Strong memories of watching this game. Coming two years after Netherlands beat Germany in the Euro semi-final in Hamburg, we knew it would be a tense game. The bizarre Rijkaard / Völler incident sprang from Germany’s surprising tactical decision to play Völler wide on the left. He was giving the Dutch right-back endless problems when Rijkaard decided to take matters into his own hands and foul Völler. After the red cards, Klinsmann played the game of his life, doing enough running for two men.

The worst referee was at the final(Argentina vs. Germany), he didn't call a penalty for Argentina agaist Calderón, next play he he called a penalty for Germany when Rudi Vöeller took a dive. And in the semis(Argentina vs. Italy), when the referee added 10 minutes of extra time!!!! To give Italy the chance to win the match

Ich finde, das Andreas Brehme in der medialen Welt ein höheres Ansehen verdient hätte! Nichts gegen Matthäus, Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller und viele andere Ikonen! Aber dieser grossartige Techniker hatte ein unfassbares Level ,und eine Konstante, die phantastisch war! Er brachte fast immer 100% Leistung, und war auch ein extrem wichtiger Baustein in seinen Länderspieleinsätzen! Dazu bodenständig, und volksnah! Ich bewundere ihn sehr ....⚽️⚽️⚽️

Hallo. Ah ok. Ich war zwölf Jahre alt zur damaligen Zeit. Es ist schwer zu erklären was diese 90er WM für mich so besonders gemacht hat. Die Menschen und die Welt in der wir als Kinder damals lebten war eine andere. Besser. Damals konnte man als Kind noch in den Ferien bis Abends halb elf mit Freunden draußen rum düsen. Mann brauchte sich als Eltern Teil keine Sorgen zu machen. In der Nachbarschaft paste der eine auf den anderen auf. Ich weiß noch als wäre es gestern, das ich und mein Vater nach dem 90er Endspiel Stundenlang an der Straße standen und den Autos die an uns Hupend vorbei fuhren zugewuncken haben. Ach es war einfach eine Wunderschöne Zeit damals. WUNDERBARE JAHRE

@Daniel Thor Copperfield He may have been relatively old and not as exceptionally fast as he once was, but he had just had a blinder of a season at Sampdoria. His form was not a problem. Dutch national teams seem to almost always be fighting among each other, with their coach, or both! Certainly one would have expected him to put away one of the chances in this game, though. The Dutch team as a whole wasn't on great shooting form in this match.

I watched this game in a diner fully packed with people and standing room only. Everyone and I mean really everyone was cheering for the Netherlands and I was the only one for Germany. Even at my own table, friends were cheering for the Netherlands. And then Germany was so superior and won with the super goal from Brehme.

Funny how Illgner, the German goalie, hardly had anything to do that night, despite several big chances by the Dutch. Either the Dutch players missed the target (like Wouters), or the rock-solid German defense cleared the ball. Germany usually enter each tournament with one or often two keepers of absolute world class. Every successful German tournament is also remembered for at least one spectacular match of their keepers - Turek in 1954, Maier in 1974, Kahn in 2002, Schumacher in 1986, Lehmann in 2006, Neuer in 2014 etc. But for 1990, this is not the case. Illgner was a good goalkeeper, but not an outstanding one. Some mean critics said that if he hadn't saved a poorly executed penalty by Stuart Pierce, it wouldn't have mattered whom Germany would have put between the posts.

The Germans were not to be denied in this tournament.. they had reached the championship game in both the 82 and 86 World Cups only to lose them both. 1990 was the year of payback and the Germans beat the Dutch and Argentine teams who had beaten them in 88 Euros and 86 World Cup .. this very rarely happens but this is how good Germany was.

1990 was the time the Dutch team was internally lost. Manager Rinus Michels brought them to the European title in 1988 and a not so well received coach took over. After that one quit the players wanted Cruijff. Michels was managing at the federation and appointed Beenhakker instead. People speculated about him personally not preferring to appoint Cruijff. This soap caused demotivation and despite having a better group of players the chemistry between coach and team was terrible. The dutch team struggled in the group phase with draws only and went out early later on.

Daran kann ich mich bestens erinnern. Damals war ich 16, zu Besuch bei meinen Großeltern und wir saßen alle im Wohnzimmer auf der Couch und schauten dieses spannende Spiel. Zwei Jahre zuvor ging das Halbfinale der EM in Hamburg mit 1:2 gegen eben diese Holländer verloren, danach traf man sich noch 2x in der Qualifikation zu dem Turnier, beide Spiele endeten unentschieden (0:0 in München, 1:1 in Rotterdam). Und nun schon wieder dieses Aufeinandertreffen. Wobei der Platzverweis die Holländer stärker traf als die Deutschen - zumal Klinsmann sozusagen für 2 spielte.

War damals auch im Stadion, auf gut Glück spontan mit Freunden über Nacht nach Mailand gefahren und Karten auf dem Schwarzmarkt gekauft. 180DM, es war jeden Pfennig wert. Die Stimmung im Stadion war grandios, ein Meer von weiss. Die Karte hab ich als Andenken heute noch.

It's the curse of world cup finals. You have essentially the very best players of the world - and then you are confronted with amateur referees who clearly don't have a clue because in their home countries they normally officiate matches that are on a sub-par level. (OK, that chap back there was Argentinian, but all the same it infuriates me at every World Cup.)

Germany was incredibly physically strong in this match. The fact that they were able to find many positions in the 2nd half despite being 1 man short is proof of this. The fact that they did not give Argentina any chance in the final shows this. It seems that they are very ambitious for this cup after losing the finals in 82 and 86.

Germany wasn't one player short. Rijkaard got a red card as well. Germany definitely wanted the cup in this tournament and they were one of the few favourite teams that have become stronger than in 1986. Brazil was miles away from their level in 82 and 86, France didn't even qualify and Argentina was too dependent on Maradona who showed pieces of his genius but compared to his performances in 86 he was a completely different player.

In general, there was no team deserved this cup more than Germany. The final match was the most dominant performance in WC finals’ history. If there was someone who helps Maradona (like Valdano or Hector Enrique in 86) we can watch more balanced match but it didn’t happen.

@@kbeyazgolge Being without Rijkaard hurt the Netherlands more than Völlers red card hurt Germany. Rijkaard was very important for the Dutch defense and overall game control and the Germans made good use of his absence. Their physical strength of course helped them and they fired more shots on van Breukelens goal than in the first half. Although a final is always a special match I found that one of 1990 a bit boring, too one sided. So my favourite game of that WC is that against the Netherlands and I watched it several times. It was at the time of intense rivalry between both teams, a knockout game with high stakes and it was kind of a Milan Derby with three Inter players on the German side and three Milan players in the Dutch team. And it took place in "their" home stadium, the Scala of football.

Netherlands played a lot of pretty passes but were a shambles in the box. German keeper actually didn’t have much to do except pick out the penalty from the net. To this day, it remains a mystery why, when Rijkaard spat at Völler, BOTH players were sent off. However, this spectacular injustice towards Germany turned out a huge advantage eventually. With both teams reduced to 10 players, there was more space for Klinsmann in the Dutch defense, and he went on to make the match of his life that day.

Right before that scene, he had a clash with the Dutch goalkeeper when both went for the ball, but it was a normal fight that happens hundreds of times during a match. It certainly didn't qualify as a foul as Völler turned to the left not to smash into van Breuckelen. You don't send a player off a world cup pitch for a banality like this. Plus, it is obvious that Völler received the red card not for the aledged foul but for his heavy reaction to what Rijkaard did to him.
