The flags are bugles, carried by the senior staff and commanders of the units that make up the band. Always 12 members n the bugle tank. The band is the only college or military band in the United States that lives together, eats the same time, does formations twice a day,..... a very tight knit group, Comprised of two major band units formed from 6 company and battery sized units in the Corps of Cadets, hence the official name, The Combined Band at Texas A&M. It was formed in 1894 and lives on the military Quad on campus. It has no distinctive uniform, marching in the uniform of the day for the Corps of Cadets. The A&M used to mean “ Agricultural and Mechanical,” however when conferred University status in 1963, the school was forced to divert itself of the “Agricultural and Mechanical.” The A&M now is a symbol recognizing the College from which it was formed, but officially has no meaning. About half the band will pursue commissions in the military. This drill is normally the last drill at home for each year. Unlike most bands in the US, music majors are rare, and the drum majors are elected by the band just before the end of the previous year. The boots and uniforms are from the 1931 US Army uniform, parts of which the US Army just readopted in 2019 as their official uniform, but which the Corps of Cadets has worn continuously since 1931. Watch the Aggie band drill 1991 vs Arkansas. Poor video quality, but one of the bands finest performances on film

Most college bands put together one show and work all year to perfect it. The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band does a different show each week.

Do they use the same drill and change music or do they change everything?

@@DennisJohnsonDrummer Actually they mostly play the same military march music over and over year to year with few exceptions. It’s the formations and drills that are different for each game.

Yes, every Monday morning in the fall they start a new drill. The Bugle Rank never gets a day off because they have to learn their parts on Sunday afternoon. The core marching music is the same year after year: 1.the Aggie War Hymn; 2. Noble Men of Kyle; 3. Ballad of the Green Berets; 4. Patton; 5. Strategic Air Command March. But there are other familiar (but not regular songs) that are incorporated into the drills every year. And a handful of new songs (5 or less). But the core songs are what make the Aggie Band so identifiable over the decades (and upholds the Aggie “traditions.”)
@daejeon0607

The drills are basic in September and get progressively more complex into the fall semester. Usually the most complex drills are performed at bowl games or the University of Texas game, traditionally on Thanksgiving Day, which is no longer played (sad).

Not true of any college band I’m familiar with. Most if not all produce a different routine for every home game, often a new pre-game routine, too.

Notice some of them wear high boots while the rest wear regular shoes. The boots are the seniors (fourth year students) the rest are the underclassmen. They actually get the boots in their first year and polish them for three years before they're allowed to wear them. Also, the freshmen (first years) have metal taps on the heels on their shoes so the upperclassmen can hear them coming to give them a hard time.

It is called the Bugle Rank. The whole band follows them. They are the ones who do the most practice to prepare the drills. I was in the Aggie Band, Class of 1999.

ATM = Texas A&M. Originally it was Texas Agriculture and Mechanical College, later in 1963 it became Texas A&M University with the A and the M as a nod to the past, but no longer officially representing Agriculture and Mechanical. A&M is way more diverse than just Ag and Mechanical.

Exactly. Back in the day the other state school, University of Texas, was primarily liberal arts. Same thing in Virginia; University of Virginia was liberal arts and Virginia Tech was engineering.

Such a traditional band but mesmerizing because of the precision. Some of the high school bands in Texas march this style also. I think they call it "military style" as opposed to "corps style". The bands compete with bands using a similar style when they go to contests. Love to see this. Thanks for posting.

Your reactions are a pure joy to watch. I was in a military high school marching band. When they march into each other like that it's a matter of spacing between people. We did this in high school band (no where NEAR the level of the Aggie band). It gives an awesome visual effect... So glad you enjoy our marching bands. Americans love our football and our marching bands (high school & college).

One of the greatest memories I have with my father-inlaw is ... he owned a hockey team of players over 60-years old. His team was to compete against a similar team during the intermission of an NHL game between the Vancouver Canucks and I can't remember who. I carried in the hockey bags of several players and children lined the sidelines asking for autographs. Of course I was a no-body as far as hockey goes but in business economics ... lol ... I rock

As they go through the middle of the four way cross most of the band members actually have to stop playing and remove the instruments from their mouths. Otherwise, they can get hit in the mouth and hurt themselves. They play up to the cross and resume playing afterwards. You'll notice that the set up for the four way cross pulls equal parts of the band into four parts. That way all instruments are represented in each quarter section, so any disruption in sound isn't noticed. The intricate routine they perform immediately after the cross puts all four sections back into their original places in block band formation.

GIG EM' AGGIES!!!!! WHOOOOOOP 94' It is a Marching Band that performs using military drill- Those kids stay up all night and wake up earlier than we did as Marine Corps Cadets- we called them BQ's or Band Queers as disrespect- but even then I knew they were the keepers of the spirit and I am so proud of what they represent. So many went on to serve and die in wars, so many of us live and get to remember....... H-1 Raiders USMC

You should watch the University of Texas at Austin’s marching band (also known as Texas or the Longhorn Band)! They are about the same size as A&M’s band but we have iconic “cowboy” like uniforms! We have our cool gimmicks and our fans show the tradition at our school! Watching the Longhorn band is an amazing experience to me (I am actually in my second year in the Longhorn band as of now)! Again I’d highly recommend watching them! 🧡
