It all seems eerily familiar. I joined the RAF in 1960 as an apprentice and our drill corporals, like Marsh, were national service. It cannot have been all bad as I joined at age 15 and left at 55, although I did get promoted several times along the way.

My father was in the R A F regiment during his national service he said this show was so real it was his favorite show in the 70s He always said its a pigs life in the r a f regiment and the corporal Jumbo Jenkins they called him that because of his big ears was a real bastard

My father in law did his national service but within a few months he signed on as a regular because he got more pay as a regular, in the end he did 18 years & ended up as a WO1. He loved this show, & only passed away 5 years ago. During my father in law's basic training etc he had a corporal who was a bit like Marsh who used to say things like.. 'A word of warning lads.... there are several nasty bastards on this base... & I'M ALL OF EM'.. One young trainee/airman/national serviceman kept getting his bedmaking wrong & apparently he said to the corporal .. 'But my mum let's me make it that way corporal'. The corporal replied to him..... 'I'm your mummy now son... & these f'ing stripes confirm it!!'.

i love the scenes in these old shows where someone is smoking a cigarette where they shouldn't be, and they shove it into some handy vessel when anyone walks in the door. meanwhile, you can detect the lingering smell of smoke from a cigarette someone lit hours before.

Blacksliding just means skiving and not doing the work you were supposed to do. Working your ticket was improperly doing something to obtain a discharge from the forces e.g. feigning a medical condition.

In the forces you don't have the ability to just phone in sick., you have to see the doctor for anything going to prevent you working. Sometimes people would make up ailments to get out of work.

Why not bring back national service to benefit the young unemployed put some self respect in there life
@npc3po301
@npc3po301 Жыл бұрын
Because at the bottom of it there has to be a firm sense of belonging, that England was ours to protect, when national service was abolished in the early 60s it coincided with a wider coordinated drive to bring down that sense of belonging, TV, media was hellbent on dividing the family and ridding national cohesion which down the generations has us where we are now where so many no longer have that romantic tie to/even resent their homeland, it isn't ours to defend any more it's just a soup of anyones from anywhere, there's no collective purpose to joining up any more
