Once again you have done a review of gear I already own! I’ve had this same blanket for over a year and a half and it has accompanied me to my dialysis treatments every Mon., Wed. and Fri.! In fact, I’ve given direction to a number of other patients who now use them! Along with that, as you know, I went hammock camping back in January when temps reached -27c at 2:30 in the morning! I just snapped it into a top quilt

Down poncho: Cool. I like your idea of carrying this on day hikes, just in case. So many people go without insulation, thinking that they are safe with a space blanket. Or nothing at all. Every year, a few of those people never make it back.

Looks like a useful blanket. Thanks Mark for the video review. My wife and I were stranded on Mustang Island Texas in a small trailer during the Big Freeze of Texas a couple of years ago. This would have been really nice to have along on that trip!

Definitely looks comfortable. One thing you might want to know and share is that the down is ethically sourced (as per their website). Duck down harvesting can be extraordinarily cruel. All the best.

A lightweight blanket is a great piece of gear. I prefer this over a wool blanket because of the weight. I actually just ordered the snugpak jungle blanket which should be arriving this week. Your blanket looks like it might be warmer due to the fact that it has down feathers. But like you say if it gets wet it's a problem unless of course you take care and don't get it wet. These type of blankets along with a space blanket will keep you very warm. I only ordered mine for emergencies. Quebec.

I agree. Wool blankets are great next to a fire but otherwise way heavy. Thanks for commenting

A useful measurement to help give you a sense of how warm a down item might be is how much loft (inch’s, centimeters) the item has. The greater the number the warmer it’ll feel as more air is trapped. Admittedly it’s a rough aid but if you know a quilt is X inches of loft than something similar should be similarly warm. Obviously, construction will matter especially sewn-through versus baffles. The quality of insulation matters too. Do you know how much loft this blanket has?

It has approximately 3" but is of sewn-through box construction. Thanks for commenting

Good review. I have another blanket that can be worn like a cloak. But mine isn't down. The Mega Puffy does look warmer than the one I have, but mine is water resistant. Pros and cons to both.

While not the same creature at all, i carry a snugpack jungle blanket. One feature I like about that is that because it is synthetic, i can drape it over my Aegismax 1 pound down bag to increase its usefulness in the cold... and the condensation affects the top-most layer, not my down. That mega puffy sure looks like a nice product, too. I suppose i could use it as midlayer between the bag and the jungle blanket for even colder temps. Haha

Good point about using a synthetic blanket as an over-quilt. Thanks for commenting

I've had the puffy (or double puffy) blanket that looks just like the one in the video for 2 or 3 years. As a blanket, it's not all that great. Maybe wrapped around you, it does better. But at about 50° I was pretty chilly under it as a blanket. Definitely won't use it in the cold by itself. As an addition to a sleeping, sure. The temp ratings on it are pretty deceptive for a $60 "blanket".
@MarkYoungBushcraft10 ай бұрын
I believe a sleeping bag will always be warmer than a blanket as it creates a "cocoon" of warm air that a blanket does not. In either case, you have got to something under you as down compresses so much. Thanks for commenting

Sugestion: Color code each snap with different color nail polish. But be careful not to drip polish on the cloth. Doesn't matter what color just same color match each half of snap.

Yeah yeah, blanket, down…..whatever. What’s more important is I got my Ti firebox today! 🎉. So I wanted to ask you, in your opinion, do you think it really matters if I do the break in with a few smaller fires, or is it fine to just go for it? Cuz I want to use it Easter weekend, and I don’t really have time to go out to make a little fire a few times.
@MarkYoungBushcraft10 ай бұрын
Not really, I know Steve says that but a reasonable cooking fire would be low enough.Titanium does have an interesting characteristic of holding more heat inside the fire chamber that could concentrate heat and cause warping. I have a very small bit of warping. Nothing functional so I have not even bothered to straighten it out. Could always start with a low fire and slowly build it up. . Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

G'day Mark, amazing how cold one's back gets sitting by a fire. Unless you want to make like a rotisserie .......... and spin all night, ..... wearing a blanket as a cloak is a winner ; ) ...... helps keep the mozzies out too. History shows, and in fact I have done so with a cow hide, though to be honest more of a macho thing back in the day ; ) However, not sure this one would be very resistant to sparks. Incidentally, I've always wondered why down gear never has an external waterproof layer to get the best of both worlds, fair to say cold and rain often come together .....works well enough for birds, and animals for that matter ; ) do you have any idea why that cant be achieved with man made modern materials mate ? could well be wrong, though I dont think you've mentioned that specifically before. Personally, I loathe !!!!!!! .... bags, ... so I would certainly use this in place, since, I sleep hot to start with and the overnight temps, when and where, I go are "relatively" high. If I get too cold I'll just chuck on another blanket ... the woolen one, ... I just used by the fire ; ) Cheers Duke.
@MarkYoungBushcraft10 ай бұрын
Would be interesting to combine a thinner wool blanket with a down or synthetic one. Kind of the best of both worlds. I know there is hydrophobic down but I suspect waterproofing would capture moisture inside and slow drying. Thanks for commenting Duke
