Germany were the reigning European Champions coming into this tornament and hadn't lost a single game to a European side in 4 years. How much stronger would they have been at this World Cup if Rummenigge was fully fit and if Bernd Schuster had been included in the squad. @@keithlawford-r5e Italy played against strong and respectful teams in the group and progressed without manipulating the matches. That is the difference! After all, Poland reached the semi-finals of that World Cup, Peru reached the semi-finals of the Copa America the following years showed what this young team from Cameroon was capable of achieving as these players became the most successful African Team ever. A very poor attempt to make Italy look whatever you have tried to represent. In terms of Diving qualities no one can be compared to Germany as it is the only Nation that has won 2 World Cup titles thanks to the acting and simulating qualities of strikers Holzenbein (WC 74) and Voller (WC 90) which resulted in unjustified penalties and led to goals that clinched the victory and thus the world title. @@EVOZORE ha ha italy is renowned around the world for diving mate. every football fan knows it. maybe the south americans can come close but italia will always be number 1 in that regard. just like in 2006 when you cheated the aussies with a dive in the last minute and went on to steal that cup. for good measure i'll mention both of italy's world cup wins in the 1930's were rigged. take away the diving, cheating and corruption and italy doesnt really have much left to celebrate mate

@@mikeberger4199 Vor allem wegen des Spiels gegen Österreich, das war unglaublich, ich habe das live am Fernseher mitverfolgt ... dann noch Schumachers übler Auftritt gegen Frankreich. Es gab wohl auch sonst noch einige "Eskapaden" der deutschen Spieler, über die die deutsche Reporterlegende Hartmut Scherzer damals höchst irritiert berichtete.

Funny neither West Germany & Italy should have been in the final as they weren’t the best two nations in that tournament from the performances Brazil’s Zico & Platini’s France were supposed to reach the final & play each other but they failed short against the other two & the rest is history. It proves not the best team with best players & most attractive football wins the WC but the most tactical one & you don’t have to go that far from the current to the previous more recent ones of this century Argentina 2022 tactical more solid working hard as a unit defending like true gladiators led by the magic man in Leo as talisman to unlock & does the business, France 2018 same with barely a standout so called “talisman” maybe Griezmann & the rest same like Argentina of 2022, Germany 2014 same, Italy 06 with Pirlo running the show, France 98 with Zizou the talisman yet they did it together almost without him really, Brazil 94 Romario, West Germany 90, Maradona 86…ect

Unfortunately, West Germany had gone off the boil by 1982. Rummenigge, Breitner and Hansi Muller were only half fit, Schuster missing, Kaltz and Uli Stielike (who had turned into a nasty piece of work) off form. There was also a bad team spirit and Jupp Derwall wasn't strong enough to get a grip of the trouble makers.

I’m an old-fashioned idealist - to me the game is the thing, it’s the beginning and the end, and how you play is what really matters. Holland didn’t win the World Cup in 1974 but they were admired by the World more than West Germany who actually did win the trophy. When those old enough to have seen it, live or on TV, think and talk about the 1974 World Cup, it is always Holland who are mentioned first. West Germany in 1990 for example won't be remembered that way.
