@Nagy Bianka The young Hong Kongers, who are Hong Kongers also have the right to British residency. Its anyone who was living in Hong Kong before 1997, AND their decendents. So the only people not eligible are the Chinese who have moved into Hong Kong. Australia and Canada are looking to open up on the same terms as the UK, as opening up to the Chinese citizens in Hong Kong crosses a line in meddling in Chinese affairs, something Australia cannot afford to piss off the Chinese by doing.

I've long been a sceptic of our European Union but not anymore. I've changed my mind about it for a year now... The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks, if any. The world has become very competitive. China, USA and few other countries pretty much lead the world and I think we need to play a bigger part. Because let's face it, neither the Chinese nor the American model aren't well balanced in terms of social and economic benefits. But we in Europe can only compete if we go about it together. God I sound like a Europhile.
@benz.
@benz. 4 жыл бұрын
I guess a standard response to this idea would be, does this objective of working together require the 'EU'? I think many would be inclined to think that standing up together on the world stage doesn't require a political and economic union with so many strings attached.

@@benz. yeah but it does tho. A caste majority of EU states are basically insignificant on the global stage now. In terms of military and economy (as compared to the huge continent sized states that are running, walking or crawling their way to super powerdum) and although this doesn't mean that Europe will get invaded or something stupid like that, it does mean that Europe doesn't have that big of a negotiating power in terms of trade.
@driver13g27
@driver13g27 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've turned Eurosceptic due to the centralization of powers on topics where the nation have a different stance. A common asylum policy is a recipe for disaster, just like topics like abortion, drugs, euthanasia, ruling any of that on EU level. The EU is a German power project to dominate the EU-26 through their socialist agenda - why? Because EU law is above national law, so the Germans can disadvantage competition, which is an inherent problem of this one-size-fits-all approach - some countries are gonna like it, some aren't, so take it back to the member states (in my opinion). Europe is the slowest growing continent, all EU countries have monstrous taxes and the rule of unanimity is turning into qualified majority in many cases, which then really would mean that Germany dominates over other European countries, just like 90 years ago but without the violence
@SwissSareth
@SwissSareth 4 жыл бұрын
As a Swiss, I probably won't change my mind any time soon: I want the EU to fail and vanish. The simple reason being that it's been constantly trying -- and in some cases succeeded -- to strong-arm is into delegating authority to the EU institutions. That's not the behaviour of a partner, that's the behaviour of a tyrant.

Peace will always cost less than war and crisis. Germany has learned this lesson out of its history and cannot deny this fact. If this humble attitude can be combined with strong leadership, then Europe as a whole will set a milestone in facing emerging/established markets like China and Africa. The sacrifice of our great-and grandparent's generation is memorable, and we must prevail in honouring it. We want to call ourselves intelligent and learn from our past. Succeeding together may not be optional. The EU model is more important to the world than we might think while living in it.

Of course, schengen is a benefit. And so are the $$ (even tho they will go back to the EU eventually). The only downside to the EU i see is the Euro. Because of it goods prices have skyrocketed to the EU level, whereas they used to be much much smaller before.

I see some ways Germany organises things which are very effective and future orientated. One example is the job education system with apprenticeships and the support for lifelong learning. I am German and i do not see that just one sided. It would be great if we could import parts of French law or other European elements. This normal Presidency is more a symbolic thing. It will not change a lot. The focus points Dr. Merkel made (or not made!) show one point very clear - the UK is out. Not only politically. De Gaulle was right - Adenauer was wrong 😉 #ATAD #IndyRef2

A Law like Vorratsdatenspeicherung, which was rejected twice by the highest german court for being unconstitutional, an oppressive law like this which allows the state to save and keep any data on citizens for ever just in case they step out of line, to be pushed back on a country by the EU court. Rod Simmons Could you please elaborate on that topic? As we all do know, the EU tends to be quite bureaucratic and about anything remotely important requires not only a majority of countries, but also a majority of EU population being represented by those countries. And in really important topics, a single country can veto a topic into non-existence. So I’d like to know how or when she did “unilaterally decide” on immigration.

I am an Austrian citizen living in San Diego Ca. I am so deeply disappointed that most Americans that I know, are biased without reason against a political system that is a little different than what they know from this one here. The results of a european style government is that many of the concerns and expenses forced upon Americans, like taxes on its citizens that do not serve it citizens, do not exist in Germany or Austria. Accountability, not the firing of inspector generals is what this country needs. We need a government that cares about its people. In America, the government channels it resources into destroying it's enemies, in Europe the government channels it's resources into caring for it's citizens. PLEASE AMERICA, we look dumber than ever, and things are not getting better. If we continue to accept what we are fed by our leaders, perhaps a nationwide "Darwin Award" would be appropriate.

Perhaps there is enough disruption now to properly change, create a new world for the future, as continuing as is is not an option for anyone anymore. If we have to do it, happy to have people with experience leading the change - especially if they are able to reform their thinking the way Merkel has done: the focus areas are the right ones, very today. No guarantees for success of course but we have to give it our best shot and this one I might even choose myself.

For those unfamiliar with how the EU works, the presidency isn't a dictatorial overarching power position. The EU has the European council, the European commission and then the legislative branches, European parliament and council of ministers. There are different areas of power within the EU, each with their own council to approve or reject proposals. Don't start thinking that because Germany has presidency that suddenly Germany has control of the EU, much like how power is divided in other democracies.

Many of the things they plan to do the UK as a whole would be dead set against, as well most of Northern Europe, but without the UK they don't have enough power to block. And since the EU is going in a direction the UK would not like, and considering the UK would have to contribute massively to helping Southern Europe if it had remained. It seems like this year was the perfect time to have left.
