Germany approved the sale of BMP-1s (Pvb 501) from a Czech Company to Ukraine. These are former East German BMP-1s that were converted for the Swedish Armed Forces as such the name Pvb 501. This video details the way the BMP-1s went and also why the German government has to approve the sale of a Czech company.

More information & corrections: According to documents from the Bundestag Germany received 1112 BMP-1 from Czechoslovakia and 24 BMP-2 from the Soviet Union. Contrary to what I said in the video all BMP-1 according to this document were produced in Czechoslovakia, whereas all BMP-2 were produced in the Soviet Union. The ministry is not "finance and climate protection" but "economics and climate protection", thank you to user Kadenbauer for pointing that out.

If they are of czechoslovakian production, even the steel is of better quality, since there was a continuous streak of engineers in steelplants since austrian monarchy. Let alone the machining, which requires both experienced, educated workers, but also worker´s dedication, which was in short supply in the east. It was alwas a soviet flaw, that companies in various provinces were making quite differing results.

They have also laws in place, which forbid weapon transports through their country, if they do not approve them. Guess who does get approved, when czech arms exporters do not? That is right, Rheinmetal. Yes, to the same destination. And czech exporters need to secure expensive complicated transports through romania instead, that means 3 countries instead of one before reaching sea port.

Some of the differences to the Pbv 501 compared to the regular BMP-1 were the removal of the autoloader and ATGM-launcher, as the first took up considerable space and the latter would have created supply issues as Sweden has her own ATGMs. They were primarily bought to increase the level of mechanisation of the swedish army and were purchased along with the MT-LB which became the Pbv 401 in swedish service. (This information is from an old newspaper article about the aquisition of the Pbv 501, that I read back in the mid 90's, so I might have gotten some details wrong) When I did my national service in the north of Sweden in 00/01, the 501 had already been found to have worse mobility in deep snow than expected and was thus used in southern regiments, but the Pbv 401 was considered a good vehicle with good mobility in the far north and used (in my company) as communication vehicles.

@@TremereTT My old Engineer unit pioneered the wearing of green Swannis in the NZ Army. The blanket-counters came up with their own weird camouflage interpretation which had a full length frontal zip, double fabric layers over the shoulders with a seam on each shoulder connecting four pieces of fabric. This resulted in considerable discomfort when carrying the AN-PRC 77 radio in addition to my regular kit. The sappers in our section were 5’6” or shorter so muggins got to carry the radio. That silly design also reduced the available movement permitted by the garment and holes quickly developed in the arm pit area. We could wear our Swanndris whilst working but, the official ‘idiot blanket-counter design’ had to be taken off, in order to assemble and launch bridges, etc.. We would put it back on during smoko breaks or when going from point to point in the back of a Unimog or rover.

I have been in Munster tank museum last Saturday and our guide, an old small guy and veteran in the museum, said „I wouldn’t even gift those to my grandmother.“ He pointed out several things: 1. the vehicles are supposedly in bad condition as of now and need maintenance 2. the BMP-1 is badly armoured for its size 3. the gun sits very low in the chassis, meaning it cannot shoot over friendly infantry, thus it cannot cover advances or retreats very well. They have more modern 200mm now, but same height. 4. the visibility and crew comfort is very bad He pointed out that these vehicles were built in a time where the Soviet Union had great pushes and offensives in mind with thousands of armoured vehicles involved. The main protection for the BMP-1 was its speed and numbers. But on a modern battlefield Their survivability is difficult to rate as „good“. He suspected they can mostly be used for supply runs and as a 2nd line transport. But using them in direct combat would be suicidal. I would really like to hear your thoughts on this subject!

Given the weight of todays personal protection gear, weapons, ammunition and other equipment, it would need months of training for a strong young man to walk some distance let alone to run a few meters. So any vehicle built to military specifications with cross country capabilities and light armour protection is useful to transport and supply the volunteers, reservists and veterans close to the combat area. (or in case of retreat get them out and Back)

The Czech government owned company VOP-026 (the company that also refurbished them) bought 335 Pbv 501 (with the Czech government taking over the end user German agreement) with the understanding that it was to modernize the Czech own bmp-1 fleet. It was afterwards revealed that the actual buyer was the private company Excalibur, with the Czech government just as a middleman, Excalibur sold 250 of them to Iraq. Apparently this was planed all along with the approval of both German and Czech governments to get around the Swedish variant of end user export laws that on paper have more restrictions of approved end users. What is being sold now is apparently 56 of the remaining Pbv501s The modifications where: removing the sagger mounts and loader hatch, the autoloader was removed for safety reasons and the side skirts where replaced with new ones made of rubber. (Note I took this from the Swedish Wikipedia article but it sounds about right from what I remember from what was in the news at the time.)

I will add our latest czech news. Soon after the war started in Ukraine, the company offered to sell these while cutting off their profit from price. They will shift the delivery of BVPs into Iraq to later date. (that is a czech call sign, it means battle vehicle for infantry). They were just waiting for someone to pay for their investment. If they do not lie, it shows how heavily is czech society supporting ukraine, because it means giving up huge profit. This company is quite large however, and they can buy BMPs from any former warsaw pact country to repair and resell.

Some western weapons, like NLAW, Javelin, StarStreak and Stingers are relatively easy to integrate. Tanks, aircraft, complex radar and missile systems are a whole different game as they need major maintenance and support infrastructure along with very extensive training. It's no surprise that it's the former I list which are proving to be the successes in this enterprise. As far as the BMP-1s are concerned, I suspect they will be replacing losses and primarily used as armoured troops and supply taxis, not as offensive weapons. What the war seems to have proved so far is that these things are highly vulnerable if used as assault weapons.

@simonnance
@simonnance 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheEulerID for sure. 1 shot disposable weapons (NLAW) are an easy win. Even something like a Javelin comes with a logistical train though, reloads, batteries, maintenance. A simple one to be sure, and the maintenance is fairly easily bypassed by just getting a new set. For something like a tank or airplane the logistics gets pretty crazy pretty fast. The Russians have been doing am excellent job of demonstrating the effectiveness of tanks without proper logistical support, and 90-95% of any airforce's manpower is pure logistical support for the airplanes. Western, high tech, hardware tends to be particularly intensive in maintenance and parts. I'd expect some BMP1s to be replacements, but I also think the UA is working on standing up reserve formations for deployment, and some of these will go into "new" units. Foot infantry with machine guns, MANPADs and ATGMs are great for defense, but you need the mechanisation for counter-attack and and offensive maneuvers. The active supply of IFVs suggests that Ukraine is preparing for more of the latter.
@simonnance
@simonnance 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoMrTom definitely, I'm 100% for sending as many easily deployable, disposable/semi-disposable and simple weapon systems as the UA needs. You can fill a truck with a *lot* of NLAWs or PzF 3's, and it's not a big loss if the PzF 3 launcher needs to be thrown away after a while instead of repairing it. A Patriot system on the other hand......

I remember when you went to this event. It's surreal to me that these vehicles will be used in a major war in Europe ... taking place in 2022. We live in interesting times. The Marders are really cool. The Germans saw the weaknesses of the BMP and the BTR platforms, and the engineers did a great job marrying the best of both worlds. The BMP-1's gun is so... gross. 1 man to do the job of 2 or even 3. It reminds me of those WW2 French tanks that were operated similarly. But yeah, the gun of the BMP-1 is a headscratcher.

Which Czech company built the East German BMP-1 order? Czech quality surpassed USSR built units. I recall stories about all new USSR built vehicles having their engines and all power trains removed in Czech factories. They were stripped down and totally re manufactured, including heat treating all critical components. Assembled with correct tolerances seals, the were installed in a 100% inspected and certificated hulls. The USSR thought a job well done was 50 hours before major engine failure! Respectfully pointing out a minor English error in this video. At the 2:33 minute mark, the closed caption showed the words "info plague". I heard you pronounce this as plague. A plague is a word for disease pandemic, such as The Black Death plague of 1350 CE. "The Plague" refers to bubonic plague, caused by Yersinia pestis. Covid-19 can be informally referred to as a plague. A plague of locusts is anther example. The correct word is "plaque" (pronounced plack), an inscribed tablet attached to a wall or other structure. The only difference is the 'g' versus the 'q' in the two words. Other than this, your English is perfect.

Haven't read any news regarding this anymore but it seems to be more so something that has been denied or postboned as these systems work differently compared to sovjet style SPAAGs (Guess the Sheilka is the equivalent here) as well. There's enough arcitcles about it if anyone wants to google them. Romania still operates them as well from what I read. So maybe train personal on the border and let romanian personal provide maintenance equipment as they still operate and regulary buy spare parts as well? So just as an update I read today in german media that the Gepard SPAAG's got approved to be delievered by the german arms industry. Their are also offers on the table for 88 leopard 1A5's, 100 Marder IFV's and Phz2000 armored howitzers as well as training, ammo and spare parts. Interesting to note is that germany has also agreed to train ukrainian personnal on german lands now as the US do. Probably on NATO training facilities. This is especially interesting because the Gepards that will be delievered, are build on the Leopard 1's chassie, as well as the Phz2000's, which should help with logistics. So maybe there's already a shift happening were western heavy equipement is being trained on, here in germany in the coming days, to plan for mid to long term procurement for this systems to be used by ukraines military. It should be noted though that only the Gepards have been cleared so far and the first patch of Leopard 1A5's would arrive within 3 weeks at the earliest. Dunno about the Phz2000 but they should be faster as they are in use and demand with other NATO countrys. The Netherlands announced to deliever some of their while the german millitary will provide ammunition and training.

@@mandalorion In this case, not quite; I find it very plausible as the Sowjet tanks are built to a completely different doctrine and would be quite useless for any NATO country in the cold war; the west built very sophisticated high-tech-tanks (Leopard, Abrams, Chieftain, Challenger) because they couldn't build such high numbers of them, while the Sowjet Union tried to produce as much tanks as it possibly could to have the superiority on the battlefield. No T-72, T-80 or T-90 is any match to a Leopard or an Abrams and they would have been used very differently on the battlefield. So these Sowjet tanks didn't fit to the tactics of the NATO and there was no other use to them - so they had been sold or scrapped. The Mig-29 suffered from a similar problem (the west needs multi-purpose jets with a high range to be flexible while the Mig-29 is a dedicated short-range-air superiority fighter) and the main reason why it was kept for a rather long time was, the the NATO could gain some experience with possible enemy fighters in training.

Do these Swede-modifiedBMP-1 IFVs use NATO ammunition or Russian ammunition? Very important for logistics and ammo procurement.

i heard the pbv501 came in package deal with pbv401/ mtlb, and the pbv501 was not good enough for the swedish terrain, and never used.

I'm surprised that the Germans even kept all that old stuff. Just like the batch of Strela's they recently relocated to Ukraine. I wonder what more Cold War era stuff they have in storage.

Quite interesting. And, what about the former Nationalen Volksarmee BMP-2? Are still in Bundeswehr stocks, were sold to other countries or were kept in strategic reserve storage? Ich werde für das Video darüber bereitstehen. Vielen Dank für diese außergewöhnliche Arbeit und Grüße aus Santiago, Chile.

There was only 24 NVA BMP-2s (the NVA was going down the BMP-1P upgrade path for modernization), so not really a relevant number for military use. Most probably went to museums like the one we see in the video.

So ex-USSR BMPs now being used against Russia... Oh the irony Fun fact: If the gun is the same, 73mm 2A28 Grom, it can fire SPG-9 recoiless rifle rounds (with less propellent) which have HEAT round of around 400mm of pen against normal armour and there is a tamdem that has 400mm of pen against ERA. The autoloader from the soviet era wasn't the best having the risk of jamming or injuring the gunner, so sometimes it was just removed

Ukraine once was part of the USSR as well. Their equipment already consists of former ex-USSR equipment for the most part, of course. And the Ukrainians already operate much larger quantities of BMP-1s in their army.

I read these news today at work, and was seriously trying to rack my brain over why Germany were supposedly selling Swedish vehicles via a Czech company. Proper headscratcher this, thanks for clearing it up. As an aside, I had an officer tell me about his experience with the Pbv501. He was not impressed, and quite puzzled by how non-uniform the vehicles were. Granted, this was after the Strf90 (CV90) had entered service, and I assume that is a better IFV than the BMP-1.
@johanmetreus1268
@johanmetreus1268 2 жыл бұрын
Much better, which is to be expected of a construction 40 years younger. The main purpose of the Pbv 501 was to replace Terrängbil 30/40 and Bandvagn 206 as troop transports in order to least have shrapnel protection during marches, not to gain some kind of IFV-capability.

It's kinda funny that weapons made in the Soviet Union are being used by Ukraine to kick the ass of an Army that's trying to re-establish Russia as Soviet Union 2.0 And wouldn't you know it, all these old vehicles and weapons used by Ukraine are well-kept and effective, while the Russians have constant issues with tyres breaking or tanks being abondoned due to engines breaking for lack of maintenance.

@@simplicius11 I'd like them to be more specific befroe I bother "marking" them tbh. Especially since it seems like you expect Russia to somehow turn this catastrophic blunder of a war somehow into anything but a costly failure. There was this guy with a funny moustache, he hid in a hole in Berlin and talked about turning the tide of war within a few weeks, too. He relied on old men with crude rifles, ineffective and expensive wonderweapons and the attack of the Steiner Battalion that didn't even exist. Wonder what Putin will give us other than massively shifting goalposts away from turning Ukraine into a vassal state to some vague "we taught them a lesson".

@@simplicius11 I'm already pleased. I thought Russia would run over the Ukraine like Germany over Poland in 1939. Russia has a big army but it seems that they don't have good leaders. After all these weeks, I think now that the Ukraine has a chance. Ukraine soldiers fight for all. Their nation and their freedom. Russian soldiers fight for nothing. I think their morale is low now. Even Putin didn't expect this resistance.
