GERMANY: Discussion about "Pride Month" - Is the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution interfering with freedom of expression?
A video by the Lower Saxony Office for the Protection of the Constitution on the topic of "Pride Month" on the X platform is currently causing heated discussions. In the tweet, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution declares the so-called Pride Month to be anti-democratic. The right-wing scene had repeatedly called for such a Pride Month as a counter-movement to the LGBTQ+ community's Pride Month. The video sharply criticizes this right-wing initiative. Constitutional lawyers such as Volker Boehme-Neßler describe the video as illegal and unconstitutional, since Pride Month is fundamentally covered by freedom of expression.
Ulf Poschardt, editor-in-chief of the Weltgruppe, is of the opinion that political education or influencing citizens is not part of the mandate of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Poschardt criticizes the focus on minority policy by a state institution and emphasizes that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution should concentrate on its core tasks, such as combating left-wing radicalism, Islamic anti-Semitism and right-wing extremist terrorism.
The Office for the Protection of the Constitution should only intervene in cases of concrete suspicion. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution should use its resources more efficiently.
According to Poschardt, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution may have exceeded its authority with this video and interfered in political discussions instead of concentrating on its actual tasks.
