Yes, I'm right there at 16:16, now looking for this comment, glad it sits right at the top 👍 London Ontario is situated half way between Toronto and Detroit. This "Fake" London has almost 400k inhabitants, that's agglomerations-wise about as large as Freiburg with its surrounding towns and villages included (Freiburg City only is ~240k). -> It makes a really nice comparison with an easy obvious answer: Freiburg es muy bonito and Fake London is of course a car infested parking-lotty wasteland...

Hey Dwayne, Freiburg indeed is a very beautiful city. I'm living there and I must say, if you're surrounded by that all year long, it's easy to forget or oversee that beauty. I try not to, but it happens. I've been hosting a hand full of couchsurfers here over the years and always had a great time showing them around. So, if you ever happen to come to Germany's South-West and wanna stop by, feel free to contact me. Freiburg and it's surroundings are amazing. Also, it's said that we are the sunniest city in Germany. Not sure, if that's really true, but we do have a lot of sun hours. :) Cheers

Home. The biggest thing about Freiburg, is the public transport. I lived about 40 of my 58 Years there and never had a car. And got around faster than many people with cars. And also the greenery everywhere, trees, little lakes and so on. I grew up, in that one place with the blocky high rise type building. It was paradise as a kid. Surrounded by woods, a lake, everything save and nice. But to be honest: looking at the traffic in most spots in Freiburg, you would think you are in the wrong city, after this video. It's not THAT nice. But much more beautiful! PS: it's in the southwest, black forrest. Wanna come?

The 15 minute city concept that the conspiracy theorists are all paranoid about has been a reality on the continent for decades. You can get to loads of things in 15 minutes without needing a car. It's just nicer to achieve that by building alternatives to cars, rather than banning them. Freiburg has urban motorway type roads too but it's just not the only option. It's also normal for German city centres to be pedestrianised, but often with a labyrinth of underground car parks underneath. Freiburg is about 1/3 the size of Leeds. In Germany, all Leeds sized cities (except Dresden) have an underground network and not only trams. About 60 German cities have trams, compared to 7 UK cities and over 20 German cities have some form of underground local rail, compared to 4 in the UK. Wuppertal, another valley city has a futuristic hanging monorail that opened in 1901. You can use all bus, tram, underground, monorail and local and regional trains throughout the entire country for €49/month with the "Deutschlandticket". Deutsche Bahn (national rail) has become quite unreliable these days and has given German public transport a bad rep but all the local urban rail networks are great. Imo, they're the unsung hero of German transit because most people need to be able to get around in the city they live in more often than they need to travel to other regions.

Same in Hamburg, we had a good tram system till the 70`s, gone for car lanes. OK we have an underground and suburban train system, but those parts of the city where the tram was is now connected by buses and now put two bricks on the in- or outgoing car lanes and the traffic jam is perfect. But we are the city with the most speed control cameras in Germany, hurray ! 😜

I have been to Leeds a few years ago and the first sight coming out of the train station was a big construction site which I hope turned out as a success. I liked the dock area and the development around Tower Square (when I was there they hadn't completed the restoration of the old tower yet). I also went to the industrial museum by bus which was an adventure by itself. Many German cities try to be like Freiburg. Usually smaller ones with a university do better, other examples are Tübingen and Münster. Karlsruhe has an excellent Stadtbahn and tram system and many people use bikes.

I guess the problem with cars is that they are still seen as status symbols. Why sit in a tram with dozens of other people if you can afford to sit alone in your shiny, large, expensive car, or better yet, your oversized SUV? Unfortunately, that kind of mentality is still quite common in many places.

NotJustBikes and Type Ashton are both amazing channels. That they collaborated in this video was great. Edit: Hamburg, my home city, while very green, has no tram system. Yes, we have the Hochbahn, a kinda reverse subway, and the S-Bahn system, a fast light rail system, as well as loads of bus lines. But unfortunately no tram system. Sadly Hamburg after being pretty much obliterated in WW2 decided to go the car route. We have three (3!) major ring roads through and around the city aptly called Ring 1, 2, and 3 which vary a bit in lanes but only rarely have only two lanes in each direction. In many cases they grow to three lanes each way, plus turning lanes at major intersections. Nobody WANTS to live near these ring roads. They are very noisy, congested, terrible to cross, and in the summer a cause for asthma coughing attacks even among the healthy. But in the last years bike lanes have appeared more and more. Nowhere close to Freiburg or (heaven) Amsterdam but definitely getting better. What's interesting is that the citizens of this rich city have been polled and most wish to see a return of the old tram system the city had before the war. Because there were trams _everywhere_ in the city. Any major road basically had a tram line running down it. But today we know that dedicated tram lines work a lot better than shared lines and streets. So I've heard of plans to start rebuilding the tram system. Granted, Hamburg is currently building its fifth subway/Hochbahn line through the city. Within the dense downtown area they truly are subways in some areas, only to snake upwards between the newer buildings to rise eight meters or so above the streets on columns, pillars, or even dykes/dams. It's so nice to travel high above the ground, over and along waterways and lakes in the summer. I love my city, warts and beauty alike.

I actually moved from Freiburg to Leeds once (with a short detour via Spain). Yes, it's a massive difference. In Leeds I was once almost 10 minutes early for a bus because I knew that they are sometimes too early. It never came. The next one was supposed to be half an hour later, but was massively delayed. One massive problem in Leeds is the way tickets are bought. (Or has that been fixed?) No ticket machines, no tariff zones. Upon entering the bus, you have to tell the driver where you want to go, and you get a ticket for that particular stop. If you need to change, the same happens in the next bus. Season tickets are expensive and often not worth it. As a result, there are ridiculous delays at the bus stops; the longer the more people are traveling. I don't know if it's still like that, but there was bus service with a 30 minute interval that regularly had the following problem: During rush hour, one bus quickly got 30 min delay due to traffic and the ticket buying delays. As a result, the next bus was initially almost empty and stayed on time. This led to the situation where you had two buses, let's call them A and B, every 60 min instead of one bus every 30 min. If bus A was stopping somewhere and bus B had not passengers who wanted to exit there, bus B skipped the stop entirely. At the next stop the roles were reversed. Unlike Italians, British people don't like to think about these things, but the reason for Leeds' public transport problems is clearly massive corruption. The bus companies are extorting the citizens.

@Dwayne Leeds: stayed there in the mid 1990s... Students had bikes, then, too. And you already had pedestrianized old roads transformed into beautiful malls/edit: arcades, corn exchange... However, since Leeds hadn't been bombed, they tore down a Victorian quarter for those 'wonderful' modern buildings in the 1950s... All the best for the new development!

I'm from Dortmund, where 98% of the city center was totally destroyed by british bombs in ww2. Sadly they rebuild big parts of the city for cars and just a few iconic buildings like they has been. But in the 70s and 80s they ended up making the City Car Free. Imho most of the City Centers in Germany are totally Car-free. Our Citys are as old as the ones in the UK, so they are pretty narrow. Several of these old grown Citys have a Street formed like a Ring around the old Center next to the old Walls from several hundred years ago and an underground Train Systems. You should take a look an Münster aswell.

I am single and do need a car, unfortunately. I live in a small village (about 450 inhabitants) that does not even has a store… Although I could, technically, get to my work using public transportation, a ride that takes me 20 minutes by car, would take me to walk to the bus, take the bus to the trains station in the next town, take the train to the city, where I work, take the bus from the trains station there to the university and walk from the bus stop to the building where I teach. Now, one of these trips would require somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half (IF trains are on time). I teach my first classes at 8.15 and am usually in the classroom by 7.45. Am getting up at 5.45 now so I can at least enjoy a cup of coffee before leaving the house. If I had to rely on public transport, I would need to leave before 6 to make sure I’m at work in time… Now, I also lug around a massive trolley with a computer I need for teaching, and many folders, books, and cables etc. equipment (that thing alone weighs about 25-40 kg, depending on my teaching load and types of classes). Additionally, I often carry a big backpack with my iPad, money, documents, emergency make-up, a big water bottle, and stuff women carry around. Another 5-10 kg. Sometimes, like when I have loads of exams or corrections, I may need yet another bag for those. Needless to say, I am not carrying that stuff in and out and around busy and full public transport. No way! So, for some, I do understand the need for cars.

Hi Dwayne, If you look up this wikipedia entry -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freiburg_im_Breisgau -- you'll have a button with the correct pronunciation close to the beginning, plus a lot more info on this gem. I've been there many times, and for me, Freiburg is one of the most liveable (mentality, cuisine, nature, architecture,...) and beautiful cities in Germany. This also is a city with Italian-type weather! And BTW, the city is located right next to the Black Forest (Schwarzwald), which you might have heard of as well as Lake Constance. So Freiburg im Breisgau is definitely worth a trip, if not more. I once almost would have moved there if my wife weren't a little too rooted in her home region. But that's another story... 🙂 Yet another great reaction! Very best from Germany

There were some very nice small cars from different manufacturers until the SUV "craze" now you need to be lucky if even to find one being made. So I am driving a car that can seat 4 people, and has space in the trunk, completely alone. Although it is an electric car I am not that happy about this point. It would be nice if they would think about single people more, but as long as they do not acknowledge this group of people it will not happen.

such 'bike cities' have in reality more medieval like structures (it makes less to use such structures for the big cities. it works in the case of Amsterdam, Aachen, Freiburg etc. but its not good for Berlin, New York, Milano, Warsaw, London, Tokyo etc.). And people always forget to tell that more bikes also means more bike accidents (thats just ignored and propagated as 'safer' while it is not) and in difference to what people believe they are often more serious - because cars are slower in cities and more separated from the rest. this separation is key - which such 'bike cities' often especially in neuralgic places do not have (Trams and bikes and pedestrian share the same space - which is not really the most modern way, but again just the result of the existing smaller structures). in the end of the day the best modern transportation infrastructure is a mixture of all and it depends on the context which mixed solution is the best. just being anti-car creates not modern transportation even if some like to sell that esoteric/antimodernist bullshit.

And the people of Freiburg took it literally. When the citizens of Freiburg didn't like something, they just freed themselves. They didn't like their ruler in the early 12th century, they bought him out of his job and choose their own patron (not ruler), the Habsburg family. They did have to add support, but were otherwise a free town ruled by the citizens. The minster of Freiburg was not built by the catholic church, cause they were busy raiding in the east against muslims. So the citizens of Freiburg built it themselves (starting under the financial patronage of a Zähringer and many others, took them over 300 years, but worth it), guilds, artists and craftsmen donating a LOT to it, being honoured on the windows forever. Unlike any other catholic church, that one does not belong to the church. It first belonged to the rulers of Freiburg, but after being kicked out, it belonged to the city aka the citizens of Freiburg. Every priest and monk preaching inside the church is just a guest speaker and can be kicked out any time. Even after Freiburg became an archdiocese and the minster officially a cathedral, the rights, ownership and duties (for maintenance) did not go over to the church.

I live in the countryside, so it's not impossible without a car, but it's difficult because public transport (bus/train) isn't as frequent and doesn't go everywhere. You can also see that in our village, many of my neighbours have two cars, and there is a lot of traffic on the main road between 5.30 and 7.30 in the morning and 4.30 and 6.30 in the evening. The distances are also longer, my father also lives 70 km away in the countryside and with public transport it would take me twice as long to get there with multiple changes and my friends also live 15-75 km away. I cycle a lot from spring to autumn because the terrain here on the North Sea coast is flat and I can get to the shops etc. just as quickly by bike as by car and cycle paths are usually safe and relatively well maintained here. But when I'd live in a bigger city, I'd sell my car in an instant. An example: My GP is 13 km away one way. By car, I take the country road and Autobahn and I'll be there in 15 minutes at most. Alternative 1: Bus. 49 minutes and one change. Alternative 2: Walk or cycle 1.5 km to the train station, then 6 minutes by train, then 18 minutes by bus -> 40-50 minutes.

those narrow water channels were created as part of the medieval water infrastructure. in difference to what many believe from the medieval age the medieval age also had 'aquaeducts' of all kind like the classic Roman Empire before, overground and underground as well as 'wells' with filter systems and so on. it is NOT true that beer was drank due to bad water (thats just bullshit, not only because its wrong but it made also no sense, since beer is especially sensitive to good water - if one talks about famous German beer and the world then one does NOT in reality talk about just good taste but about 'technology' and chemistry/physics. we talk here about technology transfers which started in a more modern sense in the medieval age when at first monks/monasteries than later also cities did a 'scientific research' for the best ingredients and processes (thats why Yeast became a thing)- and also later the the beer brewers were among the first one who were picking up new technologies for separating 'yeast' cells, because the exact dose mattered all the time and at medieval time one could make it as good as possible but not that accurate. anyway, all those things were why German beer breweries spread around the world. Apropos: also 'Lager Bier' has a reason for its name. To create such a beer you need certain temperatures for some time which means you had to have a 4 season climate zone at least to 'process' the beer making. those were at first cellars in certain seasons but just like with modern cell technology they also used always over time the newest 'cooling technologies' (it also took some time and different steps to create modern fridges) - and for transport.

It is actually proven that the bike lanes that are right on the street are safer because the bikes are much more visible for the car drivers. If they are hidden behind bushes there are more accidents at intersections.
@Ulrich.Bierwisch
@Ulrich.Bierwisch 15 күн бұрын
That actually depends on the way bike lanes are build. Dutch bike lanes are very safe because they are designed differently from the old dangerous bike lanes we have in Germany on a lot of sidewalks. The painted bike lanes are OK for the people who bike anyway but not for the people who avoid cycling because it feels dangerous. It is important that people are feeling themself safe and this is not possible on a painted lane between the lane for cars turning right and the lane going straight. Nobody would allow his kids to cycle between busses and big cars. We need protected bike lanes to get a much higher percentage of the people to actually bike.

There is Freiburg and Freiberg. They are two different cities, so keep that pronounciation clear: Freiburg is pronounced fryb-oo-rg, while Freiberg is pronounced fryberg

You mean fryb-oo-rg and frybear-g. Fryberg would be pronounced more like freibörg for a German.

@lazrseagull54 I think it is close enough to the german pronounciation, but sure, if you want to be absolutely precise, yours works.

Unfortunately the USA is built around the development of cars, whéreas German cities were developed long before the automobile, with great public reliable transportation used by all classes of people, including fantastic bike and walking paths, surrounded by beautiful parks. The only time my father used his car, is to get to his fishing spot or other special places . I miss it very much.

Unfortunately that is not true. All and I mean all! Us cities were built around a train station and were mostly walkable and many, many of them had a tram system. All these beautiful cities you had were bulldozed for the car in the 50ies and 60ies and so on. This is a general misconception Americans have. I’m recommending a Not just bikes Video about that…“The dumbest excuse for bad cities“.

I would really love to not have to own a car, but I'm living in a very rural area of Germany where I do need it to get somewhere in a reasonable amount of time. Three buses a day (four in summer), that's a joke. We have some stretches of very good bike paths, but they tend to end up on a busy road. And I wouldn't want to transport my weekly shopping with a bike. I admire Freiburg for reconstructing their inner city as it used to be. And I checked the number of students there vs the population, and the 10% mentioned in that report are correct using the official numbers from 2023. But the outskirts, as in many cities, are not beautiful at all. Another report about Freiburg made me skeptical of whether I should someday visit it. It may have been biased (I'm sure it was) but the people they interviewed seemed all to be well-to-do and arrogant persons who were proud of the housing project they financed (for) themselves and kept stressing the importance of a green environment. I have absolutely no doubt which party they vote for, if they aren't even members. One point in favor of Freiburg, however, is that they have the warmest climate in all of Germany. I often get envious of them when I look at a weather map. Sometimes, when on the temperature map everything else is in shades of blue, the one spot that is still green is Freiburg.

Check the landscape in the video. This is a city with mostly flat areas. You can't have that infrastructure in a city that has big height differences. Rail cars are not good with hills and bicycle user have the same problem. Where I live you could never do that. There are only a few streets that do not lead uphill or downhill.

Bremen is the bike capital of Germany, there are far more bicycle paths and bikes in Bremen. Ask any car driver, the bikes drive you bonkers.

More bicycles than cars are not so extraordinary. I just looked out of my back window and counted the parking spaces. There are about 80. Add the 10 in front of my building, and you have 90, give or take a few that are not in plain view. My house has 30 flats, and there are 5 others with 24 flats each. 90 parking spaces (not all occupied at the moment, but I take that as 90 cars for this group of houses) for 150 flats. Curious me counted the bicycles in our basement a few weeks ago: 40 bicycles, for 30 flats. And this house is nothing out of the ordinary, same sort of people, same size flats and all... so it's safe to say that there are a total of 200 bicycles in the basements of the houses. And 90 cars parked outside.

@@PotsdamSenior I love how even blocks of flats have basements in Germany so residents can store bicycles and washing machines etc. In the UK, basements are a luxury and only 10-15% of households have one.
@PotsdamSenior
@PotsdamSenior 16 күн бұрын
@lazrseagull54 The washing machines are in the flats. But there is a dedicated room in the basement with clotheslines to dry your clothes if the weather is not nice enough to use the lines in the back yard and hang your laundry outside. And for each flat there's a ~4 sqare meter locked cubicle for your "stuff", like tools etc. That's pretty standard in all German blocks of flats.
@lazrseagull54
@lazrseagull54 16 күн бұрын
@PotsdamSenior I know. I used to live in Bonn and I have family and friends in Essen and they all have either loft or basement access with lots of shared space and the locked cubicles you mentioned. Some of them even have underground parking under their building. All of that is very rare in the UK. I've also never seen rollläden here because the windows usually open outwards so people tend to hang up curtains instead. The hot and cold taps are seperate so you have to choose between burning or freezing water and washing machines have to go in the kitchen because it's considered a safety hazard to have electrical sockets in the bathroom. My sister went flat-hunting and asked a landlord how much floorspace the flat had and he asked her if she's German because he claimed it's usually just Germans who ask about floorspace. Ich vermisse vieles an Deutschland.

i have a great idea: let's just swap places......freiburg is like a big village. many people like freiburg, as a visitor or even a student it may be a nice city. there are many pubs, they meet. the people of freiburg are unfortunately very special. neither particularly open to strangers, nor polite...... freiburg and the surrounding area is certainly a good place for nature and sports enthusiasts, as well as if you want to have an alternative life in terms of culture, cuisinge and wiothout any fashion aspects. in this case freiburg is the place to be. Sorry!
