Thanks for making me feel old. Without Boris Yeltsin, there would be no Vladimir Putin. He was absolutely terrible for the Russian people and he above all turned Russia into a poverty state. Always drunk, he needed the assistance of US election interference to get re-elected when Russia almost re-elected the Communist party into power in 1996.

It’s kind of crazy to think the results of WW2 didn’t really end until 40 or so years later. It’s almost as if the war never truly ended until the occupation did. It makes WW2 feel a lot closer than it is. And imagine the exponential advancement of technology and change In culture during that time period.

@sluxi

Well beyond things like this, obviously even now the results of WW2 are still deeply felt. There would not have been such a huge divide between east and west Europe if not for the race to Berlin and the Soviet Union forcing the countries in the east to fall on its side of the Iron Curtain both politically and militarily. There would not be strong commitment to the international order upheld by the western countries, probably no EU etc. etc.

+Joseph Longoria USA are no allies to Germany. They openly do economic and political espionage in Germany. They control the mass media and German politicians. Even Cancelers Merkel phones were wired by the CIA. And as this was discovered she said nothing against the USA, only that "friends do not such things". Germany is still occupied by the USA.

A. Peters Americans are afraid to leave. Germany could get unstoppabble again in no time. However, let's focus on our real problems today: Border control! I don't care about American soldiers who are mainly occupied with killing terrorists and enemies of the US. I am fed up of our lazy armies and the EU who is not strong enough to defend it's borders against migrants! The EU memberstates have to give more power to Brussels, to ensure every European is safe! Everybody needs to play by the rules (talking about Hungary but especially Poland). We need every man to defend our continent!

Germany, and Europe for that matter, will always be a powder keg. You leave it alone for a few years and come back there will be some mad dictator that swayed the people into blaming a race for their problems. Same with the Japanese, if they were untethered, they would no doubt invade North Korea and turn it into New Japan, then invade South Korea because they hate each other and dont want to be neighbors, China would be next. Russia would invade EU or USA, as they have done in the past 5 years.

@Darth Matt Look at a map. Germany does not border Russia. For that reason we moved our army from Germany to Lithuania. Also: The Warsaw pact was a formidable enemy. Without US help we would most likely not have be able to hold them off. Many former Warsaw pact countries are now part of NATO. We now outnumber Russia 2:1 without US help. Our American allies are always welcome here. At the moment however, I think US forces would be better placed on Taiwan, the Philippines, or South Korea. Perhaps a good idea to have a token force of a few fighters and 1 division of European troops to be deployed in the pacific, to show the Chinese that the US is not alone in defending our allies there.

@Larry on Blitz Sorry but that's almost completely wrong. Firstly, Britain offered her neutrality in any future European wars as long as Germany was not the aggressor however Grey's offer was not enough for the Germans who insisted that was insufficient, Germany had to be able to wage an aggressive war and have British neutral in that conflict (so as to severely weaken France by depriving her of her primary ally). Secondly, Tirpitz had been scheming to achieve British neutrality through the expansion of the Kaiserliche Marine, so as to deprive France of her "guardian angel" to allow Germany to crush France. Thirdly, Germany did very little (as opposed to the British) to de-escalate the July Crisis. The Kaiser had no qualms about supporting an Austro-Hungarian war against Serbia despite the international implications: the Kaiser "would find it regrettable if we did not seize the present moment" to invade Serbia. The Kaiser was adamant on "settling accounts with Serbia" and he saw it as "now or never" since he believed that Serbia was the greatest threat to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy (his greatest ally) and wished to see that Serbia was crushed, again, in spite of the international implications. The most that Germany did to prevent war was the "Halt in Belgrade" which the Kaiser, due to being capricious and indecisive, issued in a vain attempt to order the Austro-Hungarian armies to halt in Belgrade. If I recall correctly the Austro-Hungarians never occupied Belgrade until December 1914 so the invasion of Serbia alone was sufficient to provoke a World War which proves how worthless the Kaiser's attempts at de-escalation were.

And the "agreements" you refer to were FORCED on us, so they do not have the same effect - they were not signed between equals, but between puppet and master. AJ Tomecek - The present day Russian occupiers (since 1946) call it "Kaliningrad" after the first Soviet President, but the city of Königsberg was founded by Prussians in 1255 on the site of an earlier much older Prussian settlement. Königsberg has always been and is rightfully a Prussian city

DJ Thorn - It wasn't given, it was TAKEN by force and its native Prussian/German population murdered and brutally displaced - as with other historic Prussian and German lands and populations. The world has heard about the regrettable and evil Nazi persecution of Jews and the death of up to 6 million Jews during WW2, but there is silence about the post war persecution of ethnic Germans and the death of 5 million Germans during AND after WW2 - most of whom were not Nazis nor Nazi supporters and a large proportion of whom were civilians.

*The Russians will return, because Germany has never changed in essence.* This can be seen in the wars with the Serbs in the 1990s and the current occupation of Kosovo. (E.g. German KFOR fired 200+ bullets at two Serb civilian-refugees in a Lada car.) Nazism did not came from nothing, nor could it easily disappear. It is simply a fruit given by a German tree, the color may be different, but the essence is the same. (In the 19th century, Franz Bopp wrote about Indo-Germans as hypernation. Sounds familiar?)
