@FantomShooter I actually have gotten some silica packets, they're reusable. There's a small window that you can see the small beads, and when they turn pink, they're saturated with water, so you bake them for about 2 hours and they'll turn back blue, and then you can toss them into your cans again.

@99LightningSVT byf is the code for Mauser Orbendorff, if memory serves me right. Doesn't the receiver have a year stamped on it? Like "byf 43" or "byf 44" or just "byf 4" ? It's also possible that various factories didn't all standardize their serializing procedure because they each operated independently, and didn't always take orders lol. For example, the Steyr-Daimler-Puch factory never reported in certain alterations of manufacturing when ordered to.

to answer your question on what the markings mean on the ammo can. Let me preface by saying this is just an educated guess and i am not a US army supply officer. The M13 means the cartridges are on the M13 disintegrating links. the "1 M62 - 4 M80" means that the bullets are setup in the chain in a "1 tracer - 4 ball" configuration. meaning every 5th round is a tracer.

I recently traded an all original non refurbished 1943 Long Branch No4 Mk1 for a Gew 88 and wanted to research what loads and diameter bullets to use and came across all the info on Bullet diameters J .318 and JS .323 Great videos by the way I am about to subscribe. I like how detailed you get in your instruction good for people that are just learning.

The Kar 98k is a good legendary rifle, yet now it is getting more expensive and harder to get(especially the good conditioned ones). I like the SKS rifle. I also like The M1 Garand, and the Springfield 1903 rifles, again the M1 and Springfield 1903 are more expensive to get , the M1 is a prohibited weapon ? Ammo of the Garand and Springfield 1903 are also not cheap.

@something01992 you mentioned @3:51 that those are "Romanian Steel Case" Do you mean its jacketed in steel? If so the penetration would be deeper compare to ordinary jacket?? Isn't it legal in the States?? By the way, your vintage rifle collections are awesome. Cheers!

Very interesting videos. I have a RAX 88, ERFURT 1890. I know it's not the same rifle, but it looks pretty close. I am missing the magazine plate, or what ever it is that fills in the hole where the rounds would go. Do you know where I could find out info for what I'm missing? Also not sure if this rifle shoots same size ammo as your KAR 98. I'm not even sure if this is a German rifle.

for the numbers on the ammo can 1 M62 - 4 M80 means 1 Tracer and 4 Ball rounds (full metal jacket) on a belt. M13 means they came on m13 disintegrating links (belt) most likely for use on an m60 or similar mounted machinegun. the other stuff is lot numbers and date.

yes the german army used ballistol in ww1 and ww2. actually we still use it today. good thing about ballistol is that it's not poison, you could drink it if you feel like. also it was used to treat small wounds and such because it also works as a disinfectant. cost only around 5$ per bottle.

thanks for the videos. How much force(i.e. pounds) required to trigger a primer( rifle bullet) ? Will a bullet drops from 2 storeys or 3 storeys squarely on concrete ground triggers the bullet primer ? It is a safety question. Also, people said that an ammo can ( military metal type) without vent holes with bullets stored inside may explode if the ammo can get hot by a house fire, do you need to drill holes on the ammo can ? thanks.

@Gungeek Jesus, I need to get a chrono and clock those Turkish rounds, when I finally land a job at my university and get some money lol. I always knew they were hot, but I thought the 3000 fps figures were inflated. The Turkish rounds always gave me a little trouble on initial extraction, so I suspected they must have been around 2700 or 2800 lol.

@99LightningSVT I have an excellent book on Kar98k serial numbers, but it's at home and I'm at summer school. Germans did their serial numbers in blocks of 10,000. The first 10,000 of a year would be 1-10,000, then they start over at 1a-10,000a, then it goes on from 1b-10,000b, and on and on until the next year. Your best bet for ammo is local. I find that the bets deals for me are local gun shops and ranges. Beats having to pay for shipping, and you can inspect the rounds for corrosion.

I need some more context. I believe the Mauser to be better constructed and better engineered, but they are mroe expensive in today's market. Both rounds are available, but surplus Russian ammo is more available and cheaper. I paid 120 ish dollars for my Mosin and 600 for my Kar98k (both were bought back in 2010). And thank you for subbing :)

@impalor1979 thanks. Is it necessary to drill holes in the ammo can (military metal ammo can) to prevent buildinging up pressure inside of the ammo can ? Just curious, do you know how much pounds of force required to trigger the primer ? ( 5 pounds etc ?) thanks.

I am so happy to hear that you have learned so much from my videos. It really warms my heart and really brings to light why I made these videos in the first place: to help others learn. My Kar98k was my second rifle (traded in my first, a Yugoslavian 24/47, for $200 store credit to help pay for the Kar98k), and I fully plan on passing it down to my son when that time comes. If I don't have a son, I want it and my remains placed in a rocket, and shot into the sun. Until then, it remains the pride of my bolt action collection.

It will be either my son or daughters. I had him shooting at the same age I first got to. I got my butt wipped because I dissasembled it when little and my Granfather had to take it to a gunsmith to put it back together, I think I took a typwriter apart too, to clean it with the same results. Thanks for comment.

@AngeloTheRaccoon
@AngeloTheRaccoon 13 жыл бұрын
About the bayonet, having the sharp edge up is better, if you're in a close combat situation it's better to come up from your hip area and hitting the enemy's stomach where there's less chance of encountering bones and it guarantees a hit.

Just so you know the J and JS ammo are not the same. The J ammo is .318 (1888) used into WW1. In or around 1905 The JS is .323 .005 larger then the J The early German rifles used the J/.318 ammo so when Germany switched they did not want the confusion or tragedy of troops shooting .323 diameter rounds through the lighter/less strong actions of the 1888 rifles which were still in service. Long story short the J and JS rounds are not the same. I read that tonight or I would not have known either.

You should really try Ballitol. It smells good, it is not toxic, it can also be used for wood and leather care. It can even be used for cooking in the field. Only disadvantage is, it is washed away by water. btw you k98 would be happy with it, it would feel like home.^^

something important you should mention is that all your surplus ammo is corrosive and if it sits in that barrel it will corrode and destroy any worth or usability of the weapon. you must thoroughly clean the weapon after each use if you decide to shoot corrosive military surplus ammo.

Although "JS" ist written on a lot of ammo-boxes, the suffix "JS" is WRONG. The right historic suffix is ONLY "IS" - this is german and means "Infanterie Spitzgeschoß" = "IS" = in english "infantery pointed bullet". 8mm Mauser = 8x57 IS = 7,92x57 IS. Greetings from Austria.

The Mosin Nagant ammunition is easier to come by and goes for $125.00 per 440 rounds. The Mosin is well made, but not as glamorous.I like both and shoot both. If you can get a Kar 98 k get one. hey guys, I just picked one up for myself, cleaned it all out, everything looks pretty good now that it got it's bath. The one thing that kinda bothers me is that when turning the bolt to cock the firing pin, it feels harder than it should. It's like the safety is rubbing excessively against the cocking cam, because one it's fully cocked and the safety is in the mid safe position, the bolt turns real smooth. When the safety is down in the fire position, turning the bolt is still kinda rough and you can feel a little bit of catching on the cocking cam. Only other thing I can think of is the spring being a replacement and has too much tension. But the safety itself is a bit beat up and rough and looks like it could be smoothed, so I think that's the culprit. Appreciate any ideas anybody has.

Great videos! I'm gearing up to buy my own Kar98k, but it's difficult for me to obtain milsurp in Australia. What can you recommend in terms of modern 8mm that best matches your Yugo rounds? ~Mike

Good videos man! Thanks for posting this. I have a Mauser myself, its a Turk. I have all of the same ammo you have, and trust me the Romanian Steel clips are a PAIN IN THE ASS. I ended up replacing them with my Brass ones from the turk ammo.

5:48 You would NOT want that happening during wartime! I bet a few soldiers experienced that and were terrified!
