoo 6. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds + Kylie Minogue ("Where The Wild Roses Grow" made her immortal) 7. Little River Band 8. Easybeats 9. Silverchair 10. Cold Chisel ...as always just my 2cents...

Oh they unblocked it at last? Great one Toby this is an awesome song! Cold chisel were a fantastic band right ?! A lot of Cold Chisel songs take on this format of Ian Moss starting out and Jimmy Barnes coming in with his all powerful voice later in the song. Bow river is one of their most iconic songs together.

Just a comment..... Jimmy doesn't scream. He has vibrato in his voice. Listen more closely. He has had a singing career since the late 70s . He has always sung like this. If he was just screaming he would have blown his voice out long ago. He has a huge vocal range and belting power....not screaming. JS,,🤷
