In honor of the closing of Sig Sauer in Germany, I decided we needed to feature the most famous firearm to come from its factory, the SIG-Sauer P226. This one is a vintage West German-made model and really what started it all for the P226's reputation for quality and reliability. Go check out the video and remember to subscribe below.

Agree ....but early German mags made before 1989 have a shorter trim -to length on the mag spring and can jam fully loaded on first shot ...the 226R solved this problem and that enabled it to pass tests for SEAL adoption but the original lost to 92F in final tests because of this mag problem originally 1989

@@jameswoods1804 I've never owned a stamped sheet metal with a pin-in breech block you have to replace periodically German version, but I have owned 5 MK 25s (I own 2 now, both the Desert variants). I carry one of them as my EDC because despite it being heavier than my Glocks or HKs, it is more reliable than any other pistol I own or ever have owned, plus I'm far more accurate with it. Granted, I admit that I've never owned an old German P-series gun, but I'm still much happier having a milled, stainless steel 1-piece slide.

Great handgun. I was a police officer for 36 years. 19 years as a plainclothes investigator. I carried a Sig Sauer P228 during that time, the compact version of the 226. I still have that gun and it is my "go to" double stack for concealed carry. It has served me well since 1990.

@garyK.45ACP

@@whomagoose6897 Size is the same, weight is a little different...the P-229 is basically a modified P-228. By that, to mean, the P229 is also available in .40 S&W and .357 SIG, while the P228 was 9mm only. The P229 has a milled steel slide while the P228 is a "folded" steel slide. The P228 is lighter, the P229 is stronger to withstand .40 S&W and .357 SIG. The P228 is no longer made, but plenty are available on the used market. I bought my 9mm 226 when I started my LE career in 1989, and carried it on duty (and off) until I retired in 2011. I put thousands of rounds through it, almost exclusively 147gr. +P+ jhp loads. The very few malfunctions I ever had were either ammo or magazine related. The pistol itself NEVER experienced a malfunction or failure. I carried 1911a1's and Beretta M9's while in the service and was forced to carry a Glock 22 on duty for a short period of time. I once owned a Walther PPK and currently own a Walther PPQ-M1. The Sig 226 is by far my favorite of all of them, and still my EDC choice.

I carried a P226 for many years in LE. I started in departments that allowed you to carry anything you could qualify with. For the first couple of years I carried a variety of different makes and models. Once I settled on the Sig, first a P220 then a P226, that’s where I stayed. Accurate, reliable, and durable. I carried a 226 in patrol, and bought a 228 when I transitioned to investigations. A couple of slightly lower scoring quals later, I went back to the 226, from then on out.

I became obsessed with owning the SIG 226 as a kid after seeing Agent Mulder carrying one in “The X-Files.” As an adult, I have a somewhat more nuanced view: It has some faults (namely, the trigger bar springs that eat into the frame if used enough), but it’s fairly light and well-balanced for a metal-framed pistol.

@@philipcho8664 No problem man. So the biggest noticeable difference I noticed is that the factory mags have a dimple on the sides near the feed lips. That is to prevent the magazine from being over inserted, so as to prevent the breach face of the slide from ramming the feed lips. Which was apparently an issue with older non dimpled mags. For whatever reason, they retained that old design with the ACT mags. I'd assume that maybe the old non dimple mags are the examples they had to work with, so they just copied it, extended it slightly and gave it base plate to accommodate an extra round.

All the P-226's used for the IPDA competitions at the local gun club are stock pistols, which never jam. Just about every Glock has been modified in some way. The G-19 is mostly used. Neither pistol jams with failures to feed, fire or eject. If there are problems it's usually reloaded ammo. Or, some new guy thinks he can work on guns, but, can't. One guy did his own gunsmithing on a 1911. Had constant failures. Kept on saying he only needed more oil. The pistol was dripping all over the range stages. Once the sear started to "auto" fire he was DQ'ed. He came back to shoot a few times after a real gunsmith completely disassembled & reassembled the pistol. Just goes to show that just because you can rebuild a car transmission, you can work on a handgun.

I am keeping this weapon as an family heirloom so if the purists think it lost collector's value by the changes from the original specs , just remember that I did it for my own convenience as pistol is now enhanced to the level of the pistols being manufactured now. This pistol still sees use after almost 30 years and looks impeccable. I carried it with the INS as a personal option instead of a 357 Mag revolver back in the 1990's until the agency went to Beretta 96's in 1997 and made them mandatory. Never get rid of a German made P226, specially the ones marked "made in West Germany" which were made until 1996 when the P226 went to "made in Germany".

I am a freelance Public Policy Analyst/Legal Researcher. For 10+ years, the vast majority of my income has been made from being contracted by a law firm with sole practice of lobbying Government officials on public policy issues.... The law firm itself is "Right Of Center" and they work for & lobby on behalf of issues commonly seen as favorable to Republicans/Conservatives/Libertarians. Especially issues regarding 1st and 2nd Amendments... The reason I state that is because, according to what I've heard.... If I understood correctly.... Sig Sauer didn't close up shop in Germany because "they went out of business", per se.... But from my understanding, Sig Sauer made the decision to uproot Sig Sauer as a German GmbH, and move to USA to become a full fledged American Company. With decision partially done out of protest against more & more Leftist-Extremist anti gun policies plauging Germany and most all other European nations & anti-gun sentiment stirred by political left (both of which also leading sales in European Market to go from "crap" to "non existent"). ......Combined with the fact that they want to do everything possible to stay in good graces with US Fed Gov/DOD, after their modified P320 chosen as M17.... Not to mention the fact that civilian sales is 90%+ in USA... They saw writing on wall in Germany, recognized growing sense of "buy American" nationalism under Trump, and decided to embrace it as a new beginning

299R was the first handgun I bought, about 10 years ago. Was my first carry gun, and now I wish I had a full sized 226 for home defense. The 229R is just a fun-gun at this point but man is it so smooth and comfortable to shoot. Then again, so is the 92fs. Comparable in pleasure at the range.

My first and only 9mm handgun was a 1991 pre owned Sig P226 made in “West Germany”. Great gun. Spot on. It was just a little too bulky and top heavy for me so I traded it for a brand new commercial M9 Beretta which is also a great gun and spot on.

Thanks for the review, Larry! Still my favourite pistol, the SIG P 226 does all what a today's polymer pistol does, is almost as light through an alloy frame, but without being bulky! Like you mentioned, the Beretta 92 FS is the closest competitor to the P 226, next is S & W 59 family and not forget to mention the widely unknown Walther P 88, which had the fortune of simply entering the market too late and being a pricey gun, although being of excellent quality! So only a total of around 8000 were built, and anyone who has its hands on one will likely keep it! To me, all of these four examples are outstanding handguns, that were revolutionary back in the days!Be a polymere gun slightly lighter and therefore more comfortable to carry, alloy frame guns will be more controllable because of lower recoil, and SA triggering can be key to a precise shot!

Great review. I have a P229 40 S&W made in 2007 with frame stamped Made in Gemany. It is my go to pistal if shtf. I can hit volleyball size metal targets at 25 yd with good consistency. I stoke it with either 140g Barnes TAC-XP JHP solids or a Federal 135 JHP. A lighter bullet makes a big difference in carry weight and performance. Don't need the 165-180 heavy bullets unless its a special situation. Also installed a Lasermax. Love it and it stll performs as well as the day I bought it.

Favored in use with British SAS as the L105A1 and the L105A2 (P226R). It is issued with 20 round magazines on some missions but also issued with 15 round magazines. SAS has used P226 since around early 1990s and even late 1980s if I remember correctly when it replaced the Browning Hi Power (L9A1) 9x19mm.

The SIG Sauer P220 is my go to gun. It's the best SA/DA gun ever. The CZ 75 is a close second. The P220, P226 and P229 are better combat guns due to a larger slide that can be more easily manipulated in combat, smoother triggers and simpler controls.
