For what it is this CGI version wasn't bad, but the magic of Supermarionation was more than just the fantastic puppets, the stirring music, the exciting plots, the brilliant voice cast. It was also the fact that all the effects were "real". You knew that these were miniature marvels of engineering, tiny but brilliantly realised explosions, amazing to-scale movements and interactions. They were amazing creations done with care, passion and enormous craft and skill. They had soul. Ach... maybe I'm just getting old...

With 3D printing and smaller and smaller electronics I am wondering if it wouldnt be possible to create such a series rather cheaply. The biggest effort is getting the "puppet control electronics & mechanisms" set up and designing the vehicles and sets used to be printed. You can blow up a lot of them ... and they are easily replaced.

Agreed. I also think the modern Thunderbirds isn't anywhere near as gripping as the old series. The episodes aren't long enough for proper world or character building.

Obviously Spectrum's airborne warfare school does not include watching 'Independence Day', given that no-one on Cloudbase seems to have expected that Mysteron dreadnought to be equipped with shields. Regarding Colonel White's comments about the 'war of nerves' entering a new phase, one feeling I got from this series was that the slow nature of a war based on terrorism and infiltration was as wearing on the Mysterons as it was on Earth and they were increasingly looking for a quick win. Maybe their leadership had promised their people a quick and relatively easy retaliatory campaign and weren't able to deliver; indeed, the humans were even beginning to push back into Martian space, only being stopped by luck on most occasions. Facing internal unrest, they were forced to adopt ever more overt and conventional strategies. Honestly, I've never bought that that Mysterons' goal is conquest or even general destruction. There are several episodes that show that their technology and understanding of the fabric of reality so superior that they could annihilate the human race almost without effort. Yet, instead, they play mind games and commit terrorist atrocities. Why? Maybe, that's because their goal is only to frighten and hurt humanity the way that humanity hurt them. Exactly tit-for-tat. The real question is: What is their idea of 'proportionate response'?

I have to admit, that all the Edge-of-the-Seat Action, Drama, and intrigue packed into these 21+ Minute episodes, is far superior than any 60, 90, 120, or 240 Minute show since at least the 1990's. Good to see the Angel Interceptors are taking off from the beginning. Also, it`s a great view they gave us that the Angels are in formation flight. This reminds me of Clay Lacy`s aerial footage during the '80s and '90s and I think the white-painted fuselage really sets off in wild blue yonder. The Angel Interceptors really showed the combat capabilities and the potential they got in this episode and I really loved to see those jets swaggering through the sky. It was impressive to see the Interceptors return to the Skybase for rearming, getting ready for the next outbound run. The Skybase`s hangers are equipped with fully automated systems that contribute and succeed in minimizing their turnaround time to be relaunched. Speaking on military mind bases, in this case, the other squadrons will take off to continue the mission while just returned teams are being worked on however, the Spectrum seems like they are really concentrated on operating just 5 precious Angel interceptors are enough to be deployed without any backup units. I also found out that the skids on each wingtip are not missiles` launching rails, but they are "the skids" to act as the landing gears. This time and regretfully, Spectrum did swallow a bitter pill, however, they will take this opportunity to leap forward for the next battle. The Spectrum will collect every one of the evidence as gathering intelligence for the countermeasure and be ready for whatever the Mysteron`s outcome might be. I felt a strong will in Colonel White`s words in the last scene, as the Angels` white wings are taking off behind him.

I think I can only second other people's opinion here - this was criminally treated back in 2005, and should be reconstructed as a new series - maybe on Netflix, where it could fly - with all the episodes from the classic series remastered and put together with the new stuff, you'd have plenty of content for at least 2 full seasons, or a couple of seasons if you went for less than 26 episodes per season...

Looks good but they SERIOUSLY need a hard remix of the classic theme. It was such a big part of the original show - a very important of the character. That pulse pounding theme tune set you up for the show. In the same way as Bond, mission impossible, thundercats , 70's Superman, Star Wars, Joe 90, Thunderbirds, Knight Rider, Starsky & Hutch, Airwolf - I could go on. . . even Hart to Hart had iconic theme tune. Let's get the classic theme tunes back. I'm baffled why theme tunes have become SO generic and disposable in the last 25 years. One only has to hear a classic theme tune and it's an instant hit of nostalgic great feeling. Get the Captain Scarlet theme tune back! One of the best around - Iconic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHvMnpawn92CptE (instrumental version) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmK9eGafYpWkY9U (8-bit) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn2xoWeqoadgjM0 (fan tribute😅)

I loved this series when I was a kid. Shame they have not done a better job of upgrading the concept and characters. It still feel British, 60 and 70's and not a 21st century cinema standard production. The 3D could been been much better by todays standards but the animation is okay. Overall, it feels under funded and rushed. Captain scarlet needs the Marvel universe treatment if it is to fully mature and realize it's full potential. Which is in my view is on the level of Star Wars. It could be a block busting hit if they would just take that extra one step. Still waiting.

@roboldx9171
@roboldx9171 3 жыл бұрын
@@ACtheLegend I can believe that. Even in 2005 the concept could have been expanded or scaled up from the original version. For instance, why is the mysteron presence on Mars only a city? A civilization would have been more intense, impactful and believable. It feels that they just lifted the original concept and copy pasted it into the 2000's hence the naive feel the concept has. Update the concept please, Rerun awaited.
@ACtheLegend

@@roboldx9171 what would a larger Mysteron civilisation add? They're supposed to be a comparitively small settlement who are hidden from and already more than a match for Earth. You change that and you don't have Captain Scarlet, it becomes a generic sci-fi show.
@roboldx9171
@roboldx9171 3 жыл бұрын
@@ACtheLegend A generic sci-fi show Captain Scarlet already is. After reviewing the idea of a civilization. I thought that it would be too close to War of the worlds. Better would be a Mystron colony poised for expansion. Earth would be next. For me up dating the concept into modern day ideas of sci fi entertainment is not a bad thing but a positive one. I would prefer not to see a rerun style of Scarlet like what was done to the 1980's Flash Gordon Space opera, produced in the flavor of the 1930's original. That is the feeling i'm left with in the 2005 series. Scaling everything up would be far more believable. I just think Scarlet could be impressively massive, globally on the level of Star wars but very different if the writers could fix it.
@ACtheLegend
@ACtheLegend 3 жыл бұрын
@@roboldx9171 that's missing the entire point of the series though, it's nothing to do with a massive war between huge civilizations, it's one small but incredibly powerful force on Mars toying with the people of Earth vindictively. The Mysterons don't care about Earth or expansion, they're just curious to see how the inferior humans react to their various gambits. If they wanted to, they could wipe humanity out without a second thought and there would be nothing Earth could do to stop them.

As someone who remembers the original (which I watched with my gran on Sunday afternoons in the sixties), I thought this was pretty good. The CGI isn't the best but it is a good story, true to the style and concept of the original with engaging elements of Aliens and Dr Who thrown in for good measure (not to mention the fact that much of the episode seemed to be based on the destruction, in a dream, of Cloudbase in a mass Mysteron saucer attack - Ep 31).
