The Scandinavians and other Germanic tribes all worshipped the same gods. The norse religion is something we associate with the vikings but really, all the germanic peoples in Europe practiced this religion.

I grew up in a Christian household, but I never felt connected to that religion. My mother's maiden name is Frank and I always knew we came from Germany. But after taking a 23 and Me test, I learned we specifically came from North Rhine-Westphalia. Since then, I've been learning everything I can about the germanic tribes and religion. So fascinating! Thank you so much for the informative video!

He was known as the "Sachsenschlächter" meaning the slaughterer of Saxons, as he invited them to unarmed peace talks, where he betrayed them and killed the defenseless Saxons. Of course, they try to avoid these facts in official history lessons. I didn't learn about that in German school, where Charlemagne was portrayed as the visionary true founder of Europe.

"Our own treacherous Kings...". Seems some things never change. As relevant today as it was back then. ;) On another note, and if I may be so bold, might I suggest that you acquire a desk lamp or two (the shrouded type like the animated one shown at the beginning of Pixar's animated movies) and try placing them out of frame but directed at the wall above and in front of you (assuming the wall is white/off white). This will result in a soft, even fill light for your face. Currently you are heavily backlit (silhouetted) which is a shame, given that you come across as a confident and articulate speaker. Some experimentation may be required but It would be a cheap and easy way to raise the production value of your channel. Just a tip from an ex-pro photographer...

The name Easter is a us due to the use of Eostre. The tall blonde fishnet wearing goddess. Her totems were the raven and the rabbit. You cam see the wood work in the ancient church with their seatings (pews ). The goddess is usually depicting extending the large red apple. Also I think from her the "easter" egg was a fertility gift encouraging young couples to have children.

That's interesting to hear. In German Easter is called ''Ostern'' which is (as far as I know) directly derived from the Germanic Goddess Ostara. Ostara is the Goddess of spring and her symbols actually do include an egg (for fertility) and a rabbit (to be precise it's a 'moon rabbit').

In Ancient Sumer she was also known as Inanna, but the most common thought is that Ishtar is the Akkadian counterpart of the West Semitic goddess Astarte, yet if you look closely at the pronunciation, Eostre, Ostara, Ishtar', Astra, Astardu, Astarte. they even sound alike, as in reference with the goddess of the night from egypt: Nut, in Old norse: Nótt or Nat (Both meaning: Night) and Nótt is spoken almost exactly the same way as Nut

Any scholar worth anything knows that Germanic peoples passed on these tales orally throughout time. The story of the Volsungs takes place in many continental European settings. This is also why there is the very similar story of the Nibelungenlied written later in the medieval period in what is now modern day Germany.

I guess, I have it in my soul. I growed up in a small village sorounded by wood. As a little child I looked out of the window and noticed a special tree. I told my brother: This is a magic tree. We must go there. We found a little spring at its roots. And I put little playing figures around its roots to admire tree and spring. I did it instinctively, nobody had ever told me to do such things, and we never talked about that to any adult. I just felt it and did it. I guess old knowledge coming out of my children's soul.

3:00 talking of a good chunk of people practicing 'paganism' privately etc after being Christianised / force converted... I went to Central America in 2008... I'd say that in some of the Mayan areas like Guatemala, especially in villages etc, Christianity would be barely recognisable to most European Christians.. In fact, I went into one church and they had a load of smoke and leaves all over the ground and they were sacrificing a chicken... I also read that for most of Mayan history, they converted secretly, the statues of Mary and Jesus into ones of their own Gods in their heads at least... often burying pagan statues etc under those Christian statues and secretly worshipping their own Gods in front of Christian priests. This lasted centuries not just a few years...

It's funny how you say that the German pagan religion never really died out. My catholic cousin once asked my grandfather what the family religion was and he said we are not catholic, Lutheran or any other Christian religion. He said his grandfather was more pagan than anything else. He said that his grandfather gave tribute to ancestors and the forces of nature. The Angles came from souther Jutland in Denmark, and the Saxons were from Sachsen (now called Nieder-Sachsen) in Germany, Some of the weekdays in English are named after the old gods. Tuesday after Tyr (Tisdag in Swedish), Thursday after Thor (Torsdag in Swedish), and Friday after Frigg or Freja (Fredag in Swedish). Wednesday is a bit off from the Swedish name (Onsdag in Swedish after Odins dag), but when you know the German name fro Odin, which was Wodan, the you can see that Wednesday is from Wodan's day.

The lower saxons are actually Widukind's tribe so the link has some feasibility. Lower Saxony is the actual saxon tribe, today's federal country of Saxony and its predecessor state are actually predominantly slavs of the pommeranians and wenden who were conquered and christianized by the saxons under otto the great and his father and sons. Eventually the main line died out in saxony in the male line and hence the Kurfürsten (prince elect title, the biggest german lords that got to elect the emperor) title and honours as well as the title of the lord of the saxons went to the surviving subbranch in their former eastern province which became therefore known as Saxons and Saxony. Heraldically you can always tell historic saxon areas by the use of the saxon steed (white steed on red background)

Yep and the only reason he pushed Christianity that strong is that his family of the Karolinger were the Hausmeier (huskarl) of the Merowinger dynasty. The Merowinger had the Germanic king's Heil which means that by Germanic pagan religion and cultural norms the Karolingians could not usurp the weaker Merowinger. When they eventually did anyway they did it with the backing of the pope and hence were forced to put the foundation of their kingship on the new religion of Christianity (king by God's grace) and actively fight the old pagan one that was at the time still dominant amongst the normal folk as it directly challenged and deligitimized their rule - hence remaining pagan suddenly turned from a personal decision to a political one for the free men amongst the Franks and the tribes living under their rule

Did anyone really try and Christianize Scandinavia by force? other than our own kings and nobles that is. You talk as if the Franks tried to invade and got rebuffed, which as far as I know is not the case. They probably made a bunch of threats though. Christianity got into Scandinavia by way of the Danish sort-of-king Harald Klak who let the missionary Ansgar preach and build churches from around 826 CE - Harald of course wanted to be a real king and was hoping that by allowing this the Franks would support his bid for power - it didn't work out for Harald who had to flee the country (again!), but it worked very well for Ansgar. He later became the first Archbishop of the North with a seat in Hamburg and got the epithet Apostle of the North. There weren't that many Christians in Scandinavia yet, and many would continue to worship the old gods along with Christianity, since pagans have no problem worshipping multiple gods. Christianity was present though, and accepted for the most part. The Franks/HRE would continue to diplomatically and economically pressure the Danish kings to convert, so in 965 Harald Bluetooth eventually did. By that time Christians and pagans had lived side by side in Denmark for over 100 years.

It’s somewhat ironic that my Iberian pagan ancestors (the highland tribes of the Astures) were not fully Christianized until they were subjugated by the (Arian Christian) Visigoths - following their expulsion of the Vandals and annexation of the Suebic Kingdom (also Arian Christian, but its sovereigns respected the customs, traditions and autonomous ways of the frontier highland tribes).

Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Thracians, Dacians, Lombards, Etruscans, etc. These are all names of peoples from ancient times or before, who have disappeared. There are dozens of fictional peoples with the aim of hiding the origins of the natives of Europe. They are half-brothers, Germans, Spaniards, Italians, French, Scandinavians and others. Many modern states did not even exist until the 18th or 19th century, and the Italian language was made official in 1989, in the Italian parliament, although there are parts of Italy where people do not understand each other linguistically. There is a claim that in modern European languages originated administratively in the last few centuries.

Yes, and I've found that church accounts like the writings of Martin of Braga are very useful in showing just how long our traditions survived (and how much it was a headache for the Church and State). My father was originally from Southwest Germany (Swabia), but through one set of my great-grandparents I also have Iberian roots (Gallego and Castilla y Leon)! So that same mix of Suebi and Celt as occurred in Swabia. Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria - the most Celtic regions - preserved traditions far longer and still so many folk traditions clearly pre-Christian even if outwardly "folk Catholic".

Obviously traditions remain and are repurposed fur the new religion. It doesn't mean the people continue to believe in the deities and myths originally associate with those traditions. Belief is a funny thing. The Romans became Christians and exchanged their shrines to their ancestors for shrines to saints. The English are partly Danish, yes, but the word English comes from the Angles, a west Germanic tribe. The Angles spoke Anglish or English. So they were quite Germanic and from a region of what is now southern Denmark but was not Danish at the time. When they moved out and over to Britain the North Germanic tribes moved in. You're factually wrong about the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Frisians (Anglo-Saxons) not mixing with the local Romano-Celtic people. Modern DNA studies price they did significantly. Charlemagne may have been Christian, but he was a Frank. He was Germanic.

Its refreshing to see a history-tuber who doesn't worship at the altar of Rome. After a DNA test, I am proud to say I have no imperial blood [Iberian, Italic or Hellenic] only the derided "barbarians" who refused to bow to the Eagles. What is your opinion of, to me, the biggest villain in Antiquity: Constantine? I call him villain [both in the modern, "bad guy", and classical "idiot" sense] due to appointing [or at least setting in motion the gateway for it to happen] Christianity as the official Imperial Cult. Prior to his garum-induced fever dream, Rome, while absolutely warring with the Germanic tribes, was more tolerant of local cultures and more or less let natives be that paid taxes and contributed to the legions. After Constantine, a Christian Empire could not accept non-christians as human, let alone potential citizens. This is why Rome fell in the west, they tried to convince non-Romans that their gods were the Devil in disguise, as opposed to the previous way of accepting similar cults like Odin/Jupiter/Zeus as the same god manifesting to people in different ways [Thoth-Hermes is a good example] or just accepting foreign gods as legit [like the Isis mystery cults]. To Christian apologists who disagree: your precious Rome lasted 800+ years before Constantine, and fell less than 200 years later. Some of the bloodiest wars in Europe [the Crusades, Reconquista, and 30 years' war to name a few], and the darkest period in human history, the Atlantic slave trade & Colonization, were justified with the Bible.

From what I’m gathering is that the pagan Gods (even the Christian line up) came from the original Indo-European Gods and through thousands of years and migration, became all of the different variations. I find Norse Mythology the most fascinating being of Scandinavian and Celtic origin. I don’t believe in the Christian God, Thor, Zeus etc. as being actual Gods however I do believe in the spiritual realm. I see all of pagans having the best grasp on the true “Gods” in the spiritual aspect of all humanity. I completely believe in Reincarnation. I love this channel. I watch it daily.

Great video! Christianization of my Suebi/Alemanni people took hundreds of years of a "syncretic" period where the Christians (through the Frankish occupiers) sent foreign missionaries to slowly erode our traditions, Christianizing them one part at a time but it was slow exactly because we held on to it longer than the Establishment historians would have us believe. Mostly in the 8th and 9th centuries were we fully Christianized - and even then its easy, especially what I know from the Catholic region of my ancestors (Ostalbkreis), to identify what is "Christian" as actually Heathen. The sacredness of springs and trees, and people continuing to go to them; the Maibaum; the various poles that were representations of the World Tree (much like the Saxons' Irminsul); Fastnacht traditions; folklore about Wodan, Holle and the Wild Hunt; the little wooden shrines throughout the countryside that were often visited more than churches, etc.. Much can be said of what survived among peoples in the Subconscious, like how we just seem to take to our landscape and our forests. The Heathen soul still resonates within a people long after they are officially converted.

Heya! Greetings from a German region called Odenwald*. As you´ve said at the end of your video some of the tales were much older and had a common source I might have some info you likely haven´t heard about. Regarding the Sigurd´s saga we have three places that claim to be the one where Sigurd was slain. We also have a folk tale about the place where Weyland/Wieland had his smithy. To top that off a lot of people here (myself included)** have a strong signal in their DNA from a certain region in Sweden (Gävleborg) which genetic distance seems to relate to the Viking age. No one really really understands how this could´ve happened or can make anything out of this, of course. *** But no one can be sure and as I state in my second footnote it seems people didn´t really care at all back then. *If the name is related to the god is debatable though. One of the earliest descriptions called it Othenwald which doesn´t make the things any clearer. I follow the general consensus that the name derives from the Celtic derived "Itter" meaning water. However, one can´t be sure. ** In fact that was a rather surprising und unexpected find. I wouldn´t have expected that. But my genetic makeup is weird anyway (including, of course a strong German part, a strong Scottish component, which is as obscure as the Swedish one, also Italian, Spanish, Hungarian, Ukranian and Circassian stuff - besides some other rather interesting DNA). Seems to me that my ancestors didn´t care much for race and similar nonsense. *** One guy of our ancestry project even claims he can pinpoint the Norse ancestry here to the warband of Hrorik of Dorestad - but even he has to admit that no one can be sure. Having seen the data I´ve got to admit he might have found at least something.
