It's not the case with Russian. The only foreigners average Russian citizen sees every day are from post-Soviet states like Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan etc. Imitating their accents can be considered racist because Russia has very serious problems with migrants (in 2022 there was 12,78 millions official migrant workers). If you want to know more, there is the Wiki article about working migrants in Russia, although it is only available in Russian: ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Трудовые_мигранты_в_России Accents of Caucasus region and Southern countries don't fit either since imitating them is also could be seen as mockering due to past (and current) violence and terrorism problems (e.g. Second Chechen War). Accent of Mongolic languages from regions like Buryatia doesn't really work with Russian to create a comedic effect, and many of these people can speak Russian without accent anyway. People from Slavic countries like Ukraine and Belarus also can speak Russian without accent. And Ukrainian accent was mostly a part of racist anecdotes long before the war. So, there is only one way: use Russian regional accents. The problem is… they either too subtle to make a difference (and often the only difference is the lexicon, not a pronunciation) or would sound strange, like Vologda accent. But maybe the dubbers could have used some regional accent with significant pronunciation changes from average Russian since this speech of Wheatley is a very small part of the game

There are some quirks in the Spanish dub of Portal 2: - Similar to the German dub, there seems to have been an error with the Oracle Turrent lines, but instead of using the english voice clips they use all the generic Turrent phrases (even though the subtitles display the correct dialogue) - Cave's "life give you lemons" phrase was changed to "to bad weather, good face" which works better idiomatically but really breaks the whole "combustible lemon" rant later on, instead saying he's going to "burn the forecast map" and make "isobar-based fuel" (which makes no sense) - None of the Perpetual Test Innitiative lines were dubbed - Wheatley is voiced by the same actor as TF2 Spy, which is a big coincidence when you remember the Ap-Sap! (sadly, undubbed), and Cave Johnson is the Medic and the Heavy - Both GLaDOS and Cave's VAs do reprise their roles in LEGO Dimensions and Cyberpunk, but not Wheatley

If I had to guess, the reason the "blood" in the German version of Portal is gray and not just removed in the Orange Box version is because Portal 1 shares quite a fair bit of Half-Life 2's assets. You can especially see this if you go into the developer console, enable sv_cheats, and type "impulse 101", you'll gain all of the weapons Gordon Freeman has access to in HL2. The shotgun, revolver, crowbar, and even the gravity gun. This is also why the turrets in Portal have nearly the same AI as they do in Half-Life 2's Nova Prospekt, only the ones in Portal die for good once they shut down.

Gonna rank the cast right quick. GlaDOS/Caroline: A - A solid substitute for Ellen, however, to me, it feels like a translation more than a localization. Wheatley: B - Not as stellar as Stephen, but I do get something out of the Swiss accent that actually got a chuckle out of me. Cave Johnson: S - Being a disembodied voice, it's nice that the team working on the translation got to stretch their legs a little and do something different with Cave. I'd even give merit for it being an unintended effect of rewriting lines. Turrets: C - Perfection it may be, but somehow I feel like a new game would have meant new opportunity. Especially with the Prometheus dialogue. Announcer/Emergency AI/Defective Turrets: C - I haven't played Portal 2 in a long time, so I can't say much. I think it's technically better than the original since none of the dialogue comes to mind other than the 'smooth jazz' line. Chell: ß - No kidding? I think they did better than they did with both Gordon Freeman (specifically in Episode 2) and Adrian Sheppard. A vocal range like that is just unheard of and I'm happy to see how much they improved since the 90s.

@Haou18289 ай бұрын
Another weird translation thing I noticed is right after the part where he kills you. When you go back after Wheatley kindly asked you to, he talks about all the stuff that''s waiting for Chell down the pit. Glados then says in the English dub "I can't believe you came back!". In the German dub she says "Unglaublich, du bist zurück" which just doesn't really fit the situation. I feel like the translator didn't have the full context for all the scenes, thus they came up with this? Same with the "Dort!" thing you mentioned. It doesn't make any sense in context. But maybe they thought Glados wanted you to look somewhere (since she says "Look...") and turned it into this "Dort! Sieh nur!" thing instead of a "Hör mal,..." or something. Anyway, really enjoyed your video!! I love the German Portal dub (not just because I'm German but also because it's really well done) and like how you showed differences or things the German dub did better.

I played the portal games when I was 11, which was in like 2014. I still remember exactly how shocked I was to see blood in a game, since that usually shocked my parents and they didn't care much anymore xd But both games are master pieces to this day and I gotta say, as great as the english voices are, which inevitably I grew to love ofc, since I interacted with the fandom, this game would have never been the same for me without the german voice actors. Be it smaller roles like the cores in both games, or main characters such as GLaDOS, I thought the voice acting was amazing Also I love that GLaDOS goes from refering to Chell with "Sie" to "Du" between the games, showing they're much more personal now and she doesn't feel the need to respect Chell anymore. I don't see this used often, the only other example I know being titanic and honestly I think it's something that really makes the experience that slight bit better. Thanks a lot for making this. Interesting vid! Although I can't understand a word of German, the voices seem to fit. It's interesting how GLaDOS switches between formal and informal pronouns in German. In my native tongue French, she always uses "vous" when adressing you (as about everyone else does), being the formal (or plural) version of "you". Want some fun trivia about the french dub of Portal 2? Cave Johnson's whole "combustible lemons" rant was entirely changed, as the idiom "When life gives you lemon, make lemonade" doesn't really have a french equivalent. Instead it was translated to "When life knocks you down, you've got to get back up", which kind of fits the vibe. Here's the full french rant translated: Cave Johnson: "Welp, I've thought about it a bit... When life knocks you down, it's not enough to get back up..." PotatOS: "Yeees..." CJ: "You've gotta smash this old hag's kneecaps! An eye for an eye and A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH! Try to get back up NOW, YOU TRAMP!!" P-OS: "Yes! Yes! Come on, smash its kneecaps!" CJ: "I swear, Life will rue the day it tripped Cave Johnson! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I'm the Big Bad Wolf who's going to knock your house DOWN!!" P-OS: "Do what you want!" CJ: "I'll have my engineers build kneecaps to YOUR HOUSE, JUST SO I CAN *SMASH THEM!!!* " _Coughes his lungs out._ P-OS: "Break a leg!! He's saying out loud what everyone else is thinking!" PotatOS has such a giddy voice during the rant too! It's so funny when she happily cheers Cave to smash Life's kneecaps XD

The best voice talent isn't worth much if the voice directing lacks. Take that "minor brain damage" bit for example: the original english V.O. puts a lot of emphasis on the "miiiiinor brain damage" part for great comedic effect. The german V.O. just rushed through these lines as if they had to squeeze the localization into a 5 second clip. Little to no emphasis. There are positve exceptions in gaming though: the german V.O. in Overwatch 1/2 are top notch and sometimes even better than the original acting. It's all about the director to make it work (and the budget to have time for proper directing).

The best "mistranslation" is when you slide down the chute in the beginning of portal 1 and instead of saying "WEEEEE!" as in an exclamation of fun for the activity, glados goes "Wiiiiiiiiiiir" as in the personal pronoun. Someone used a translator for that, I cannot imagine otherwise.

The no blood removal change makes sense since then you woundn't have to make as many engine changes if you did a soft reset to other games k'now

Oh wow, I really didn't notice they actually rerecorded the lines for Cyberpunk with the original actors. I really was disappointed cause I also always thought they just ripped the original WAVs from Portal. ...and now I'm honestly extra disappointed, cause I have no idea why they didn't write... original, more fitting/interesting lines, that would've improved that cameo 10x for me and apparently lots of others, that also thought they just got pretty awkward, fake one with lazy, canned lines.

I usually tend to play games in english with rare exceptions even though i myself am german. Portal 2 is one of these exceptions simply because the german dub is so incredibly good. Sure there are a couple oddities that do bother me like the fact that they found a way to mess up lip synching with robots that dont have mouths and the ocasional translation slip up but i really love the performances and the choosen voices so much.

Hallo Bruder. So cool how you perfectly explain the quirks of German voices in English. I love all of them! Been stuck in my head since I'm smol. And I also think they sound more serious, and in English more exaggerated. It's pretty much the case in most German dubs when I hear them. Maybe it's how our language sounds or maybe it just sounds more serious to me because it's my native.

I believe a possible reason as for why the blood was turned gray instead of removed is that the games included in the Orange Box share their assets, at least on the Xbox 360 version. This is one of the reasons why, for example, people have been able to spawn Vortigaunts into Team Fortress 2 on the Xbox. Since Half-Life 2 is on the Orange Box, and Half Life 2's blood was turned gray, it's possible that they either share the same blood splatters or that the developers just turned them all gray, without really paying attention as to what was in what game. On another note - 6:23. Yes. Yes, I would. GLaDOS ist die beste Roboter Waifu. Looking forward to your next video! Always a joy.

Yes, that's what I figured too. I just thought they might as well remove blood entirely, it doesn't really add anything.

54:19 I am gonna lean here out of the window with this one, but the voice reminds me of "Krähe" from The longest Journey and that character was voiced by Robert Missler. He retired in 2017, but Lego Dimensions Portal came out in 2015 from my quick google search, so it could be him. Maybe.

This man is slaying people on multinational level that easily! tbh, I think that missing context is primary issue of many translational errors. "This is the part where he kills us" is a prime example of that. I cannot really speak for German (because I have no idea about German) and Ukrainian translation scene is incredibly small so I will put my point that there was a russian-made youtube show that could be translated as "Translation difficulties" where dude could spent hours on tearing up a new one to some of the russian translations of popular games from English - with some big releases having full course meal on issues - voice actors not knowing context for the lines they are speaking, miscasting, bad direction etc. etc. But most of the issues with both translation and voice delivery share common source - generally translators had limited time and didn't really had much of context for their work. Unfortunately until recently not many games were translated into Ukrainian, which is unfortunate - most games that had translations were mostly domestically made - Cossacks, STALKER and Metro series etc. But it seems that more companies got interest into translating games to Ukrainian. Valve, for example, has put official translations (well, text ones for now) for all of their games, including Half Life Alyx, which was unexpected, but pleasant surprise, original Baldur's Gate got translation as well, upcoming Lords of the Fallen will receive translation and more games seem to get them in the future, which is something that I am truly excited about. Regarding quality of said translations... It varies heavily. Metro 2033 and Last Light were translated to Ukrainian by 3rd party, but by Metro Exodus developers themselves made translation and voiced lines. Which made some scenes a bit funny because it implies that in post-apocalyptic Russia only Ukrainians and Kazakh people are the ones that left, since entire game is translated to Ukrainian. Which kinda makes Stalker games feel bit more realistic where some characters speak Ukrainian and some - Russian, this is more indicative of real situation in ~2012 Ukraine, and even partially fits modern-day situation, even considering what is going on right now in 2023. But even then quality of translations can be really inconsistant, with some translations being really top-notch and some - subpar, because, unfortunately, it depends on the people, who were doing translation, which in our case is almost always third party that was doing it way after game's release.

With Germany's censorship on anything in games that even slightly resembles a certain historical military, it is kind of weird that the game could make it over with the neurotoxins used by GLaDOS in game.

I genuinely love the German Portal Dubs, not only because I'm all in all a huge fan of German dubs and even prefer them often but the way it was produced just fits perfectly to the games. There where even a few parts, where I liked Gertrudes takes more than Ellens, but the reason for this could also be, that I met the game with German actors for a long time before I listened the English Dub for the first time
