I thought that the series overall was good, but I got the impression that the crew were uncomfortable initially making the series. David Lane once said, "directing artists was a totally different thing for me, terrifying. I used to have a nice little spot on the way to work where I'd get out [of] the car, be sick and carry on and hope that a bus would hit you on the way." The episodes shot in MGM studios in Borehamwood were very slow paced and the way the scripts were written, especially with the scenes in SHADO HQ, it would be easy to replace the live actors with the puppets they replaced. The latter ones, shot at Pinewood Studios were much better. The episodes were of faster pace and were more entertaining as such. Having said all that, Ed Bishop was terrific as Commander Ed Straker. It's not surprising that entire episodes were written to put his character through the wringer emotionally and physically, he rose to the challenge each time. I have two episodes in particular that I love to rewatch, Reflections in the Water and Subsmash

This show certainly deserved another season. Loved it as a kid, and still do. The cars, moonbase, the great intro, SID, Skydiver, all great stuff. It's very unfortunately that it seems impossible to put on such a show now. Watched it on a local station in the USA in the 1970s.

What struck me about the series was it's darkness. There was something fascinating about the unremitting darkness of the UFO world, it really recaptured the grimness of war, probably coming out of peoples' memories of living through WW2. The whole motivation and character of the aliens was always mysterious and never fully explained. There was definitely a hint that they were very closely related to us in some way, perhaps they were visitors from our own future, or perhaps they 'seeded' our planet. I will always consider UFO to be a truly unique and original series despite being built on the 'alien invasion' cliche.

Anderson's concepts in _UFO_ were _way_ ahead of their time, such as the 'aliens' using an oxygenated liquid to enable breathing and also protect against acceleration. But it was also the very human stories that made you think; the idea that the 'aliens' being partially lobotomized humans that still had a spark of individuality left to them, despite the _real_ alien's best efforts, made them more than two-dimensional stock space opera villains. I still recall, after all these decades, the episode with Col. Foster and an 'alien' helping each other to survive on the Moon, and the tragic ending of that episode still haunts me. I was in my mid-teens when I saw the series on our side of the Pond in the 1970's, and I realized quickly that this wasn't a 'kiddie' show, it had genuine depth, and Anderson deserved more credit than he got.

I admit that at first it was another Gerry Anderson series, that was enough to bring me to watch it. And besides all of the great effort invested in it, I have to admit that it was the Neru jackets that locked it in for me. I was a child of the sixties and wore them. I miss that jacket.

I’m 57 and the sound effect made by a UFO in space still creeps me out to this day.! I loved the tv series in Canada, and remember making make-shift tubes we could slide down on our way to rocket ships to intercept UFOs! I have recently decided to make my way through the series again on DVD to see what I missed. I rank UFO, Space 1999 and The Prisoner (albeit not sci-if related) to be my most favourite tv how… testament to both the genius of British Television production of the era and early-70’s childhood obsessions with space, nuclear war and a future forward-thinking society at the time.

Watching it in the 70s (I was quite little at the time) and much of it went over my head. But that UFO sound really stuck in the head. Fast forward a decade, the fashions, back-projection and hair really dated the show. But it was still pretty exciting stuff. That opening theme and montage with the quick cuts still gets the blood pumping today, fantastic score, and those opening beats. It was a pity the visuals of the interceptors and their 'nukes' never quite matched the scale (UFOs at near light speeds being hard to hit so dropping a nuke in their path seemed both bonkers but practical). It was actually that part of the show which inspired us to make our own PC game featuring SID (the game was a circular variant of missile command with samples from the show), it was really a testbed for a graphics library we made and a bit of fun. The concept still has legs, the idea of a super secret military organisation defending earth against extra solar threats is still pretty compelling. And Strakers car. That car.

I loved this show since it was introduced in 1972 to the United States... we had just gone thru UFO flaps in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The campy British UFO series light the fires of the pre-teens & teenage boys imaginations in the U.S. The concept of "alien abductions & organ harvesting" were introduced... really scary for that time when I was 12-13 when I watched this series. I am 60 years old and look at series with fondness... it makes me sad how many of the series actors dies of cancer from smoking

One thing clearly inspired by UFO was the computer game "X-Com: Enemy Unknown". That game and its sequels are available on Steam. In the first game, you are directing earth-based interceptors against UFOs and sending out armed recovery teams to collect the alien artifacts for investigation and research. The Game "X-Com: Enemy Unknown" even inspired its own remake, the game "UFO: Extraterestrials", which is set on a human colony, not on earth, but has the same themes of intercepting and investigating alien incursions.

I find it interesting that as time went on, Gerry’s shows became darker. There is a line right from Twizzle where it was all jolly japes and fluff through too Space: 1999 where things became gradually less and less optimistic (I mean, moon out of orbit and an earth left in turmoil... how much darker do you want!). UFO was where this really became obvious and it was awesome!

Quite possibly THE coolest TV show theme song in history. Great quick - cuts, 60’s jazz / action tune...it would just grab you and there you were, unable to turn away. Discovered entirely by accident, I was perched in front of the TV channel surfing (directly in front of the set, back in those days) on a Saturday afternoon. Some locally - based station, apparently manned by madmen of good taste, had decided to roll out the re-runs....I was immediately hooked by the models and theme song (and female Moonbase staff)...1974 or ‘75. Also got my hands on a Dinky Toys SHADO APC, missile - launcher...!

Watched UFO and all the other Anderson series. Loved this one so much! The books adapted from the series were excellent for an avid reader in their teens. They gave details the series couldn't. Was wowed later to find that Ed Bishop, who did such a fantastic job of bring Cmdr. Straker to life, had been the voice of Captain Blue in the earlier Captain Scarlet series. If they could bring this series back to life with acting and stories as good, with modern practical model effects combined with CGI (kinda like the resurrected CGI Capt. Scarlet they attempted a few years ago, except with live actors)it would be grand. The big question would be finding a creative team on par with Anderson and company to do it.

Never watched it as a kid. After picking up the A&E Space 1999 release; I decided to watch some older Gerry Anderson shows. Really enjoyed this one.

I was in fifth grade when the TV station in Roanoke VA started showing UFO. Friday nights, I think. Never missed it. A few weeks ago I found it on my Roku at IMDB. I found one I missed.

I loved UFO, loved the characters, the stories the vehicles and SID! in fact to this day (2019) the UFO theme tune is the ringtone on my smartphone.

When it was first screened here in the US I was amazed because it had characters that conflicted with each other and which had realistic problems that tormented them. Recall that much of US science fiction television was produced by Irwin Allen, who rarely rose his shows beyond the adolescent level. Star Trek of course dealt with adult themes but the characters were 300 years removed from our social setting and didn't seem to be driven by the same desires. You could count on someone in UFO to do something rotten for personal reasons that were completely understandable and not at all far-fetched. It was very refreshing.

I remember that the local station crammed this in before Saturday morning cartoons started around 7AM. I never missed it. It's amazing how long ago it was and how young I was.

As a child, I loved the show. I ordered a DVD of it from Netflix and was shocked at what I saw. In the episodes I got, 90% of the dialog was "Have a drink." "Have a smoke!" "Hey, look! My desk has a secret vodka dispenser." I had planned on renting the whole series but never finished that single DVD, which I think contained three episodes.

I love UFO-like everyone else who has posted here. Derek Meddings and his fabulous effects especially that fantastic battle between the 4 Mobiles and the UFO lying in the bottom of the lake. I read Sylvia Anderson,s fine book, Yes, M, Lady. Her Autobiography from the beginning of her marriage and partnership with Gerry Anderson, and painful divorce from him. The details are unpleasant because when people are no longer with us, we should focus on the reasons that brought them into our lives! As a child watching Supercar in 1960 at age 4, I knew that I was watching something very special. Glossy and well made, and seeing the Anderson,s names just reinforced the notion that something very cool was going on. Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun, was so thrilling that even 50 years later it,s still exciting to see it and digest it,s entertainment values. The sleeping astronaut's visuals used to perfection as Ed Straker,s moving mood lights!!!

I actually started it very recently I'm on episode 3 but it's become quite interesting. Definitely a interesting change from watching supermarionation to live action. Can't wait to watch Space 1999 afterwards
