Thinking about the question Conrad mentions, from the school classroom: the lad who asked "How can Jesus be the best preacher, if he only convinced 12 people?". We might think about great orators and measure greatness by the number of people convinced. The job of a political leader is to get many to vote a particular way, or march for a cause. But voting and marching are surface behaviours. We all know that not everyone who votes or marches is fully engaged with the programme. I wonder if that's what is going on in John 6, when it becomes obvious that at least some of the followers are not really followers at all, they want Jesus to be something he's not, rather than following wherever he takes them. So he sifts them out with his words.
