Germany floods: At least 70 dead and dozens more missing after record rainfall in western Europe

At least 42 people have died in Germany and dozens were missing on Thursday (July 15) as record rainfall in western Europe caused rivers to burst their banks, swept away homes and flooded cellars.
Eighteen people died and dozens were missing around the wine-growing region of Ahrweiler, in Rhineland-Palatinate state, police said, after the Ahr river that flows into the Rhine rose and brought down half a dozen houses.
Another 15 people died in the Euskirchen region south of the city of Bonn, authorities said. In Belgium, two men died due to the torrential rain and a 15-year-old girl was missing after being swept away by a swollen river.
In the Netherlands, flooding rivers damaged many houses in the southern province of Limburg, where several care homes were evacuated.
Hundreds of soldiers were helping police with the rescue efforts in Germany, using tanks to clear roads of landslides and fallen trees, while helicopters winched those stranded on rooftops to safety.

Hello from Nordrhein Westphalia (where all the images are from) , everyone. Thanks for the warm wishes, situation is already improving, army's out as well on SAR operations and debris clearing. Rescuers are still doing their best and some of the lost lives are on their side unfortunately, while trying to save people. As mentioned, situation is already improving, got power back here in Stolberg a few hours ago,though there are still areas without power and some without drinking water as well. This region usually sees a lot of rain (probably the most in Germany) but it's usually constant over time and there are plans in case of flooding everywhere(floods rarely happen, and even more rare on such a scale). It happened that there was sudden super heavy rainfall on an already water saturated soil, which led to this. It happens unfortunately and it will happen more and more, hope lessons will be learned by those not experiencing it so that they are prepared when it happens in their area. I lived in Germany 38 years before I came to the USA, never have I seen a flood like this one. I am so sorry for all of those who lost a loved one, their houses, pets and farm animals. It's kind of a trade-off though. Valleys can be wonderful places to live under other circumstances. Mountaintops get cold and plains are often heavily deforested and have wind-related disasters like tornados. Valleys tend to protect wildlife, trees, and rivers, not to mention they guard against external weather events. Of course, it's at the risk of things like floods and landslides.

There have been reports here in Germany that farms take in animals from other farms. There were pictures of frightened horses, dogs and cats rescued by civil protection in search of surviving people. These people do a lot and have often been on the job for 48 hours. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to save everyone

My thoughts go out to everyone who has lost loved ones lost homes businesses and lost everything in these floods and my thoughts go out to the ones that are missing. Only two weeks ago, we had heavy crazy rain fall ( one month volume rain fall in one day !) landslide in Japan . But this looks far worse. Hope the rescue workers would find many of those missing people.
