Gerry was an amazing soloist, tremendous feel and expression in his playing. He brought life and light to many of Chucks pieces.

I grew up listening to the music my mother played. I was enamored with Mangione's music. Even as a child, listening to this particular song brought a sense of ease and comfort that covered me like a warm cozy blanket. 35 years later my mom died and I neglected myself by not allowing to fully feel the loss..... and then I listened to this song..... and I cried harder than I ever have in my life. I'm so glad I still have those memories and appreciations

My favorite Chuck song. The flute playing by Gerry is so beautiful. I am so depressed since I heard the news. I am happy though I saw Chuck at Mohegan Sun in CT last June on fathers day. I was with my parents and we were pleasantly surprised when Gerry hit the stage. My dad plays the sax and Gerry was one of his heroes. Needless to say the show was phenominal. That is the only thing keeping me together at this point!

I just returned home getting ready to go on a surprise Valentine's outing with my husband. As I walked in the door my husband informed me the we were going to see Chuck Mangione; however, the concert was cancelled because 2 of the musician's were on flight 3407. I was heartbroken. We stayed home and listened to "Chuck /Live at theHollywood Bowl." I listened to my favorite song "Chase the Clouds Away" several times. I just found out that Gerry played the flute on this song. May bless him.

I loved Gerry and his playing. When I was a young sax/flute player I would sit for hours trying to absorb his sound. His improvisations were always startling and his playing always lifted me out of my troubles. I wanted to do that. Years later I would meet him at the Musicians Union Hall on 48th Street when we were in different bands and he a;ways made time to talk to me. He made me feel like "one of the cats". His death crushed me but his music always renews my spirit. Play on, Gerry.

I just revisited Land of Make Believe - the 1970 recording at Massey Hall in Toronto with the Hamilton Philharmonic - incredible soprano sax solo by Gerry Niewood ... I have never not loved that solo and that recording, and it sounds as fresh now as it did then ... then I found out he died in a commuter plane crash over a simple mistake. How tragic! R.I.P. Hopefully he lives on in the hearts of those who. like me, have loved his playing.

I am pleased that I knew Jerry. I met him when he was taking students at my friend's music school in Fairport, NY. Gerry as well played alto sax and he took my ninth-grade son as a clarinet student. He was a good teacher and son Clark like him. Gerry soon moved to NYC as a session musician and I'm sure was very successful. We were so saddened to hear of his passing. The Dreams number is a significant musical triumph.

I, like others, considered the instrumental version of Chase the Clouds Away" "suicidally" beautiful. Esther's vocal rendition made it into one of the most beautiful love songs in music history; full of hope. Secondly, it honors the legacy of Gerry Niewood, who so tragically lost his life. If Ms. Satterfield or a relative of Mr. Niewood should happen to read these lines:" Please accept my sincerest Thank You for this eternal gift!"

+Mary H /// If was just thinking about that particular special, just the other day. As much as I dig 'S&G', I only watch it because I knew Gerry was going to be in the orchestra, (can't remember how I knew about that.) I also remember being pissed afterwards because Gerry wasn't featured in any lengthy solos, (... only a very brief solo...on alto,I believe....) It was an H.B.O. special by what I remember. Geeesh... I thought I was the only person on Earth that remember Gerry doing that gig.

I grew up listening to this stuff. Gerry taught me how to scat, because I would play my trumpet along with CM and sing to Gerry's solos...I can to this day. As far as the pilot's training, I am a captain at another regional airline, and know for certain that those pilots did in fact have the training, upper register...but they lost situational awareness, and reacted innapropriately for the crisis situation they created by not adding power with the drag out after a level off.

Didn't know the Goo Goo Dolls were from Upstate NY. I was born in Auburn. Saw the Together concert at Oswego State, probably in '72. Chuck brought a busload of Rochester musicians from Rochester in snowstorm to make the concert. They were so beat up from the trip that they took a break just to regroup. When they came back on stage they killed it. When I was in school in Albany later that year, Chuck had his Quartet at Renseleer Polytec. I got to chat with him backstage during the intermission. Later saw Together again at the Eastman in Rochester with the entire ensemble. Used to see Gap at a bar in Rochester. Last saw Chuck in Cerritos CA a few years ago. Talked to him, he remembered the Oswego trip. Without a doubt my favorite musician of all time.
