Massive respect to the cables for holding up as long as they did!
@JStarStar00
@JStarStar00 Жыл бұрын
In fact, the cables held all the way. It was the roadway span which broke apart because it flexed too much in the wind. The cables remained up even after the roadway collapsed.

So the cables never snapped? The roadway instead broke free from the cables?
@JStarStar00
@JStarStar00 Жыл бұрын
@@logangreger1638 Technically it was "suspender ropes" which snapped -- those are the smaller vertical cables from which the roadways hang from the much larger main cables. The main cables of the bridge never snapped.

And the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built and with trusses underneath the bridge it was called the stable Gertie
@unclej2763

Even though the original bridge had collapsed in 1940 due to high winds, it still took 10 years to develop the replacement bridge to this day. I read about this, and had a feeling although this was partly due to World War II, the building of the new Tacoma Narrows bridge was also delayed due to engineering and financial issues. Still, even when the new bridge was finally constructed with the trusses the original didn’t have in comparison to other bridges like the Golden Gate of San Francisco, it was done under an $18 million budget and took from April 1948 until the replacement bridge, also the Westbound one, finally opened to the public on October 14, 1950.

We studied this bridge in my high school physics class with regards to resonate frequencies. For the same reason a singer can shatter a glass by singing the right pitch loud enough, the wind blowing at the right speed can cause the bridge to resonate at the right frequencies to collapse. Especially if the bridge is poorly designed.

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was built in 1937 _with the hollow cross trusses._ The original Tacoma Narrows bridge was built in 1939(?) and collapsed in 1940, didn't follow the design of the Golden Gate Bridge. Why the engineers back then don't learn??

But on Thursday, November 7th, A windstorm whistled across the narrows. The winds were now hurtling at 67 kilometers per hour (42 miles per hour). Gertie began to gallop more than every. Suddenly at 10:03am, the bridge went to a torsional twisting motion (the bridge suddenly went into a twisting motion) The sides rose and fell 25 feet up and down every sides tilting at 45 degrees.

And on Saturday, November 2nd, 1940. The engineers new the bridge was about to run into problems. There's 2 options. 1. Cut holes in solid girders to allow the wind to pass through. 2. But shields on the girders to keep the wind away.

I don't understand why the engineers kept saying it was safe. Anyone with eyes could see the flexing of the concrete on the bridge. What part of "concrete doesn't bend" don't they get? That is why they use concrete to build high structures and monuments - because it is solid, ridged and strong. Some flexibility might be acceptable, but the flexing that was happening even as the bridge was being built was extreme. The engineers were more concerned with protecting their own reputations than with the safety of the public. To allow the public on the bridge until they could figure out what was happening was egregious, outrageous, and without regard for the public's safety.

It looks more like the Tacoma side, judging by the big leftover strand of the roadway girders, and the lack of the little tower, but I'm wondering this too. If it's fake it's impressive how convincing it is edit: its real kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4KYppaGgJd8e6s

Actually, Leonard Coatsworth, even though he was a news editor, didn’t head to the bridge for a news story. At the time he was crossing it it wasn’t news at all. But it was bobbing up and down quicker than usual. He was heading back from his summer home. Just as he went past the east tower, one of the cable bands became loose, causing the bridge pattern to change from bobbing up and down to twisting from side to side. Coatsworth’s car lost control, and skidded to a stop. Coatsworth got out, and was thrown to the pavement by the violent movements. Terrified, he actually tried to go back to the rear doors of his car to get his dog out, but the bridge motions were so violent at that time he couldn’t stand. Coatsworth thought the bridge was minutes away from collapsing, instead of an hour. Crawling for several agonizing minute, he reached the safety of the east tower where he met up with a college student who had also been trapped on the bridge. Both of them ran back to the toll plaza. Coatsworth phoned his newspaper, saying that the bridge was about to fall. Coatsworth never wanted to leave his dog behind, but he was too terrified to go back onto the bridge. When the winds died down a bit, and the bridge movements slowed two others tried, including Howard Clifford, a reporter who was a friend of Coatsworth and professor Burt Farquharson, who is rushed out to the bridge to film the eccentric movement as he was on the team that was trying to figure out ways to stop those movements. Both were avid lovers of dogs. Clifford tried first, but was unsuccessful because the undulations became so violent, he was forced to turn back. Once the winds calm down significantly again, Farquhason made his attempt. This time he was successful in getting to the car. Farquhason tried to pick up Tubby out of the car, but the poor dog was so terrified by the bridge is crazy movements that he bit the Professor in a panic. Farquhason tried to reach again, but the wind started to pick up again. The movements starting to become dangerous, he regretfully turned back. He’s the guy with the mustache who is seen in the video. Only about 30 seconds after Farquhason got back a 600 foot section of the bridge dropped out. Both managed to get off the bridge safely, but unfortunately there wasn’t much they could be done to rescue Tubby. While reflecting on it, Coatsworth said that even if he had managed to get him out of the car, the bridge escalations may have been so violent, he wouldn’t have been able to hold on to him anyway, and since Tubby only had three legs, he wouldn’t be able to save himself. So you see, there was no mal intent.
