Iconic result for us, loved rewatching this. Whatever people's opinion about Sven, I don't that would have come with the expectations of whatever English manager we might have had instead at that time. RIP Sven. Was interesting to see though, Thomas Linke going off around minute 25 with what we would definitely treat as a possible concussion now. How many times does that come up now as a complete no go to let a player carry on when they've actively indicated they've felt woozy after a clash and seen performances affected because of it.

The English don't have many highlights in their history, so this one has to be their greatest achievement in football, this is their world cup final. Even their only international trophy is a fluke one with the phantom goal. It's ironic that Germany lost this match 5-1 but went on all the way to the world cup final, despite they were in the transitional period. England is the most overhyped football team in the world.
@Ernest_Thesiger4 жыл бұрын
Germany only got to the final in 2002 because they were lucky enough to be given an easy set of fixtures. They played Saudi Arabia, Ireland(who they drew with), Cameroon, Paraguay(who they only beat 1-0 via a late goal), The USA(who they only beat 1-0) and South Korea(who they beat 1-0 via a very late goal). Yes, I'm well aware that England only got to the semi-finals at the last World Cup because they were lucky enough to be given an easy set of fixtures!

Most people have probably forgotten this now but FIFA did England a massive favour and probably made this result possible the day before this game when, with three group games still to be played, they suddenly announced that they'd made the draw for the play-offs behind closed doors and that the runners-up in England's group would play Ukraine or Belarus in the play-offs. I remember England fans and, I'm sure, players too were worried about how hard the play-offs would be if we didn't win this game, so it came as a great relief to know that, worst case scenario, we'd only have to beat Ukraine to get to the World Cup. That meant we went into this game in a pretty relaxed mood, knowing that defeat wouldn't be a disaster.

Interestingly, this wasn't the main camera view that evening, that showed the match live in the UK. The live BBC coverage of the match, with John Motson commentating (RIP Motty) was filmed from the otherside of the stadium, with UK Sponsor boards showing along the side of the pitch. This is the German footage / camera position being used in this video. It's a shame that many of these look-back videos of famous old football matches use commentary that has been re-done, wasn't there at the time. John Motson also did the commentary live for the BBC for the 2001 FA Cup Final at Cardiff, that memorable commentary from him when Owen scored the winner. And yet, the re-done footage has another commentator, (actually i think it's the same guy who's re-done this commentary) who wasn't there at the time. It's a shame because for me, John Motson's live commentary on these moments are as special as the moments themselves, they are part of history of the game, and sadly they've now been removed from that history. Real shame. Rest in peace John Motson.

This England team should have really at least made the world cup final during their time, but the amateurism of the FA meant they kept hiring mediocre coaches meaning a team full of top class players always under-performed.They wasted the golden generation a mediocre chancer like Sven. This tradition continues today with Southgate who blew two semi-finals England should have won.
@harrytwood4 жыл бұрын
I agree, it's crazy that an England team that included the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, made it to a World Cup semi final over an England team that included the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, It was great that we did that at the 2018 World Cup but on paper that golden generation team of the mid 2000s did look better but were managed by very average managers.
@Delboy04 жыл бұрын
@@harrytwood I think you are being really harsh on this current generation of England players. I think the current England team actually have more depth of quality players than the Golden generation. Yes the golden generation had once in a generation talent like Gerrard, Scholes, Ashley Cole, Rooney, Ferdinand, Campbell and Terry , but I'm not sure the more limited players in Beckham, Owen, Heskey, Mills, Barry, Neville and even Lampard would get into the current team. England have fast players who can cross like Beckham so a slow Beckham would not get into the team. I think TAA, AWB, Shaw and Chilwell are much better quality than most of the full-backs of the golden Generation. Ali might not be as consistent as Lampard but he most skilful than Lampard was. Sterling has a speed and dribbling ability that the golden generation never had now England had 4 or 5 number 10s with speed and creativity.
