More like the Russians, doesn't matter if it were the Soviets at the time, Napoleon also tried to invade Russia and failed, no country managed to conquer imperial Russia, the Soviets failed in Afghanistan, they had mass conscription and strict discipline, soldiers that retreated were killed in WWII, their losses were the greatest of any combatent country. They were helped by the Nazis' diversion of troops as well. Regime was still atrocious.

After early victories, Hitler who relied on intuition started stalling. The bad weather and Russian experience finally caught up. An effective army needs to empower its junior officers and soldiers to take initiative and use creativity in chaotic situations. Ironically, at the beginning of the war, the German soldiers were empowered and the Russians lacked initiative, but by the end, this situation was reversed.

My grandfather was Austrian and forced into the German army as they did with many Austrian men, whether they supported Hitler or not. My family never saw my grandfather again after he was taken away with the German army. Robert Ungar Wieringer simply vanished from this earth during WW2. It haunted my mother until she died that we could never find any information on what happened to him.

Operation Bagration the biggest German defeat, the second being the second battle of France the third being Stalingrad. Bagration and France happened at the same time though. You could argue, however, that the biggest defeat was the final capitulation and also that the failure of Barbarossa in 1941 to knock out Russia meant that the war was then almost unwinable.

@@KaiserAvG the Kursk Bulge or Operation Citadel wasn’t a defeat as such the Germans probably killed more Russians and destroyed more of their equipment than the Russians did on Germans but it knocked out both armies offensive abilities for a while and the Russians by this time had a far bigger industry so they recovered quicker. Bagration was a far bigger defeat than Stalingrad the Russians destroyed the German army facing them.

Operation Bagration did not solve anything, since it was thanks to Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk that it was possible to form an anti-Hitler coalition, because if the Germans had won in Stalingrad or near Prokhorovka, would the allies have been able to refrain from a separate peace with Hitler?

@@HedserWijbenga It was Nazi policy which stated that all food should be confiscated from the people and exported to the German Reich and under General Plan A, the Nazi high command predicted at a minimum 20 million Soviet people would be starved by their plan. Obviously the Soviet Communist leadership under Stalin was brutal and filled with murder & starvation, but at least under Stalin the Soviet people had a much better chance of surviving where as under the Nazis, the people of Eastern Europe where regarded as "subhuman" and where therefore marked for forced labor or where to be marked for starvation. By the way, I'm not a Stalin apologist, as I believe both Stalin, Hitler, & Mao were some of the most evil men in all of history. At the end of the day the Nazi army were the bad guys while the Red Army were the good guys who liberated a vast majority of Europe including most of the concentration camps. That's a fact!!!!!!!!

Frankly speaking, both the Moscow citizens and the German POWs show admirable behavior. The former are remarkably restrained, nobody is seen abusing or cursing savagely, although one can imagine how angry they are inside. The latter, though defeated and dejected, march on in a disciplined and dignified manner, as is expected of soldiers irrespective of their race or political belief.

my german wife's uncle was captured in 1943, he did not return to Germany until 1955 a broken man. For many Americans,like my dad, WWII was fun, travel, getting away from his parents, and especially in France not facing the racism he faced at home, but for so many in Europe it was such a tragedy. My wife tells me of her family all males had died either in WWI or died or imprisoned still after WWII, educated, middle class only women left, going to the forests to gather acorns to eat and try to make flower out of.

We were(and are) not a barbarians. We have a police and all of those POW transportation rarely had an incidents with locals. Moreover - at the end of the war, USSR POW camps had at least basic food and medical supplies so it didnt mean death like in 1942(when the whole country was starving and POWs had a minimal food). People were busy to survive in a ruined country rather than attack German POW who were guarded by the police.

If anything, I would say they, and not the Russians, were the barbarians. I'm from Italy but from the Alps near France where the war 1943-45 was terrible. The Nazis for revenge against Italy (which had nothing to do with the feeling of most people, we had partisans and even Russian partisans with us along with English etc. and for that matter, even a few few Germans who got sick of the war they'd been dragged into. And brigades of every political party). And the hatred the civilians in my area had against the Nazis and (at that moment) German army, was very hard. I love Russia and its culture as my favourite! There were no anarchy on Soviet controlled territory.Moreover it was a martial law and any kind of disobeyence could end very bad.People could be easily fined just because being late on work.People worked 12 hour shifts to reconstruct the country/supply the front. The discipline was good. So if the police say not to attack the POWs - theywont be atacked. Also keep in mind Moscow was never occupied and had pretty minor damage because it was near the frontline only in late 1941. Three years later it became almost the same safe city as it was before the war because the front was driven 1000s km away. Some kind of anarchy could be in Belarus because of widespread partisan movement and horrific German policy there but it was quickly back to order because the regular troops maintained it and partisans were incorporated into police.

My grandfather was captured with the 6th army at Stalingrad, he was in the 44th infantry division. He lost 80 pounds during captivity and many deaths occured in his pow camp of malnutrition in complete disregard of the Geneva convention. He became one of the few survivors to finally return to Germany in the mid 1950s where he ultimately lived a long peaceful life The Russians underestimated his strength.

The bad part about this is that this is why so many millions of brave russian solidrs that fought the germans into western europe were arrested and put into gulags. And as for scary Siberia: most of the POWs either repaired roads in the cities they destroyed or worked in the fields. In my hometown of Petrosawodsk german POWs have built very good roads, paved ways, that were in perfect shape until middle of 90s.

@Nastasiya Russians are largely clueless about what led up to the war. Hitler and Stalin were both invading and occupying neighboring countries, they were the same, they should have suffered the same fate. And not many Germans seem to act like victims, most are overly remorseful, to a point that it’s unhealthy.

The German prisoners who fell into the hands of the Western allies were tried in courts in Nuremberg to determine their degree of guilt and see if they should pay heavy penalties or not, instead the vast majority of Germans who were prisoners on the eastern front were taken to forced labor camps in Siberia where they died, very few would return to Germany. There were cases of German prisoners who were shown to have helped Jews and therefore Western authorities and even Israel requested their release and Stalin did not want to release them, this is the case of the second rank who helped save "the pianist" Spilman, from which it was made a very blockbuster movie.
