This is still the best World Cup match I have ever watched so far in my lifetime so far and my first WC was 1998 so that's six WCs. So much tension, drama and pure anxiety. You knew as you were watching that this was a historical, all time, WC classic. This match was on a knife-edge. You didn't know which way it was going to go and the Italians were getting increasingly panic riddled and desperate because psychologically, everyone knew that the Germans were great at penalties. Look at the clock when Grosso scored: 28:20. Less than 2 minutes away from being underdogs in the penalty shootout. Not only is it pure joy at the winner but relief too because the Italians weren't fancying the pens vs the Germans.

Brilliant game. I'm not a soccer fan but I was glued to the TV watching this match. 120 minutes of up and down action, both teams coming so close to scoring, and then the two magical goals at the end..unbelievable. Doesn't get better than this. I think the young German team learned something from this loss. Young teams tend to need to fail first before learning how to win. You can see the hunger in their eyes this time around in South Africa.

I'm not Italian but, believe me, that night in July 2006 was unforgettable for me. I remember my father, mother and I - we are all rooting for Italy. I have nothing against Germans, their players are great professionals but this Italian team was better. This game is, without a doubt, a World Cup classic and those two goals in the last two minutes became anthology. Marcello Lippi has done a great job then - he put together a team of Seria A top players from period between 1998-2006. Magnificent.

The World Cup has not been worth watching since this game. This was the last decent World Cup. Most international teams are mediocre now as the top leagues no longer produce home talent with players playing together every week. Instead top clubs are full of multinationals and spoilt millionaires.

Shows how good a commentator Steve Wilson was, and, still is. I remember jumping up and down with joy when Grosso scored and when Del Piero added his sublime finish I was all over the place. Over here ITV (who covered the other semi final live), thought this game was poor. 😳Then again ITV have always been anti Azzuri as far back as I can remember.

This is probably the most wise and clever comment I have ever read about this game (I'm italian).I think this match had for Germany the same effects that we suffered after the semi-final Italy-Argentina in 90: it was a game that it HAD to be won, because we played in Naples against the king Maradona.Some matches are more important than others, and I'm sure Germany really felt the importance of this event.Anyway, for an entire generation this is considered the most brilliant match of all times...
