On 4th-5th May 1945, Germany signed the Unconditional Surrender and Collapsed on 8th of May. 4 months later Japan signs the Unconditional Surrender in 2nd September 1945.

I think it is a credit to Eisenhower as a leader in that he gave his chief of staff the honor of receiving the German surrender. Monty was also, given the honor of having a huge number of German troops surrendering to him, personally.

Only the wehrmacht surrendered that day, not the german government, nor the nazi party. The official government, lead by Karl Dönitz, was arrested by army soldiers in their HQ soon after.

I thought we Americans were the only ones butchering French place names. But lo, the Brits do it too. It's actually pronounced Rahnce with a slight nasal sound. Certainly not REEMS or as lots of we Yanks say Rhymes.
@ArizonaJoeHines3 жыл бұрын
So, do you pronounce "Paris" pah-ree when speaking English ? Probably not. Actually, the Brits have been butchering French place names for centuries longer than we have here in the US. The town of Ypres, a battleground of World War I, was called "Wipers" by the Brits. (I know that Ypres is in Belgium.) It's pronounced something more like "Eep."
