Our today’s interviewee:
Eugeniusz Sowa (born in 1929), the eldest out of five children of Franciszka and Józef Sowa, farmers from Wierzchowisko near Częstochowa. His father Józef was a cartwright, who often went to the market in Częstochowa during German occupation, where his Jewish acquaintances who had escaped from the ghetto asked him for help. After giving it some thought, Józef Sowa agreed to help them and gave refuge to several Jews at his farm, where he devised a special shelter for them. Eventually, the Germans found out about it and on 1 September 1943 they came to the Sowa family's house. The Jews and a partisan by the name of Zyskowski (who was spending the night at their house) managed to get to the hideout just in time, but the Germans found them anyway. The Germans murdered the Jews and Eugeniusz Sowa's parents. The execution was witnessed by Eugeniusz and his two younger brothers: 10-year-old Józek and 2.5-year-old Piotruś. His two sisters fled to the forest and came back after the Germans left. Several days later all children were taken to the Gestapo headquarters...
Eugeniusz Sowa's parents, Franciszka and Józef Sowa, were commemorated by the Pilecki Institute as part of the "Called by name" project on 16 June 2020. Eugeniusz Sowa was the guest of honor at the event.
