Fun fact the game box cover that is also the art of this video's thumbnail was drawn by famous comic book artist Simon Bisley, mostly known for being the artist who redesigned Lobo in the 90's to give him his most iconic look, he is also well known for doing covers for various books like Heavy Metal, Doom Patrol and 2000 AD.

The stage, EVO 2022. Grand finals for street fighter 5 have ended and the champ is being given their trophy. The moment it touches their hand, the stage lights go out. On the big screen a picture of the moon appears and a booming voice comes through the arena speakers. "When the night turns violent and the moon bleeds..." The moon on the screen turns a deep crimson, washing the audience with a red light. "A child will rise to face the Demon lord in bloody combat..." The silhouettes of various warriors appear on the smaller arena screens as the moon begins to crack. "...and the lord of demons will fall by the hand of..." War drums boom as the moon is destroyed in a flash. "The WEAPONLORD" Thus announcing that the first ever Weaponlord xband national tournament will be held at next year's AnimEVO

Weaponlord with improved animations and speed would be fantastic. One of my biggest issues I had with the game was that the movement just wasn't fast and fluid enough to have a flow that was befitting of its' system, the characters felt heavy and floaty when jumping and the 16-bit systems just couldn't do the game justice it needed due to their technical limitations. I think the inputs being such a barrier on anything but a joystick or maybe analog stick was a real problem as well.

i remember playing this as a young kid and only getting through halfway the singleplayer. read the manual and did not understand or absorb any of the mechanics explained. sure, i messed around mashing heavy punch and kick in sf2 before in the arcades but, for me, Weaponlord was the beginning trajectory of me not understanding fighting games at a deeper level and falling off almost instantly. mash button, see blood, get lucky win. Good times.

Soulcalibur would be totally different if Weaponlord never existed. Tekken would be totally different if Time Killers never existed. Street Fighter 4 onward would be totally different if Battle Fantasia never existed. I definitely prefer the Tarantino approach of finding value in everything, instead of dismissing some fighting games just because the top 8 doesn't play it

Megadrive/Genesis version is (at least in my infinite wisdom) inferior in exactly one way: Jen-Tai doesn't shout "Anura!" when she wins. I mean, there's no parralax scrolling, but I don't notice that in game. It runs *so* much smoother though, I feel automatically gravitating towards the "superior" SNES version is the reason a lot of people struggle with it so much.
@ghouliethousandtrouser29052 жыл бұрын
Y'know, I fkn love this game, but man... Dunno if this makes me weird, but I really hate all the art for the "HD remaster". The old art was obviously low res, but it was detailed, dirty, ugly, vicious and fkn perfect. The remaster stuff kinda undoes all of that, and it just reminds me of deviantart. Or adult swim. Or a disney film from the 90s. None of which feel right. Keep the aesthetic or don't bother, I say. The original game is basically perfect as-is, it's not even as "impenetrable" as people say. You just gotta learn a few weitd inputs.

Watching Reggie trying to pull off moves from the list perfectly encapsulates my limited experience with this game on an emulator There may be a lot to this game under the surface but the level of intuition necessary to engage with any of it without having direct tuition is a serious barrier. I think nowadays with a bit of a faster game speed (not by much as the methodical nature of the game is not really that common nowadays and would say it apart) as well as some work on the animation (moves that lead into negative edge follow-ups could maybe benefit from some sort of flash/pose at the end and more smear and impact frames would make it feel a bit more kinetic and impactful. They were obviously limited by memory so they made the choice to go for depth over smoothness and keeping on-model probably means some animations can reuse some of the sprites multiple times to render the characters, so it was a valid choice considering the hardware. A modern version of this game using some of the refinements that have been applied to the genre since could be quite special)
