In quegli anni non si cantava l'inno, non lo si cantava mai semplicemente perche' non era consuetufine. L'inno italiano suonato in questa partita e' per meta' inventato e l'altra meta' male eseguito. La germania ovest, (...perche' quella e' la Germania ovest ) ha trovato sempre un muro invalicabile con l'Italia che tra l'altro nel "78 giocava stupendamente, nel "82 era piu' esperta e determinata forse anche piu' umile, ma spietata. Come e' cambiato il calcio, il modo di muoversi, di giocare, di esultare ecc. da allora ad oggi e' totale.Grande Giancarlo.

Italia had a Great team in 1978. I liked Antognoni , a Great player.

Antognoni, a great playmaker, came back of injury in 1978. So he wasn't in good shape and his world cup wasn't awesome. Bearzot even substituted him for Zaccarelli (a much less technical player) against Austria and Netherlands.

@tyzhen i see what you mean. i've been an avid football fan since mid 70s, and i can pretty easily draw the comparisons between the past and the now. you note that it started to deteriorate in early 90s and that is very true. the reason being that this is about the time when everything became overly commercialized - art, sport, movie, music and vene the human relationships. there certainly are profound reasons for such adverse change, but I don't want to analyze it at this very site.

I hate to seem a mumbling old man who tends to criticise everything new in favor of everything old, but very objectively speaking - the footbal was Tthe game, the fight, the rivalry back in those days. And the players were devoted to please to fans with their skills, not with their glamour girlfriends and posh commercials...

While there might be some truth to what you are saying, I am not sure that is the whole picture: According to Rudy Krol, the Dutch captain, it took their bus an hour to get to the stadium for the final. The Argentinians took a longer route on purpose to get the Dutch players to the stadium and their bus was stoned and people were banging on the bus to the point that the Dutch players were afraid for their safety. In addition we saw that before the game, while the Dutch players were ready to start the final, the Argentinian players wittingly arrived late on the pitch (about 3 to 5 minutes), and then delayed the game by protesting to the bandage on Rene Van der Kerkof's wrist (which was injured in his 1-st game playing against Iran on group stage), claiming that it could hurt Argentinian players! Mind you, Rene played with the same bandage against Peru, Scotland, Austria, Germany and Italy, and none of them protested! So much for Argentinians' cordiality, sportsmanship and hospitality !! If any body was in danger, it was Rene himself, as he was playing with an injured wrist. By the way, writing in capital letters is not gonna add any value to one's comment, specially in the light of contradictory objective facts versus subjective assumptions. It is the substance of one's comment that counts.
