The German Prayer Book of the Margravine of Brandenburg is a highly intimate and profusely illuminated manuscript produced in Augsburg, southern Germany, in the year 1520. At the time, Augsburg was not only a hotbed for commerce and finance but also one of the major centers of German book illumination. The 189 sheets were decorated by Narziss Renner, a young miniaturist whose style was influenced by Burgkmair, Cranach, wood sculptor Albrecht Altdorfer, and by Flemish and Italian manuscript illuminators. The patrons of the work are Kasimir, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, and his wife, Susanna of Bavaria, whose portraits and coats-of-arms both decorate the manuscript; Susanna personally selected most of the religious scenes in this richly decorated manuscript.
