Wow, cannot imagine the amount of time, energy and resources went into not just this insane mortar but the entire journey from design to the field. Once again Germany had wonder weapons that cost so much to make but had such little effect on the outcome of the war.

Probably would have paid off had the war gone on longer and they could put the design lessons to use. But yes majority of these weapons were just to give a false sense of superiority.

@@jamesturner9651 roughly 2 tiger 2s by weight of steel alone. Germany had zero hope of out producing America and Russia. Their only option was better. And if you need a bunker deleted, this is pretty better.

Mortars have always fascinated me. When I went to Corregidor and saw the American ones placed to defend the island I just couldn’t wrap my head around how those were called actual mortars.

Yes I always end up staring at them in a trance-like state, particularly old naval or fort ones. My mind just doesn't seem to want to process how they flung those giant iron rounds.

I've been to visit the tank museum at Kubinka. The mythical piece of the place is the Maus, I was excited to see such legendary tank. The Maus is impressive BUT... it is placed just close to Karl Gerat ! I didn't know the existence of this gun at Kubinka, so masive and impressive, I was more impressed by Karl than Maus because the Maus looks like little toy in such place ! ^^

One shell is on open air display in army museum in Warsaw. It's really big, tho it's dwarfed by even bigger 800mm shell from Schwerer Gustav right next to it. Fun story - museum initialy had 3 shells, all recoved post war from rubble and ruins, but in 1955 someone discoved that two of them aren't actually disarmed, and are still full of explosive material :P , so autorities had to move them out of the city and dispose.

If you build models....you can appreciate its size. It akin to a tractor. 1/72 scale is nice. Rather tall. One still exists in a Russian museum. Aberdeen had one...but apparently scrapped it. Thor. Karl, Adam. We’re names of three. Mortar fire at more then 45 degrees...for a more up n down penetration. The equally Impressive SturmTiger fired a 380mm rocket at less then a 45 degree angle. Also used in Warsaw. A few built...a few saved. And the massive 75 ton Jadgetiger. Firing a 128mm armor penetration shell. A beast as well. All required special rail cars as few could handle 75 tons. All were slow. All were used up. Then abandoned. Often stripped for parts for others. Especially tracks. Albert Speer said.there were too many types of tank...to many types of ammunition.....to few in all.

Karl would have had massive impact breaching the Maginot line but someone decided that the Wehrmacht would just not care for the worlds most heavy fortificated defense position and just moves beside the fortification.

@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq Wow, good for you. I just completed school and finished fy final exams. I'm waiting for my points, in a week, to see in which universities I'm able to pass Here in Greece it's like: you made 16000 points for example and you can pass in those universities, in those that requires points until that number. There are universities that requires more points for example 18500 or 19400. It depends on what points you will gather from the final exams. So we all try to give our best. After that, you have to fill a paper with the universities you want and pass it to the Ministry, so they can file you and have you ready to tell you in which of those who selected chose you. Then you pick the one you want. After that vacations XD Sorry for the long text. I didn't know how else I can explain that.
