Here in the Appalachians of southwest Virginia, as a medic, I can report it only took three days for fire and rescue to run out of diesel, compounded by power outages. The rescue squads and hospitals are quickly running out of oxygen cylinders. Nat'l Guard to bring in water, fuel and medical supplies. Only three days, folks. Hospitals downgrading to ER services only due to water contamination. Gas stations have already run out of gas. Water purification pumps totally destroyed. Bridges washed totally away. From an older woman's point of view: - When those annoying grocery store circulars come in the mail every week don't throw them out without taking a peek through them. For example, Giant Food Stores had Starkist Tuna on sale for two weeks 10 for $10. You had to buy in quantities of 10. The dates on these cans were anywhere from September 2026 to December 2027. No limits on how many you could buy. This week ShopRite stores have Bumblebee on sale 12/$12. Tuna is usually anywhere from $1.39-$1.89/can! This week ShopRite has batteries on sale at, I believe, 40% off. Name brands. I could go on and on. My point is, sit with your morning coffee on the day when you get the circular (or next morning) and, after you have prayed and read your Bible, make a list of these sale items. And then, when you get home with your items MARK your canned goods top & side with expiration month & year, then rotate your pantry. Before you know it you will have a little stash. If nothing else, it's a hedge against these sky-high prices, and you can do a LOT with tuna! Just an old gal who has shopped for a family of 9 sharing tips! Costco isn't always the answer.

I have always stocked up on everything. I learned in the Army and as a Ranger having backups and backups for those backups. Now I am 54 and I have a family and a wife who has some health issues. I am fortunate enough to live in an area that is away from city and we are off the beaten path. But bugging out is my absolute last option. For the past 6 years I have stocked up shelf stable food,water and consumables. Just like the military we have durable items and expendable items. Having some chickens even 6 of them will give you at least 3 eggs a day. Fresh eggs don’t need to be refrigerated and you can even waterglass the eggs and they will last 12-18 months. Solar battery packs are a great way to keep your electronics charged and you just need to use the sun to recharge the pack. Cash in $20 and $10 is the best way to keep it. I do $300 in small bills and and the some $200 in $20 and $10 bills. You can get a potty at a Salvation Army store or place that sells second hand stuff. Propane cylinders for your camp stove or buy the adapter for your grill tanks. The dollar store is the cheapest way to get candles and plates and silverware. Please don’t put this off. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Food for your pets is critical also. Winter is almost here.

Way to go on the preps! One thing to keep in mind with Dollar Store (or any) candles. I lit a tea light candle from the Dollar Store and after only a few minutes the entire surface of the candle ignited like a torch!!! If you use candles, just REEEAAALY keep an eye on them. Just thought I'd remind people...
@sargeinamerica2 ай бұрын
@@ostrobogulous1 good point about the candles, I use ceramic trays for them and a metal pot holder thing to keep it off the table. That way you can keep all of the wax in a container and make more candles out of it. Making fire starters out of used TP and paper towel rolls with the lint from the dryer works great for my woodstove. Also LED string lights are great for light they are cheap and only need 2 AA batteries some use AAA But you get my point. Big D batteries are expensive and take up a lot of space. Right now at Walmart they have the clear battery operated Christmas lights. The other thing people should think about making plywood blanks for their windows and store the screws with the covers in case you have to button up your house. Having fire extinguishers is also important. Anyway I could go on and on. You all stay safe stay strong and be vigilant.

@sargeinamerica More good tips!!! Thanks!!! I just saw a comment recently about buying the little cheap solar light "picks" that people stick in the ground for landscaping. They are cheap, and you can put them outside to absorb light during the day, then bring them in to use for subtle light at night. Safe for kids to walk around with and no flame or batteries to worry about! I thought that was a cool tip, too!!!

@@michaelkaiser1864 never heard of that one. I have heard of using olive oil in the lamp oil to cut the smoke. Granted you can buy smokeless oil but in case you can’t find it. Also save all those oxygen packs for your rice and beans if you store them in plastic containers. Having some cans of gap filling foam is good for quick repairs of holes in your house from storm damage. Also having tarps set aside for emergency use. I’m had a massive tree fall on my house a few years ago during a snowstorm. I wasn’t able to seal the hole in the roof but I did have some foam on hand and filled the hole after I pulled the branches out. It kept the water out until I was able to fix it. Also hand tools and hardware for everything that you can use. Timber lock screws and nails. Also have an assortment of screws for repairing anything that needs fixing. I bought some new trash cans for storage of dog food and grain for my chickens, I also bought some new plastic trash cans with lids for rain water capture. There are also collapsing rain water barrels on amazon. I like the trash cans with wheels on them. Anyone else have ideas please share!!

After Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast my area was without power for 10 days. Thankfully I'm a camper and had plenty of ways to cook, make coffee, etc. From stoves & grills as well as a fold up hiker stove that just uses sticks (kind of like what you showed).I always have propane, charcoal and firewood on hand so that I have options. Even though I have lanterns for camping I also have a variety of different solar lights from string lights that I put in hallways to motion lights that I put in rooms that were used the most. Those lights were a godsend during the outage. I didn't have to use any fuel or open flames thanks to them. When I saw the storm forecast I started getting my ducks in a row just in case it turned my way. The solar lights were all set out in the south window to charge up. Battery banks were charged so I could charge my phone. I tested the generator (always keep gas and oil on hand for this), organized my camping gear so that the stove etc. was easy to grab if needed. I gathered up the empty juice bottles that I keep on hand and started freezing water in them so that If needed I could keep things cold longer in the fridge and freezer. That was a big deal. It allowed me to keep food from spoiling for a long time. Whenever I boiled water for coffee or cooking I always put the extra that I didn't use into a thermos so that I could use that later for washing up and not have to use fuel to heat more later. I rigged up my battery operated camp shower pump and bucket in my bathroom so that I could take a decent shower. I used my auto jump start pack to run the 12v pump. That goes a long way for morale when you can shower up and feel clean. **One thing I will recommend that I never hear people mention - If you're in suburbia or some place where the population is more dense and you plan to run a generator, get yourself a very heavy chain or cable to secure it to something. Not long into the outage here thieves were going around stealing generators from homes that they knew were using them. I also recommend that you try to only run it during times when you are awake and can monitor it. Your fridge will be fine if you don't have it on generator over night. One guy here was using his generator to keep his fridge running during the night. In the dark hours of the early morning thieves came into his yard, started up his lawnmower and set it so that it would stay running and then took the generator. The guy didn't realize the generator was gone until he got up because the mower was still running. - When I went to the big orange box store to get a chain for mine the guy in the store told me that I'd better get something good because they sold out of bolt cutters.

I'm in Upstate SC and I can tell you that for 98% of the population here, it is full blown SHTF. People getting out of vehicles to yell and accost other drivers stuck in grid locked traffic. The few grocery stores that are open are only taking cash and their shelves are almost empty. Gas is rare, and the stations that are open and do have it have lonnnnnng lines of unhinged motorists. Almost nobody in my area has a generator. Which means they can't cook. Their perishable food is perishing. I see little to no lights on in house windows when I'm walking at night; indicating they have no lights or lanterns either. I think if the power isn't back on by Tuesday, people will start doing desperate things. I'll say as well that I have seen incredibly few police in my area. The lesson? No one is coming to save you.

Our town did without water as well for 12 hours. Had some stored so things were fine. We were somewhat prepared. Had a fully charged battery and inverter to charge phones. When it gets low we'll charge the battery with the vehicles. Have full tanks but going nowhere unless necessity or things are normal. Oil lamps providing light as well as candles. Our fridge food turns out today. Transferred it to deep freeze which is finally thawing. Scouted for gas stations and stores with power. Topped off last vehicle, found very little canned foods. So we stocked up on what was left. Beer, cola, trail mix, snacks, and soups. Apparently nobody thought of this as food. Oh yeah, tortillas. We'll be good for a few days. Next few days we'll start on our meager canned food storage. My mistake was procrastinating about buying up propane for storage. I'm currently using an egg shaped grill, and debris wood for cooking and heating. Oh yeah, cash is king. Cards are worthless. Lessons were learned. You need to have power, but it needs to be silence. Thats the reason I built my home solar system. As long the sun is out, I will be ok. But if its over casted or been raining for a few days, I have 3 small Ryobi gas generator to charge the system. I actually have them in a large storage bin with fire retarded/sound absorbing insulation. I also have an attic fan on top with 4" intake ports all around the bottom. when all three generators are running and the attic fan is on, all you only hear is a low humming. you don't hear anything from a few feet away. But I also have a whole house gas generator, with an 100A charger. That is only for if I have to, and the Ryobi's are not working. We prep to be ready for situations just like this. I just had a conversation with my pastor last night. This was a dry run. I’m outside of Clemson and we got throttled. Duke Energy told us they expect the power to be reconnected this coming Friday by midnight. I’m not holding my breath as I’ve not seen a Duke Energy truck or a clean up crew to remove the trees off of power lines. We have no power or water currently as a culvert washed out and took out the water main. The main was repaired and water was working for a day and then the utility company told us to conserve what we have because we may run out of clean water. The pump station is offline with no timeframe to get back up. This has been a good trial run for what may come. We have a generator so everything is running outside of the A/C system. We have a water purification system and several 6 gallon Jerry Cans specifically for water storage. There are several areas that we have seen that we need to bring up to speed. Our house was undamaged just no power and now no water. My wife and 2 kids are healthy and happy so we plan to address the shortfalls and move forward.

We were without power for a week due to a freak October snow storm that brought down power lines with so many snapped trees. We were able to limp along with a fireplace and camping equipment fueled by partially used 1 pound propane tanks. And our area was lucky to have so much help from surrounding states, such as trucking in generators and propane cylinders etc. God bless the linemen that came to help. We packed snow into containers for the refrigerator to keep things cool, and brought hot coffee over to our elderly neighbor as we checked on her each day. I've always had some things for preparedness, but this event really brought home the reality of what can happen. It's so much worse with Helene due to loss of roads and infrastructure. Sending prayers for those in difficult straights. Also, aside from the typical charities, God's Pit Crew and Convoy of Hope are some good options for material support.

My mom, step dad, two brothers, and myself are here in the north west part of Lake City Florida. From local radar, we were about 16 miles from the eye of this storm. We didn't get a lot of rain here but the Suwannee River was overflowing her banks because of storm surge. We did get massive winds around 150 mph gusts. We prayed and prepared for the worst. We were without power for about 4 days in my moms house. But me and my brother have been living off the grid for right at 4 years. We have been preparing for a grid down for a while now and slowly built 4 small solar systems. These served us really well when the hurricane came through Live Oak Florida last year. We offered to charge peoples phone and other items for them, some of our neighbors. This time with Helene was way more powerful but not as much damage here as last year in Live Oak. This time we stocked up on gas and propane,, food and a lot of water. If we had went any longer we would have had to wire up a 240v generator to the well to get more water. Yes we also had bought a 6000watt one just for backup used for 300.00. I thought to myself that we probably over stocked but I didn't expect the storm to be as bad as it was. We were not prepared enough last year and had a hard time with drinkable water so this time we stocked up because of what we went through last year. I know a lot of people didn't expect this storm to reach inland as far as it did, I know I didn't. I prayed for all of you that were and are still going through this mess. I pray that our Father in heaven will help you through this and any future storms. But like he is saying here on his video, be prepared, stock up on things that are essential. Even if you buy more than you need at the time you can always use it later or share with family, friends and neighbors. We are all disabled but managed to stock up which took over a year but we did it, thanks to God alone and because we had not been prepared last year. A lesson learned the hard way. Please be prepared for anything and pray for the best but prepare for the worst. Take care and God bless all of you.

One of the preps my wife and I made. This state department of natural resources sell bare root saplings of trees and bushes. Some are fruit bearing. The minimum order is 25. Two years ago I ordered 25 plum trees, cost including shipping and tax was 37 bucks. This year 25 aronia berry, cost was 43 bucks. Many states do similar. It might be the agriculture or the natural resources department in other states. I planted about half of all these, gave the rest away to neighbors and friends. Next year hazelnuts. It may take five to seven years to get fruit, but this is for the long haul. And if you are wondering, we have a half acre. We also have 1,700 square feet of garden. Gardening is a skill like any other, it takes practice. And as results come months after you do something, it takes years of practice.

When I finally was able to get to the store to buy supplies. I had never in my life, walked into a Walmart with the shelves, bear and empty like everywhere. I was so shocked I couldn’t believe it. So my survival food consisted of junk food because that’s all that was left chips cookies candy bars. Lol. I found the last two loaves of bread but all kinds of junk food. I went all over that store looking for water. Near the register, I found the last six bottles of Dasani. So I bought two bags of ice and home with my cookies chips and candy bars. Lol. At least got to the store right before right before the hurricane hit I mean right before. Luckily, I’ve been saving empty gallon jugs because I was gonna do this gardening thing Well I broke out every empty bottle I had and filled up with water from the sink and put them in the deep freeze. The Year after Texas had its Ice Storm, Astoria Oregon got hit with a similar storm. Our power was out for only 4 Days, but trees and Power Lines were down EVERYWHERE! One lady in my Church was completely cutoff. I was able to get within 1/2 Mile of her house, but the Ice & Debris were, in my opinion, too dangerous for me to hoof the last 2000 feet. She was okay in the end, but since then, I have beefed up HER emergency Preps. At OUR House, my wife and I have Solar Backup for lighting and Comms (We're Both licensed Hams), a TON of Canned foods put back, TWO Butane Camp Stoves, and an Off-Grid Kerosene Heater. The Water Utility still worked, but I did not trust the city Water at that time time, so we worked off the emergency storage. Less than 10% of our food on hand requires refrigeration-This is ON PURPOSE! Bathing was also easily handled. We have a Solar Shower. We simply Heated some water on the camp stove, poured into the Bag, and hung it over our home Shower Head. About the ONLY thing we could not do was our Laundry. We wanted for NOTHING because I prepared my household in advance. We needed NOTHING from the Store or the Gas station, as we also keep a 100 Gallon Emergency fuel reserve We were TOTALLY SAFE, WARM, AND FED during that event, and had resources left over when services were restored!

Here in Upstate South Carolina we got hit hard as well. Over 3 days without power. All refrigerated and frozen foods gone. Ice was sold out everywhere instantly. Propane was sold out everywhere instantly. All sold with cash, there was no power and no generators. Gas stations were inoperable for 2 days until generators came online. Thankfully, we had propane stocked for cooking what we could of the refrigerated food the first day. The second and third days tested our stored dry food between 4 adults and 4 children. Showers were cold but felt good after ‘warming up’ from all the manual labor outside cleaning up fallen trees and debris. Nights were manageable with the windows open to the screens. Daytime got a little warmer but 80F was still mamageable thanks to my Jackery power bank (1534W) powering our fans. I used 400W solar panels to charge the jackery and a propane generator to charge it when there were too many clouds and solar input dipped to 100w input or less. Bugs came out of the woodwork including fire ants everywhere. One tire constantly loses pressure on my diesel truck and I was unprepared because I burned out 2 small electric tire pumps (couldnt use the larger more energy instensive pump) trying to pump my 35” tire from 28psi to 55 psi (never got beyond 30psi). There was not any crazy looting or etc. going on thankfully. But I will be far more prepared next time. Lessons learned the hard way is knowledge gained for harder times.

On 10/10/2018, we in the Panhandle of Florida experienced a Category 5 hurricane called Michael. I live in a more rural area and we lost electricity for THIRTY DAYS! We had the National Guard giving out ice and MREs which we were greatful for. We have always had plenty of extra food. You have to have canned meat, canned vegetables, canned fruits, we have a gas generator, but could not run it 24/7 because as it was, we were paying about $500.00 per week in gas for partial electricity. Wouldn't run the AC but we had our refrigerator and freezer going, our well pump, etc. Trust me when I tell you that even in October it is hot here in Florida, so we were pretty hot during the daytime, nights were fine. You have to have propane tanks filled for your gas grills and I happen to have a propane gas stove in my kitchen because we are rural there is no natural gas. People acting stupid after two days is ridiculous, wait until they have to suffer for 30 days like us, or God forbid longer.

Excellent video, Jack. As someone who went through Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where it actually hit vs New Orleans, and veteran of several other hurricanes and tropical storms, you definitely need to be prepared ahead of time. You don't have to buy everything at once. You can start out by keeping a little larger supply of canned food and other long-storage staples. Keep at least a couple of cases of bottled water. Rotate through your stock by eating/drinking them and replenishing. Add other item like a small camp stove, Life Straw or Sawyer filter, etc. as time goes by. A small freezer can save you money on a regular basis by letting you buy meat, etc., when it's on sale, and be ready to stock with extra ice before a storm comes. And watch the news and weather forecast so you can prepare if something threatens your area. We were spared Helene, but I'm already watching for possible tropical weather in the northern Gulf region a week from now. And of course the longshoremen strike, if it happens, will seriously disrupt supply chains for a longer period.
