Another long track finding its way to my channel. Coke Studio Pakistan was providing us with a classical 16 minute qawwal. The most special about this is the weird rhythm that continues throughout the whole song. Regarding the vocalists the focus is set, while the instruments assisting the performance in the background. Lyrically the "bracelet" remained a riddle for me, while I could figure out and guess a little bit. Most clearly this song is traditional and spiritual as we are used to it from Coke Studio Pakistan.

In an interview, Rohail Hyatt (the producer of Coke Studio then) had admitted that none of the musicians present really knew where the song would take them (nor when it would end), but they went along and thank god, they did. For in its 16 minutes, ‘Kangna’ effortlessly encapsulates all the splendour and magnificence of the 700-odd years of the Qawwali tradition.

This is a 10 beat rhythm cycle known as “JHAPTAAL” in Indian classical music. This is counted as 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3. U can see they clap on beat 1, 3 and 8. Count from start and u will get surprised that they always land on 1.

This song was written by 'Bedam Shah Warsi' und 'Mirza Qateel' aus "Warsi" Sufi order. On the outer form of the song the lyrics are saying that the 'Kangana' (a type of beautifully designed colourful bracelet) was taken by someone and the singer is begging to take it back but on the way, she made some mistakes or cheated but in the end, he was mesmerized by her. He still continues to beg for the bracelet. In the song's inner form, he had something very important with him but along the way, he made some mistakes and lost it. Now he wants his thing back and begs the owner (either God or his spiritual master) to put him again to the right way he was. The first part was is Farsi and second part was in Urdu.

I think The bracelet here signifies the innocense of the soul, you come with it and lose it in time, now that the soul wants to reunite with god, its begging the world to give the innocence back. The world in this case has taken the bracelet and got you drunk on all the glamour and splendor

Pure Indian Classical Music is not about words. Words were introduced much later to make it easier to understand the context or feeling that the singer is trying to evoke. But even now the Ustads don't care if there are words its more for the audience. The notes are frequencies that evoke emotions the way they are delivered and that's what are the Ragas about. The Rhythm is a whole big word in the Indian classical music we say there is as much literature to the rhythm than to the whole of ragas together.

Hello kojak, I watching your vedios from severl monthes, but i didn,t write any comments on them, This is my first comment to write, This isn,t qawwaly or ghazal, but it is a masterpeace in coke studio history, It is tumry, the tumry is the begining of music, so it was a very intiant music, The poetry, nobody knowes, couz some layrics is taken from fercian languige and some from another languige i forgot the name, but almost 2,000 years ago farcian was the national languige of hindostan, before british roll, it is based on very classical music, just enjoy the skills of the singers, thanks for the reaction

You are right this song is more about the vocalist playing with their sounds rather instruments being center of attention. As for lyrics it depends on the interpretation of the person listening to song...that is what poetry is about. but there is mostly a back story in the folk lore to a sufi song. It has a unique rhythm with non symmetrical clapping at beats.

I know you have been reacting to Qawwalis but I think no one has told you about the vocal parts without the lyrics. These parts are known as "Sur" improvisation parts. Imagine them as the base of Indian classical singing. Just like you make a tune and learn singing with Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Da. It's similar, but in Indian classical singing, these are called the "Seven Surs" and are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Nee. Watch any Qawwali or Indian classical vocal piece; these parts will be only based on the seven surs. In Qawwali, these are used so much and are improvised to such a degree extensively that some Qawwalis can even go to 45 minutes and 1 hour, even in live performances. Hope this has helped a bit in understanding the vocals.

in Sufism, Normally, Lover (The Sufi Poet) genders himself as female and God (The Devine) as male. Bracelet is taken as symbol of engagement. The Poet here (being a female lover) is begging for Bracelet (declaration of engagement) from Beloved ( The Devine.

I just want to add a little context there is a love story between Sohni female and Mahiwal male. The love story is that she used to use a baked clay pot to swim across the river to go visit her lover one day, someone substituted the baked clay pot with an unbaked clay pot, and as she tried to swim across the river with it, it dissolved, and she died as well, so the reference to the clay pot refers to this particular love story. The clay pot often speaks to her, telling her I am unbaked I will dissolve you will die, but she insists that she promised her lover she would cross the river and come visit him so she goes anyways.

There is a book about Qawwali by Shemeem Burney Abbas “The Female Voice in Sufi Rituals.” Men often assume the female voice in this tradition. Mystical poetry is not literal. One post I read a while back on another video suggested the bracelet represents the free will - not sure if that is true. Many of these songs are talking about their relationship with their spiritual master and spiritual surrender.

Some things I notced about sufi music (most of times) : 1. The soul is the female 2. God is either the father' or the lover , depending on if there is a third person referenced. IF there is no third person God is the Male Lover, if there is then god is the father 3. The third person is always the corrupting influence on the soul, Mostly it references to the World

At surface level it describes story of Krishna and Radha and at much higher level it talks about the relationship of Man with God. *Here's the sufistic explanation * At much higher level this describes state of man when he or she becomes closer to his Lord of the Universe. A soul is requesting his Lord to return his most precious gift (Kangana) - Free Will. None of the creature except human on earth is endowed with this ability. This gift of volitional right or wrong is snatched away by God when man realizes the nearness to God. In early phase of man's life, man remains ignorant of God, he faces the consequences of his own wrongdoing and give excuse of fate. And if he ever achieves success he says that it is my own doing. Instead of putting faith on God he puts faith on himself or on Natural forces or makes his own hypothesis that life has no meaning. If at any point in time by chance it occurs to him that probably God is an answer of this life, he brushes it off saying I just "slipped off" in my understanding. Man is truly deceitful - larzish-e- bahaana saaz. In midlife, man starts facing ups and down (lapak-jhapak) and suddenly he realizes that he is helpless and transcends into reality (aan achhanak madwaa pilaaye)... He/She realizes that Man does not control his own destiny... All he does is the attempt to increase likelihood of desired results...but end is in the hand of the Almighty, sooner or later he realizes God - scattered symbols all around of him/her - 'aan achaanak rang daalo, madwaa pilaao'. Man in the trance of experiencing the presence of Almighty (gulaal rang nahaaye) he is willing to give heart or life (Jaan daademo, Dil Daademo) not able to dissociate himself now from the feeling God. He feels that as if his Free Will (Kangna) is snatched....after experiencing the truth...man is not able to do what he wants....now he cannot speak lie even if he could....He wouldn't harm anyone even if he had the ability...He cannot talk bad about anyone when he could...He wouldn't hurt anyone....His freedom of doing anything - precious Kangna got snatched....He can do now anything but what is his true self is....He is bound to follow the right path.... still a beautiful explanation. Free will is always limited, whatever you believe in and this song it is the Almighty.

cultural things dude, you can't know if you do not know the culture. Ask Indians or Pakistanis, they will know what is it about.
