Holy crap. It's pretty rare to find someone who speaks native German and perfect English. I finally understand why the German books I'm reading use words like "ging" and "liefte." I've rarely heard those words spoken in German, but I read them in books all the time. Now it all makes sense.

Danke, Jenny!

@johntokyo13 жыл бұрын
In the video Jenny recommends not using the Präteritum when talking to people, to instead use the Perfekt (haben + past tense). However, in many of her other videos, she does use the Präteritum in examples that seem to suggest daily conversational German. Is she assuming that her use of the Präteritum in these examples is not in daily conversation but in written German?

Why not "Ich habe das Buch lesen gemusst" in 7:18 ? Or "Am Tisch haben wir das Handy nicht benutzen gedurft" in 7:23? Those are the examples of Perfekt with modal verbs and, though it's unusual, my question is pretty much based on grammar terms only.
@morlewen72185 жыл бұрын
In the south of Germany, in Austria and Switzerland always use perfect - for modal and helping verbs too. Otherwise you sound very wierd in these regions. The phenomenon is called Upper German Preterite Loss. Jenny is from a region belonging to low or medium German. Therefore modal verbs in perfect sound wierd to her. In addition high German speakers do not have the distinction between preterite and perfect. The distinction is made in region were lower german was/is spoken. Since English derived to a great extent from saxon (lower saxon) the English language has the different usage of simple past and past perfect.
@lingoniGERMAN5 жыл бұрын
Well you can’t generalize that anymore... I go to Munich a lot and there are so so many people from Northern Germany living in Munich now and lots of foreigners too. You won’t find a lot of people speaking a very hard Bavarian dialect in Munich either. So you’ll also find people using Präteritum in Munich. (Can’t speak for other cities in the South but that is what I have observed.)
@morlewen72185 жыл бұрын
@@lingoniGERMAN You are right with Munich. As a powerhouse the city attracts many people from Germany and all over the world. Threrefore you hear more weird things nowadays in Munich. I am living there. But it goes also in the other direction. You hear more "in your ears" weird things in the north. Still after so many decades and partially centuries you still can distingiush between the regions of Low and High German. Eachj part has its own quirks in terms of language. Prepositions with Genitiv versus Prepositions withe Dative, ich ahe gestanden vs ich bin gestannden, die Socke vs der Socken etc. Maybe you already know this side: www.atlas-alltagssprache.de/ It is a great side showing the usage of many words in different regions of Germany. In many cases you still can see the old border betweeen low and High Gerrmen or between Upper German and the rest. It also explains why we sound weird ti eachother in some cases. :)
