I agree with you on Alligatoah. He is definitely a great musician. Udo Jürgens is definitely a bit more difficult. On one hand he would definitely fit into a Schlager Playlist or the classics list in the end. On the other hand you could argue that he doesn’t really belong into the video because he is Austrian and shaped the Austrian music scene probably even more than the German one. So it’s debatable if he fulfills the criteria.

I thought "okay whats that 55 year old dude here?" starting out as a punk band, becoming entertainment gods (even featured in the tagesschau), forming awareness for crtitical thinking, self development as teenagers. thier songs are funny, catchy and a lot of them have a high rate of sarcasm/ darker humor and have a message.

There was also this interesting phenomenon in the 90s of German producers recording Eurodance songs, often 1 hit wonders, with foreign (usually US but others too) singers, songs and artists that no one necessarily loves but *every* millennial knows. Those would include Captain Jack, Snap! (Rhythm Is A Dancer, The Power), La Bouche, Mr. President (Coco Jambo), Haddaway (What Is Love, yes it's German), Culture Beat (Mr. Vain), Milli Vanilli... Here's some of what you missed: Singer/songwriters like Reinhard Mey and others, especially lyrically dense songs like 'Narrenschiff" and "Das Meer", and verbal imagery like 'Gute Nacht, Freunde" and "Manchmal da fallen mir Bilder ein". Singers who go way back, like Marlene Dietrich and Zarah Leander, or guys that tug on the heartstrings, like Freddy and Heino. If you dare, try on some songs in Austro/Bavarian dialect, like Ambros, Danzer, or Kapfinger. Of course, once the party gets going and everybody is good and liquored, it's time for "Grieeeechischer Weiiiiin, ist so wie das BLUUUT der Erde .....".

Well - for a Cologne based production it almost borders on heresy not to mention BAP ! xD For Ostrock there is KARAT , who were quite big in the German speaking world as well. An important NDW Band missing is IDEAL (well - at least they got most famous during that fad) In the Metal world there are and have been a good number of German bands with a lot international recognition - but that might be to "special interest" to get mentioned. And don't get me started on the "oldschool" / first wave of German HipHop - also a very usefull source for German learners who are into rap. Absolute Beginner(Jan Delay) , EinsZwo(Dendeman) , 5SterneDeluxe , Fettes Brot - just to mention some of the most commercially sucessfull (with a northern bias on my part) - but there are many more...

Herbert Grönemeyer helps me so much with his beautiful German language and his hopeful and humorous lyrics. Btw some of the pictures you choose of him are amongst my favorites he was so cute in the 1980's.

One of my favorite german rock groups is Guano Apes out of Göttingen. They were around in the 90s and early 2000s. Then there is the H-Blockx from Münster. There are many more and you've already mentioned many of the artists I like.

WHAT IS MISSING??? Just start to browse the playlist history of VIVA TV from the 90's. I loved to watch it after tthe school when I got home. And I'm missing those times so much. I was born and grown up in Hungary and I was 15 yrs old in 1995 when I found VIVA TV on the cable tv and it was a LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.

Rachel, I have been a German metal fan myself for 40 years - but only those singing in English. I love Scorpions, Accept, Helloween, Running Wild, Tyrant from the 1980s. But it would be a terrible mistake to ignore Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and even Handel, Mozart, Strauss... I mean, if you really need to cover German music in your videos, you need to start working on a documentary, because their musical contribution is immense, far beyond rock'n roll. Oh I must also add Ritchie Blackmore to the world's greatest German rockers of all time 🤣

I know that this video is mostly about German musicians but I think some notable Austrian musicians shouldve been mentioned too, like my current personal favourite (though his peak was around the 70‘s Schlager scene) Peter Alexander with songs like „Wie Böhmen noch Bei Österreich war“ or „Mädchen Weine Nicht“ or „Bei Uns zuHaus“ or „Die kleine Kneipe" Another thing I think shouldve been included was the Volksmusik scene with musicians like Heino with songs like „Blau Blüht der Enzian“ or „Edelweiss (Soll Ich Denn Mein Junges Leben)“

Ostrock! Especially if you were raised behind the Wall, you will sure know Karat's "Über Sieben Brücken", City's "Am Fenster", the Puhdy's "Eisbär" or Keimzeit's "Kling Klang". Or, if you were raised after the Wall came down, but your parents still blast the same Maxi-Ostalgie-CD they bought in 1999 or so :)

It's also worth noting that german music really likes to mix genres. A lot of rock and metal bands mix techno with metal for example, my favourite being Eisbrecher.

I think I recognize that store (thanks to that car) but I'm not sure because I went there only once (years ago - when my brother and I travelled to Cologne, Germany for a Florence & the Machine concert) but was this shot at the Music Store? A German band I enjoy is Wolfsheim which musically can be described as new wave synth pop.

German carnival music is the best. Although I’m more of a metal head and typically listen to German stuff like Kreator and Destruction, I have a soft spot for happy/goofy carnival jams. Mainly because I grew up in Germany as a military brat and associate good times to that music.
