The World Hockey League was a separate league to the NHL. It operated from 1972 to 79. Four of the WHL teams joined the NHL when the NHL absorbed the WHL. The Indianapolis Pacers was not one of them. 3:02 Of those four, the Oilers are the only team still in the same city with the same name. 3:16 HART TROPHY = MVP 3:25 ART ROSS TROPHY = most points in a season 6:29 CAMPBELL CUP = Western Conference Championship (Eastern Champions vs Western Champions for the Stanley Cup) 8:37 Wayne is the oldest of 5 kids. His parents bought their house when Wayne was a baby. And one of the reasons his dad chose that particular house was because it had a flat backyard so that he could build a backyard hockey rink. Wayne was on that rink every day running drills and practicing His dad created a lot of really good and creative drills.

The Hart Trophy is awarded to 'the player judged most valuable to his team.' The Art Ross Trophy is awarded to the player with the most points at the end of the regular season. The original Stanley Cup is actually still part of the present Stanley Cup. It is the small cup at the top, the part the winners of the cup fill with beer or champagne to drink out of the Stanley Cup.

Gretzky got the nick name "the great one" when he was just 10 year old when he scored 400 goals that year as a defensemen.

He’s the greatest player to step on ice and it’s not close. He is Canadian royalty and it’s unmeasurable the impact he had on the growth of Hockey across the world, he was the NHL’s version of Micheal Jordan

@@btll1819 No. Orr has 1.393 PPG, 4th all-time. Next highest defensemen are Paul Coffey, 29th at 1.087 PPG; Denis Potvin, 59th at 0.993 PPG; and Ray Bourque, 67th at 0.980. Orr revolutionized his sport more than anyone else, except for Babe Ruth. Excluding brief comeback attempts, Orr's career was over at age 27. Also, before Orr there were no elite players from New England and few indoor rinks; now there are hundreds of both.

Bro there are NHL superstars and whole freaking franchises that would never even have been in the league if Gretzky didn’t play hockey. Him moving to the US was huge for the expansion of the sport as a whole.

As a kid living in Winnipeg in the 1970s I went to quite a few WHA games and watched a Jets game on tv vs Indianapolis when Wayne was a Racer. One of my favourite memories was being 9 years old and going to the Jets (led by Bobby "The Golden Jet" Hull) last game vs Edmonton and Wayne in 1979 and winning the AVCO Cup for the third and last time before both teams were absorbed into the NHL along with the New England (Hartford) Whalers and Quebec Nordiques. Bobby Hull and Wayne Gretzky have always been my favouite players, tied at #1.

Bobby is in the HoF, first player to score 50 goals in a season. His slapshot was recorded at 118.3 mph before they started keeping those stats in the record books. He played 15 seasons with Chicago, 9 with the WHA Jets and 1 final NHL season with Hartford. His son is Brett Hull.

My father shot commercials of Wayne and stayed at his house in LA even, Wayne insisted my father direct the photography of his TV Commercials because my father was involved in the media aspect of the Oilers for years I lived within 10 minutes of Northlands colloseum and had access to lots of tickets , My Step mother produced the Oilers game show in Edmonton she was also very involved in those days on the media side of the team, I saw him play several times Wayne was always in the right place to get a pass from a team mate to score or to make a great pass to his team-mates.

Great reaction, Gretzky is my all time favourite player, I watched his entire career and yes I cried when he retired. The source of this Gretzky video is amazing, i would suggest reacting to Mario Lemiuex as well...if I were to ask someone who is the GOAT of hockey, I would accept Gretzky, Lemiuex and Orr as the answer.

It's a valid debate, Mario Lemieux was on Gretzky's level but plagued with injuries, Bobby Orr is that good but he was a defenseman, so his numbers couldn't go that high but Bobby Orr was is the best defensemen.

If Gretzky had retired after 10 years, like Orr did, this would have been his 10 year resume: * 9 Hart MVPs (in 10 seasons) * 16 scoring titles (7 regular season, 5 playoff, 3 Canada Cup, 1 World Championship) * 49 official NHL records * 4 Stanley Cups * 2 Canada Cups * All time leading scorer by age 28 Not even Orr has a 10 year resume like that. No one has in any sport.

Believe it or not.... there actually IS a legitimate debate about who Hockey's GOAT is... … I'm an old dog.. a grandfather... from Gretzky's neck of the woods... Great as he was ... the greatest player who ever lived (who's career was cut short by knee injuries...in terms of +/- worth more than one goal per game better than the opposition) was Bobby Orr...Imagine 5 Bobby Orr's (at Orr's peak) vs 5 Wayne Gretzky's... Team Orr wouldn't just beat Team Gretzky, they'd HUMILIATE THEM... ...ask the good people of Boston... they know...The people of Boston saw Ted Williams, Larry Bird, Bill Russell all play pro sports in their city... Yet ask them who, the greatest team sport athlete of all time was? They'll ALL SAY... ROBERT GORDON ORR
