My Grandfather gave me one of those when I was 8. It was the #3, but it came with a different type of filter - maybe a civilian type. It didnt come with a container, but it did come with a musette bag. This was in 1988, so the surplus market was awash with every type of gas mask imaginable.

That gas mask is still in great condition, that said it is 50 years old!

I got myself one of these M65 as well it’s one of my favourite German gas mask mine was made 1968, with original filter never open still sealed with yellow string tag. I also got two GP-5 Russian mask 1979 and the most creepiest piece in my collection from Soviet Russia a Child’s gas mask PDF-D 1986.

The M65 is a great mask! Sounds like you have some interesting pieces in your collection. Child sized gas masks are extra creepy and sad at the same time. Must have been very scary to live in a time where you thought you might have to protect your children from gas or nuclear attacks.

If they have been stored properly they are a quality mask for sure!

The white "oxidation" is probably not oxidation, but some kind og talc or other slip compound from the moulding, or to prevent tight packing of materials to stick over time

I would agree but after wiping it away....it comes back! Old plastic is known to do this. However it is common for the mask itself to be coated in talcum powder to prevent it from sticking to itself. A while back I owned nearly 100 WW2 era masks and each one was covered in it before being wrapped in paper.

If the filter is scratched is it safe? It doesn't have any dents and doesn't leak charcoal

normaly there is no "oxidation" but conservation: talcum powder.

Great video I think..... I might be wrong..... But you might have the civil M65z, but with the Military M65 voice diaphragm. The M65Z is brown, also has the glasses connection inside at the nose bridge, with small holes. Usually would have the rubber voice diaphragm cover. The Military M65 would be green rubber.

My mask is a dark OD green but the lighting of the video might make it look otherwise. Your question is something that I wondered myself when I first got this mask a couple of years back. I have seen m65s with m65z features and m65z masks with m65 features. Some of the disputed features are the glasses connection, thickness of the rubber between the two, neck strap (or lack thereof), and markings inside the mask. Auer also made these masks and it seems they used slightly different molds and I believe this has caused some confusion as well. I think I will email Draeger and see if they have an archives department so that we can clear this up.
