Fun? Probably the most stupid game of chess I've ever seen. At least the kid had the the intelligence to offer a draw. The old goat would have stayed there all night doing the same shit repeatedly.

I was REALLY hoping @ 4:34 German would offer a bishop sacrifice by taking the H7 pawn>check. His opponent would have been at a huge disadvantage if he took the bishop with the king.

@@rokualvin6428 and I think it's not a great form to assign fixed labels like "having talent" to children. It's not like the skills of a young child are an unmovable attribute.
@rokualvin6428
@rokualvin6428 Ай бұрын
@@heikkianttila6296 I think applying statements like "not having talent" is counterproductive. Encouraging children is good, painting them with negative labels is bad. Talent is real and we are all good at some things and not so good at others. One thing I worry about is putting children under the microscope of KZbin videos. The microscope of movies and TV celebrity status has destroyed the lives of many children. Children are as you point out, malleable. A negative comment from a parent can stay with them for the rest of their life. A positive comment might encourage them to rise to higher levels. Kids don't come with a users manual. My two sons sit on either side of being 50 years old, and I often look back at my parenting skills, wondering how I could have done better. Children are the future, and as such whatever makes them better, will improve what will one day exist in society. Sorting out what is really best for the children is a huge challenge.

@rokualvin6428 there are lots of evidence that celebrating inherent talent vs effort and acquired skill is problematic for people. Let's say a person mentally ties successful outcomes to aptitude they were "born with". When they face failure or big challenges the mentality can be that this is where my talent ends. "I guess I am not smart/fast/strong enough." Where as if the focus is on efforts a person tends to have much more resilient relation to challenges and don't connect failures to their persona but to the action - which is not set in stone. Of course some have better natural ability or learn something faster or easier. But using this kind of labels and comparisons - or microscopic analysis like you mention - is not very fair in my opinion. Lot of truly great things have been achieved by people who had to work longer or harder to get to a certain level.
@rokualvin6428
@rokualvin6428 Ай бұрын
@@heikkianttila6296 It isn’t one or the other. Even if no one tells you that you are smart or have talent, you will know that when you apply yourself to some task. School comes easy and you don’t have to work as hard as others to be at the top of the class. I know from personal experience that can cause problems because you get lazy. What is best is to acknowledge your talents while at the same time being driven to hard work. (Setting goals that make you work can be helpful here.) It is like being a professional athlete. They all have talent and they were told they had talent all of their lives almost certainty. But no professional athlete can attain much success at the professional level without practicing all the time. Even when reaching a high level of success practice is required to avoid losing your edge. If a task or skill is sufficiently challenging, the highest levels of achievement will not be attained without real talent for it. Even when someone attains success, there is still stratification among the small group of those who are successful. Among elite athletes some are still better than others, even given equal amounts of hard work that they all did. That which makes some better is talent. Of course even talent must be polished and worked. And hard work pays off even when talent is less. Due to lack of talent, we can’t all be profession athletes, but we can still enjoy playing sports. Talent cannot be hidden, once someone seriously takes on the task of mastering a skill. Equal amounts of hard work between people with different amounts of talent will produce drastically different results. Naturally, just because it doesn’t come easy doesn’t mean you cannot reach a level of competency. However, it almost certainly means you will never be the best at it. Someone like Elon Musk works incredibly hard, but he would not be where he is even so without talent. It takes both talent and hard work to reach the top. The rest of us have to settle for something less than being the best. Wherever we end up, we will be there because of a combination of talent and hard work, in whatever doses we can bring to the undertaking. So, I would agree with you that merely pushing the idea that a child has talent and that is enough is going to cause problems. Best is to acknowledge obvious talent while at the same time encouraging hard work as being absolutely necessary. And if a child lacks obvious talent of course you don’t point that out, or suggest that is a hard stop limit. You instead focus on the hard work aspect and all along the way you encourage and praise whatever accomplishments are achieved. Parenting and teaching children is a daunting task. But it is a rewarding one.
