Being told that you’re no good , particularly as a youngster, is a poison and to overcome that negativity deserves the utmost respect.

Superb gentleman, Gentleman Gerry Cooney, a former devastating boxer, and a straight good guy that I was privileged to watch. His former nemesis, Larry Holmes, speaks well of Gerry and to this day call each other up, like good friends do.

It’s definetely rare that an old professional boxer can speak so good and shows no signs of brain damage like Gerry in his age.

Well after he lost to Larry he fought very sparingly so he definitely doesn’t have the wear and tear a lot of guys do

Being so tall probably didn’t get hit in the head very often when sparring.

Great interview! Informative, entertaining and nice rapport with everyone. What a genuinely nice guy Gerry is. And Bill, don't quit your day job!! ;) Thanks guys!!

Sometimes I think Cooney was big yes but you saw him in the ring against other giant-sized men. You see this and its a reminder that WOW he is a big big dude. You also realize that while he's an old man he would STILL utterly wreck almost all of us if he really felt peppy and wanted to start really punching again lol. Anyway, great to see this. Cooney one of the great challengers of all time against the greatest HW champion of all-time, Larry Holmes. both living legends.

Such a nice man, he had the best lefthook to the liver area, if it connected right the fight was over

Nasty left hook. It sometimes had that same sound as a strong, gas powered weed eater blasting through some bigger weeds. Prior to the Holmes fight Gerry had a huge % of KO’s to the body. Breaking guys ribs.

Gerry's mannerisms seem odd to me until I looked up his background and sure enough his family originated from Canada's Newfoundland a people that are so different than others from Canada. They talk different,they drink, smoke,dance like wild people...

Holmes would have finished him sooner but Cooney landed VERY HARD low blows on 3 separate occasions to keep him off and slow him down.
@JAMESGANG-f5u Жыл бұрын
Great stuff except at the end when Gerry couldn’t figure out that the guys left was on HIS (Gerrys) right. So the guy had to ad lib and go with it on the fly .... probably thinking to himself “OK I guess Gerry is going to teach me a RIGHT hook” 😒🤨 But seriously I appreciate and can definitely relate to what Gerry had to say about substance abuse.

I remember the Holmes vs. Cooney fight as a kid. I didn't realize Cooney was a great fighter. I thought he was a bum. That's what I was told as a kid. I remember the figh was a black vs. White thing. As a kid I didn't think that was right but Holmes was my favorite fighter because the first ever boxing match that I ever watched (prize fight) was Holmes vs. Ali. The first Ali fight I seen. Ali was a legend and Holmes beat him.
@valentinomarini4048 Жыл бұрын
He was a bum compared to all the other fighters he was a BUM!!!!!! Holmes destroyed him he was great at being a bum who managed to get a title shot and make some big money and yes it was a white vs black thing and he lets us all down but I knew he would get beat!!!!! The only really white hope champion died in 1969 in a plane Rocky Marciano was the only undefeated heavyweight in boxing history 49-0 and he represented the white champion the rest all got beat and never even made it to be a champ

There was alot of Gerry was just a tomato can opponent, he proved he was not. Very well spoken and grateful for his life in boxing. I enjoyed Holmes he ruled the division for a long time. When Larry fought Ali, Sli was well past his prime, and it was sad to witness that fight for me. It would have been great to see Ali v Holmes at both of their primes.

All 3 of Gerry' s losses were to Hall of Famers. No shame in that. You couldn't be just anybody and beat Gerry Cooney.
